The Worst Premier League Predictions

  • The Premier League season is over. You probably did know that, but what you didn’t know is that I did my Premier League predictions a long time ago, when I was living in Indianapolis, and I (shockingly) did not get them all right. I am aware that this may smash your perception that I know everything about soccer / football / whatever else you want to call it, but that is a risk I am willing to take, because this is funny.
    It is notoriously difficult to stick the landing on Premier League predictions. Transfers happen, wonderkids emerge, and Man City eventually wins the whole thing, but a lot happens in between. Liverpool had a tremendous season and Manchester United didn’t, but every single team in the Prem had a goal this year, while few are able to actually meet that goal. Not getting relegated would have been a good start Norwich. Let’s see how I did.
    Much Love,
    The Zealand

    The logic behind the Leeds call wasn't terrible, if it hadn't been an absolute bin fire at board level, that team could've kicked on and it was unreasonable to expect Bielsa to turn water into wine with the same players 4 years in a row. Early impressions of the summer are that mistakes are being learned from and Jesse Marsch will benefit from much better recruitment. I don't think we'll pull up trees like we did in the first year but I certainly don't expect another disaster class like this year. You were right about the home atmosphere btw, I got to 12/19 games at ER this season and it's been absolutely rocking all year 👌

    By the way...you have to do this again for next season. I'm going to get mine in early...
    1. Man City - Can only see Haaland improving them (if it doesn't mess up Pep's strikerless tactics)
    2. Liverpool - Everyone stays fit and a bit of investment up top with Mane & Origi leaving, they will challenge, but Haaland will keep City in front.
    3. Chelsea - New owners, apparently are more like Henry at Liverpool and won't spend as freely as Abramovic.
    4. Newcastle - These owners however, will spend freely. I can see a bonkers summer, ala City's first big money-spending summer.
    5. Spurs - Unlikely Kane is going to go now, he's turning 29 pre-season and nobody is going to pay Levy's valuation of £150mil for an injury prone 29 year old.
    6. Arsenal - Arteta is building something, but currently lack the real quality of some other squads in the PL. Young prospects are exciting.
    7. West Ham - Moyes is a solid manager, if he stays and they have a bit of investment on a pretty exciting season then they will be around European spots again.
    8. Man United - Who knows? Could finish 2nd; equally could be 10th. Truly terrible this season, a lot of dead wood needs to go, it'll be interesting to see what ETH does.
    9. Brighton - Potter is always improving, better and more investment in the squad could really see them do something.
    10. Leicester - Really underperformed this season, Vardy has had a lot of injuries and they definitely miss him. He'll be drawing his pension soon so they need to invest.
    11. Aston Villa - Another unknown entity, Gerrard is definitely doing something. The capture of Coutinho is a coup and if the rumours are to be believed; he's trying to get in Luis Suarez.
    12. Crystal Palace - Could easily be higher, Vieira is doing a great job, the only worry is outside of the core they really lack talent. Need to get Eze back fit - he only managed 13 games this season.
    13. Wolves - Never know what to expect from Wolves. On paper an excellent side but never make many ripples. Fabio Silva still looks raw, getting him honed in will really improve them.
    14. Everton - They will definitely improve but I'm struggling to put them higher...injuries massively hindered them last season though.
    15. Brentford - Performed way above everyone's expectations last year. I suspect largely due to Thomas Frank; keep him and they'll be alright again next season.
    16. Leeds - Another side that were absolutely beset by injuries. Now murderball has gone hopefully this will improve. Need way more strength in depth. Need to stop getting players sent off.
    17. Southampton - Drew way too many games last season, a couple of those into wins and they would have been comfortably mid-table.
    18. Fulham - Fulham score, a lot. But my worry is they also lose a lot; 10 games last season, that's a lot for winning the league - the most since Reading 2012. The step up will be too much.
    19. Bournemouth - Dom Solanke has been tried in the PL on a few occasions and can never step up... a worrying sign given he was their leading goal scorer last season.
    20. Nottingham Forest - Since PL formation those that have been promoted via the playoffs survive 43% of the time. Take that as you wish...I love Forest for the nostalgia though.

    Many had Brentford to go straight back down. Maybe I was clouded by my history with them as they were the first team I saw live and have done school projects at Griffin Park, but always said they were better than atleast 4 other teams in the league.
    Even now, many aren't giving them their flowers. They got more points than Watford and Norwich combined and could have finished top 10 with a win on the final day.

      @@lukeduale1403 will depend on who they lose and recruit this summer in my opinion, but I'd still say they're currently a better squad than the three promoted sides.

    To be fair it says so much about United that most of us were putting them in contention to rival Liverpool yet they absolutely crumbled. With the squad they had would you argue that they weren't the biggest underachievers of the season?

    Tottenham were tricky to predict. Add Conte since the very beginning and they might have finished third, stick with Nuno and they'd probably have finished in the second half of the table...

    Wolves had a weird season, they had one of the worst attacks in the league and only scored more goals than the three relegated teams. However, their defense was very solid, and specifically Jose Sa in goal was the best keeper in the league in terms of goals prevented (9.2 prevented over the season), which meant they conceded fewer goals than Arsenal, Man United, West Ham, or Leceister above them in the table.
    Basically they had a relegation attack, but a Europa League level defense because they had the best shot-stopping keeper in the league. Don't think your statement that they could finish below 13th sounds that crazy in that context. Had Sa not had such a good season they would have been lower mid table or possibly even in the relegation battle.

  • @CalebNordgren
    @CalebNordgren 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    In your defense on Wolves, they had TERRIBLE xG numbers and Jose Sa spent an entire year standing on his head.

    I may have mocked your Watford prediction on the original video after we beat Aston Villa. Oops. We were SO bad, possibly our worst Prem campaign ever (yes, even worse than the Boothroyd one).
    I can't even remember what Ashley Fletcher looks like, are you sure that's him in the video?

    Honestly don't think your Spurs prediction was as bad as you say, would have been impossible to predict their Conte hiring and turnaround. They weren't on course for CL before that.

    In the football community you give yourself a point for each position out a team was. (lower score the better)
    Meaning you got 68 Points. not a great score. below 60 is considered decent. Show your score next year

    Pieface = 44
    Stateman Dave = 44
    Miniminter = 46
