I wouldn't be worried to paint a messkit, especially if it's a Soviet lookalike. I understand the value of reselling it, and that's a fair point if you're a collector, but I think it does more historical use by giving it the look it would have had when being issued 80 years ago than existing in its scratched up, olive paint. Especially considering there are no reproductions readily available of it, leaving people three options, either use a modern and farb messkit painted right, use an original which is aged more than it would be or use a refurbished original which is correct in both shape and paint. But I definitely respect the choice.
You have a very good attitude to preserving kit as is. I would replace the helmet liner with a quality reproduction, but keep the original liner for reference.
I use original helmets, bayonets, ammo pouches, a metal grenade carrier, and field phones. Anything else stays in camp and doesn't go out into battle. I ruined an original ammo pouch once, didn't treat the leather and it eventual fell apart. Original belt buckles last forever, I alot of repros break. I've never had an original buckle break in 20 years.
It would be easier for me to tell you what’s NOT original on my impression , as far as field gear is concerned. My leather, cartridge belt and bayonet frog is reproduction... everything else ...” Y “ straps , bread bag , mess tin , canteen, bayonet, belt buckle, 6 web blanket straps, gas cape bag , gas mask and can and straps, zeltbahn and helmet is ALL original with only my helmet and canteen cup been repainted, everything else is in mostly good condition. There are several reasons why I do it but the main ones being that it looks awesome and is obviously accurate, secondly I like showing off the “ real deal “ to members of the curious public. There’s just something really cool about handing the real thing to someone to hold and marvel at.
