    If it doesn't bring in cash, it's not important to the US. It's sickening.

      Well, unlike other countries we don't have the welfare systems in place to catch us when we fall, so when we fall, we fall pretty hard. It sucks, and everyone is scrambling to get rich quick and be part of that 1% because being poor is fucking hard in this country, it's getting better though; so maybe we'll see some changes in this mentality soon. :P

      +KyuubiValkyurie rossieronline.usc.edu/u-s-education-versus-the-world-infographic/ United states has the highest spending per student of any other country in the entire world. And the message seems to be "If only we had MORE money"

      +Recalibar Gearz And see where that got you on the international lists in terms of education. It's embarrassing that some third world countries do better than the US on that front. Furthermore, your link fails to mention that the money invested in education is not evenly spread: Most of it is to the benefit of private schools.
      Oh, and while you're at it you also might want to take a look at the shortage of teachers. California is hit the hardest there. This is mainly due to the defunding of public schools because there's a fear that the money will benefit unions that have always been primarily democrat. It's no wonder that it's become harder and harder to unionize these days.

      @N Mil Right! Who in the hell don't need more 💰, have you seen the the prices on vehicles, housing and not to mention food! Teaching is a measurable skill-set. Just like I can't give a plumber more money and all-of-a-sudden his or her skill-set goes through the roof. In the real world.... You show an employer your skill-set, that employer say, dam, where did this guy come from. Then you set your price for your labor. If the employer wants to keep you he will fork over the cash, if not, you go to the next highest bidder.
      The liberal mindset is killing teaching. If certain teachers can't bring students to proper reading levels, and other teachers are masterful at this art. Why arent the teachers with the best consecutive results not the highest paid. They have killed the competitive nature in education...

    I have a bachelor's degree from a reputable state college in Washington state. To become a teacher I have to go back and take at least a year of classes, pass three tests, including math competency (not my endorsement) just to be a high school English teacher. That's five years of school and testing in a subject I will never teach in plus a year of student teaching. This is all required for a starting salary that wont even cover rent of a one bedroom apartment in Seattle.

    Another problem with the testing is the cost. The system rather spends millions of dollars on the testing and the implementation of such , rather than spend the money on hiring better accomplished individuals and and establishing more robust curriculum.
    Why would this happen? It's all about control. Tell the teacher what to teach and how to teach it and you strip them of their creativity, you strip them of their voice, then you can better control them. Being from New York City, the last thing an administration needs or wants is 80,000+ educated people with an active voice.

      YES!! I can't tell you how many students I've tutored in subjects they're having trouble in as a college student and these elementary-high school kids just want you to lead them to the answer. They don't have the ability to read a paragraph and tell you the main subject. It's like teaching crickets when you ask them okay...what's the author trying to say from this paragraph. Nothing. These were AP History students. Can you imagine how frustrating it would be for an AP Honors History teacher to be standing there thinking these kids are supposed to belong in this class but don't have the skillset to be in the class because they simply had good grades and want to go to college. And these teachers are supposed to go easy on these kids? He literally had a student report him for being abusive for asking his students to give him answers to the question and the reason they couldn't was because he wasn't teaching. Like what? Now I have the students as a tutor trying to catch them up. It's the same problem. Like I just want to look at them and say...you all are a bunch of idiots and belong in a regular class.

    The problem with education system is that they tend to forget the human aspect of learning.
    It's not supposed to be all about IQ, memorization, accuracy, analyzation, computation, scoring and ranking.
    Learning is supposed to be experimentation, acceptance of errors, innovation, creativity, interactivity, unraveling potential, knowing oneself's strenghts and weaknesses, passion and interest.
    Most of all "Fun". You'll only have your youth for 19 years before descending into a position with a plethora of responsibilities, why not make it memorable and exciting, right? Not the fuckfest of anxiety and depression they call school nowadays.

      My whole childhood is gone. Not all of it is because of school, but most of it is. They didn't even stop bullying when I was in elementary school. Got beat up every day, and nobody cared or really knew until 5th grade. My teacher had to teach me not to flinch whenever anyone even looked like they would touch me. It was that bad.
      As for the actual education aspect, it's hard to learn when you are disconnected, your schools give no leniency for mental health or family crises, and everyday homework makes you feel like you're useless. But at least I have art, music, writing, and other creative things in my life. Without them, I would have died long ago, emotionally if not literally.

She was in Rumania before getting a job in Southern Germany and before Rumania she was in Swaziland. She has taught in England but she is all about the money. Mind you she would go back to Africa if there had been a job. She was going to Khartoum but fortunately good sense over money prevailed as it is a far too dangerous place. She and her husband and son would have lived in a heavily guarded compound with no freedom to wander around. Nonsense. Students who have an interest outside of, as you say, MES, can follow them in their free time, as I often did as a kid. There were no classes in how to replace a u-joint on a 1972 Triumph Spitfire, so I got a book from the library, and away I went! I would also say that if teachers were better at instructing their charges when they were young, the problem you mention would not exist. My father was studying LATIN for God's sake, in middle school, along with the other more normal subjects, as were all his classmates. Why? Because teachers hadn't yet swallowed the horse manure of teachers' colleges, and instead, teachers were subject matter experts, and could teach their subjects so well that the idea, as is current these days, of teaching incoming college freshmen arithmetic and basic grammar would not exist.

  • @christfollower7315
    @christfollower7315 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Biggest issues in education: 1) Children who are disruptive, who are allowed to be disruptive, instead of being quickly shipped to an alternative school. 2) Unsupportive parents who think their child would never lie or misbehave. Instead, these parents attack the character of the adult in the classroom, the teacher. 3) Liberal "child-centered" recommendations that dumb down the curriculum with a narrow range of learning. Teacher-centered direct instruction works best according to studies, yet education schools and school boards are adopting "child centered" techniques, despite the fact that children don't learn complex academic subjects very well on their own. 4) Social Promotion. It's become a thing of the past in many districts to hold children back before their high school years. These kids keep being promoted, even if they missed a hundred school days and were not willing to do any work. They get to high school and fail because they were never forced to learn, so this problem was compounded year after year, resulting in a nearly impossible feat for the student to pass in high school. 5) Unsupportive administrators who fail to properly discipline students. This results in a chaotic school environment, for without fear of repercussions, students do what they want to do. This is often the result of the principal wanting to gain some notoriety for being the school with the fewest discipline referrals, so they significantly limit any consequences to misbehavior. 6) Students changing over the years from eagerness to learn, to "if it don't contain bells and whistles, it's boring". Technology, from cell phones to computers, has truly ruined education, facilitating the creation of students who are so dependent on the technology that they haven't been forced to think for themselves. Furthermore, technology implementation has caused students to become dependent on it, and they will zone out without it. Problem is, you can't teach deep content in a productive manner using technology. 7) Social studies curricula that highlights foreign cultures and religions over American history and governance, as well as Christianity. 8) Low pay for the amount of work. Very difficult to raise a family on a teacher's salary in many locations.

It is good to learn about other cultures and history of foreign countries so you can better understand what is going on in the world but it is equally important to know how american government works and American history the good and the bad. Bring back civics and stop putting all the emphasis on tests. Tests should not count for 80% of your grade. Homework should count for 50% and testing 50%. You can't teach sitting behind a desk, you have to get up and move. Write stuff on the board, have discussions on the material

  • @YevOnegin

    Money has nothing to do with it. The reason there is a teacher shortage is that everyone qualified has been scared away from the profession by what is taught, and the means we're given to teach. Actual education, ie the teaching of facts, will get you fired. As will discipling or even yelling at students in some cases. Many of us grew up wanting to teach but were put off by ridiculous examples of people being sacked because they said the wrong word, or they typed something supposedly "offensive" to friends in private emails.
    Teachers are treated like shit by students and aren't allowed to do anything about it.
    As a result, the only people willing to take the position are those who don't give a fuck about education.

    Paying the people who have the biggest impact on our future among the lowest public wages? A profession that is also looked down on by the public? A lot of "extra mile" work we don't get paid for? Having to be a role model for like 200 different kids with different needs and personalities, not to mention different ages and maturity levels?
    Do people actually not understand why teachers all over the world needs to be praised and paid properly? I have to get a second job because I can't make ends meet, let alone save up for a house or a future with kids of my own. It's disgusting how little teachers are paid and given respect considering the hours and effort we put in, parents might be tired after a weekend with their own kids, we have FIVE DAYS a week with 20+ kids. And we can't just put on a TV to entertain them- we have to learn them about EVERYTHING.

      Why is the profession looked down upon? Are all American citizens being mean to teachers just for the fun of it, or do they perhaps see every day what their children are NOT learning, and get angry about it?!!? Neither of my girls went to public school, and it shows in a very good way. Some high schools require some incoming freshmen to take "Business Math" which is a euphemism for arithmetic. Good grief, I learned arithmetic in second and third grade, but some public school kids going into high school are unable to do basic arithmetic!!! Who is to blame for this? Yep, public school teachers are to blame. I was lucky enough to have a father who was an engineer, so any problems I had learning ANY math, from arithmetic to calculus, were overcome with my Dad's help. What the kids who didn't have such dads did is anyone's guess.

    A smaller, but important problem is with math, and how it's taught. I think that the reason why so many people hate math or are anxious about math is because of all the bad teaching and the stigma around it. My current math teacher literally told a student "It's OK to be bad at math, some people just get it". One problem is that people spread around math anxiety, maybe it's parents, maybe it's teachers, by telling students that it's OK to stay bad at math, and that it's OK to hate math. Another problem is the fact that we don't really care whether they understand it or not. All we care about is their grades on their tests, so we just make students memorize formulas, facts, even simple ones that can be easily proven. It makes sense to hate something like that, because they don't really learn it, however they are told that that's what math is. A bunch of calculation, a bunch of addition and multiplication. A bunch of polynomials. It's creating the stigma that people who like math are super super smart, or super super boring. Even though, if you taught a kid correctly for 1 year outside of a school, I guarantee that they'll like what you taught them. Math isn't about calculation only, it isn't about memory. My crappy math teacher also told the class that "In math, all you need to do is know the formulas" and it makes me wonder how, the best middle school in the district who calls themselves STEM, can even allow him to be a teacher. If we taught kids art like we taught kids math, then all we'd be doing is making them memorize the color wheel, memorizing the types of brushes, types of art, and spending barely any time actually painting. Sorry if this is a jumbled mess.

    I'm just going to drop some facts here:
    Yes, some teachers do deserve more than what they make. A lot of people in many professions feel they deserve more too. Thing is, teachers make up the biggest government organization in any society. More pay for teachers means more taxes for everyone. Besides, you're a teacher. Teachers are about making their students study. So, didn't you do your studying about a teacher's pay before you became a teacher? If you did, you would of realized that teachers don't get much pay. That's the bottom line. It has to do with that you cannot monitor what teacher deserves more and the fact that more pay for teachers means more taxes for everyone. You're struggle is one that is of society as a whole. What we are teaching the children needs to change. Capitalism my friends. It is too extreme, the way we have it currently.

    What is wrong with public education is that it places an undue emphasis on such idiocies as social studies, instead of history. As part of a junior year in H.S. class, all students were required to make a game to pass the class. I mean an actual game, like Monopoly, etc. The game was to reinforce social stupidities, e.g., women's lib, etc. We SHOULD have been learning history, but instead we "learned' the teacher's pet doctrine of women's lib. Also, teacher's union rules are absurd, e.g., no teacher can be fired for less than murdering every boy or girl in their class. I have a degree in Education, and I've watched teachers who literally could not spell the name of the class they are teaching get promoted. Yep, promoted, not censured, not fired, but promoted. Why? Well, they had enough years in service that the union demanded they not be fired, incompetence notwithstanding. My Foreign Policy (name of the class) teacher in junior year of H.S. could not spell the first name of his class properly!!

    Two things at the moment come to my mind in regards to education in the US. We're inundated these days with conversations over the lack of achievement, or dumbing down, if you will, of today's students. There's even talk about the "lowering of standards." First, am I the only one who remembers the days of the Gentleman C at Harvard for graduation? Yes, at one time you didn't have to be a Fulbright Scholar. Private, elite institutions were places where the "right people" went to meet the "right people" for the most part. Cliffies were seen then hanging around the Harvard School of Business scouting for the "right" mate. Then, too, many who dropped out of these elite schools seem to do well in life in spite of it all: Bill Gates, Ted Turner, one of the Fords at Yale, among many others. Heck, at one time even the auto didact went on to success without an elite degree. Professors at these elites weren't looking so much for a high paying job since most were the scions of the Fortune 400 anyway. And second, reference achievement or lack thereof by minority students (and we know that is politically correct for black students, don't we?), is there any index available showing achievement levels between native born black Americans and those coming in from Africa, say, Nigeria, for starters. Put another way, how are foreign born blacks doing in education compared to locals? It would put some salsa into the debates on lack of achievement among black American students. Anyone?

    The problem is not money, although some is needed. You can give millions to the school and same poor results. The problem is the American culture, education is not viewed as a priority. And the way how parents thinks about how education should be, needs to change. Change their thinking, then we have a solution. Parents don’t hold their kids accountable for anything, not their actions or behavior, not accountable to attain high academic successes. All they care is graduation, despite if their child learned anything. When their child go through stress and being uncomfortable with the material being taught, they challenge the teacher and the school. They tell teachers how to teach, even though the teacher is the one with the degree. No respect for the teacher. It’s more like the parent writes the syllabus for the class and the teacher follows, but it’s suppose to be the teacher in charge running things.

    The problem is the liberal, leftist ideology and indoctrination in the public schools makes teaching miserable. The lack of legitimate discipline and punishment is absurd and insane.
    Principles that throw their teachers under the bus to accommodate a parent is also a huge problem. Overall, the real problems in our school have nothing to do with money. And that is the truth.

  • @mya8121

    I’m a student, and think that teachers should get paid just as much if not more than doctors. Teachers are the foundation of everything. Without them, we wouldn’t have doctors, or lawyers, or anything else. Their job is so hard. People don’t realize that they don’t only work during the day, but they are also up late at night grading papers and tests. They also have the pressure to make sure that every student is ready for all of the pointless standardized tests. They need to be given more credit and more money.
    Also, the time taken away from learning for testing is killing us. If we spend those 6 weeks testing like they mentioned in the video, that’s 6 weeks less of engaged learning. Students are given more homework because of all the wasted time. Yes we do need tests every once in a while to check in on how students are doing, but taking 6 weeks of your life every year to take a test is ridiculous and wasteful.

      @jimgallagher5902 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Sara: I agree that the teachers not paying taxes was probably made up. However, there are any number of people who DREAM OF MAKING $36,000 for the amount of work many teachers do. Where I grew up, teachers did not even work an eight hour day, and if they took work home, it was only because they preferred to do it there than at school, e.g., grading tests. One can't call this "extra" work! As for vacation, no profession that I am aware of gets more holidays and a larger number of days off (Summer Christmas, etc.) than teachers. If teachers complain that they "work" by going to seminars during the Summer, their gripe should be with the idiot government which employs them, and requires them to do this make-work crap.

    • @saramontgomery4781
      @saramontgomery4781 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Gallagher You do realize that teachers don't get paid for summer break, right? They get paychecks in the summer for the work they did during the school year. (It is withheld from their paychecks by the school district, since they don't think teachers know how to budget). Additionally, my state now punishes teachers for taking their contract-guaranteed sick days (it affects their teacher evaluation), which is something that I haven't ever seen happen in other professions. And yes, it's currently part of a lawsuit between the state's pub ed department and the teachers union. I don't know if you personally knew the teachers in the area where you grew up, but if you didn't, I'm not sure how you would know how much or what kind of work they were doing at home.

Teachers abuse the fact when there is a lack of tests. Teachers don't want to be checked up on that's why they don't want testing. They don't want the success or lack there of to affect them. But in an educational world of multiple choice and tests every few months, it's not easy with your hands tied.

  • @typingy1
    @typingy1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The list of things wrong with the USA in general also all connects what's wrong with the education system which has been broken for quite some time now.
    -Nearly 20% of all school aged children are food insecure which means they might not be getting a breakfast or lunch or dinner all the time. How can a kid show up to learn when they're hungry? How can they do their homework at home when the power might be out? When they're living in a car? When they might not get dinner? And yet many states want to cut back on food stamp programs or have parents getting (uselessly I might add) drug tested to try and kick them off the food stamp programs. States are willing to spend 5 million to try and kick people off of a 1 million dollar program that keeps them alive.
    -Teachers aren't being paid enough. Teachers are the people who inspire greatness or failure in future generations. If a kid decides if they love a subject or hate it often completely depends on the teachers they get in those subjects and if teachers are dealing with 40 student classrooms while on food stamps themselves, if teachers are living in their own cars, if teachers are in a classroom worried that they're going to get evicted at the end of the day they're not thinking about their class, they're not being patient and engaging with their kids, one bad day for a teacher can mean an entire life of a student losing their engagement in a subject and if schools can't offer a salary that encourages teachers, and a LOT of teachers to try and apply to these jobs then it creates teacher shortages which force schools to hire sub-par teachers who are willing to work for shitty wages.
    -Governments are deciding what kids should or should not learn instead of the teachers just teaching.
    I could go on but there are too many problems to list.

    The problem in the US is that society doesn't value public workers at all whether it's teachers, police officers, correctional officers, nurses, fire fighters, etc. The public sector doesn''t feed the corporate beast or serve the private industry in any way so they're an afterthought compared to all the people in the business world who only serve themselves. They all have to deal with the general public, which in the US is awful because of how toxic and narcissistic our society is. In the case of teachers (I am one), the biggest challenge now is dealing with a generation of parents who have failed to actually parent their kids. Instead of parenting, they just give their kids devices and make excuses for them. The kids grow up entitled and with an ego because parents have never disciplined or held them accountable. School districts roll over to the parents as well to avoid negative publicity or being sued. Teachers know a school's administration will do very little to hold kids accountable and to keep parents off their backs. It's turned into the path of least resistance which is why we see grade inflation and school turn into a summer camp where we promote them no matter what they do. Many kids are so lazy now they won't even listen to you even if you give them the answers to the test. This is the future folks. What a joke.

    We need to take the government out of education. All schools should be private schools. The money people would pay in taxes toward public schools would be used for the private school of their choice.

    Why can't schools just submit grades instead of standardized test scores? I mean most of the year, students learn in different ways and do different assignments, but then they all have to do the same thing for a little while? How does that prove anything? How does that reflect how they normally learn about things? One thing that always annoyed me about standardized tests was the time limit. Some people in my class would just breeze through the standardized tests and sit around waiting for everyone else to finish, while other people (like me) wouldn't even get to finish some of the tests because they ran out of time. They'd get bad scores, not necessarily because they had trouble understanding what they were being tested on, but because they just had a natural tendency to go slower than their peers.

    "pay us more" about sums up this video right?
    I think teachers are probably underpaid, but I also think many of them are under qualified.
    We probably have one of the worst education systems of even first world country.
    We need to tear the whole system down and rebuild it properly.
    Enrollment is down, graduation is down, students getting jobs based on what they study for is pretty low as well, and we have useless fields of study draining money from people and the schools which absolutely no one is getting a job in.

    We spend more money on education than any other country in the world and yet we have the lowest IQ and highest dropout rate in the world. Instead of just throwing even more money into education we need to reevaluate the way schools are teaching. We need to teach students real skills that they can use later on in life in turn growing the economy as oppose to getting out of school and being on welfare for the rest of their lives. Things like computer sciences, technology, engineering, and industry jobs.

    • @jimgallagher5902
      @jimgallagher5902 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, the IQ portion has NOTHING to do with teachers or schools, but I agree that more money is NOT the solution, and is, instead, part of the problem. We should hire as teachers those who know their subjects, AND how to teach said subjects VERY, VERY well. This is ABSOLUTELY NOT the case with teachers now, nor was it the case when I went to school. Part of the reason is teachers colleges, which teach nonsense masquerading as knowledge. A person with excellent and PROVABLE knowledge in a subject should be able to teach at any school, and be able to do so WITHOUT the worthless Education degree. I say this as someone who wanted to be a teacher, and thus HAD to take the worthless education courses, NONE of which helped me know the subject I taught better, nor how to teach it better. I did become a good teacher, but the College of Education played no part in this success.

    That's the thing that has always bugged me. We don't give priority and special attention to the institution that is part of the backbone of our nation. If we don't have a good foundation for the education, education that builds the basis of our careers, at some point that foundation will break from instability. Wake up people, spend your money where it counts. Our teachers.

    I know how to solve your education system. Allow teachers to be fired. Charter schools where the teachers can be fired are doing amazingly because they get quality control instead of reluctant careerists. This video reads more like an advert for Homeschooling if I'm honest - these people are entrusted with the minds of the next generation?

    # One problem is Government Schools are unsoundly structured (by age as opposed to aptitude).
    # A second problem is Teachers Unions - we need to support good teachers and fire bad teachers.
    # Teaching to the test is primarily a response to government over regulations and rent seeking on the part of professional monopolies (regulatory capture).
    # Good teachers should opt to work in good Charter Schools and other innovative pedagogical

They tried to go against the system and were told they wld b fired if they didn't do what they were told. So they quit. None of them were happy about it.

    If a teacher can live where they teach who will teach the children of that community. It seems that we just accept certain sayings. I'm not alright with the status quo. Teachers teach to make a difference in a child's life and prepare them for tomorrow. Tomorrow is a huge phrase. An architect carries blueprints and makes a decent salary. A teacher carries lesson plans. Tell me what's the difference. You can build a bridge. A teacher can get her students to cross it.

    I think schools need more availability for help at home. For example: online notes, videos, and flashcards. Also, i think that notes should be printed rather than written. Bad notes is bad grades, and it is just wasteful of time. Also, we spend too much time in school. I waste 8 hours a day at school because of bus rides and everything.

    Teachers are teachers not babysitters or mental health counselors. And it's often not the teacher at fault. It's the students at fault which is a parent issue and the schools can't fix poor parenting. Affluent areas and private schools are not having these problems with either students or teachers.

    Teaching is just babysitting. And in inner-city schools, the students often have behavior problems which will stress out teachers who are blamed. It is almost impossible to teach students from low-income areas anything. So some staff cheat on tests to make them look better.

    What's wrong with education in the US is that every teacher can and should be replaced with technology (online educational programs) which is far cheaper and likely more educational, but then that would require women to stay home and raise their children instead of outsourcing their children to other people to do it for them. Basically, K-12 schooling is a babysitting service at this point.

    • @MABlacksmith
      @MABlacksmith 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a student, and someone who wishes to teach in the future, I believe you are absolutely wrong. Education is not babysitting or fact memorization, and it never should have been. It is much more than that, but U.S. politics doesn't like things that can't be easily quantified by some test.
