Starker is a fantastic musician, cellist and teacher. One of my teachers studied two years with him and she was amazed by him. He he fantastic and is one of best kodaly recordings. :)
This version of Kodaly cello solo sonata must be the best cello performance I´ve heard in my life, and I´ve heard alot of great performance. I can´t stop listening to it! The piece, and Dr.Starker, it´s all phenominal. I can´t express myself how much I love it!
While I don't like solo pieces, it just doesn't seem to matter in this case - it's so great it doesn't need anything to be added on. It's better than Hendrix (or anybody else, for that matter).
I love this piece but it would be interesting to hear a multi-movement solo cello sonata with at a movement in a different key than that defined by the 'C' and 'G' strings (which are tuned to B and F# in this piece). It would be a challenge to play and write but it's entirely possible to pull off spectacularly, especially in a slow movement.
I am a little bit concern about all the comments I have read in this chat room. Everybody is telling their thoughts about thecnic or mastery of playing which is in my humble oppinion irrelevant. Mainly because everybody will understand as goog as their knowledge about the cello how they perform it or understand the proccess of playing. None has said a word about the content of this piece. how come? I invite to everybody in this chatroom to think about i have just said....
Dear Nicolas de la Forge technique is the basis of everything in order to achieve the artistic goals of a Music master Piece Like Kodaly Sonata. may I couldn't express myself properly sorry about that Sir.
Franklin I didn't mean to contradict you - on a year's reflection, your statement is more correct than mine. I wonder if the mind has now become purely operational - a question we discussed in university 40 years ago in a class on Dostoevsky - and 2 years ago an MIT professor wrote a book stating that she was seeing students who had no notion of what is 'living'. They could only see the function. Content did not exist.
+Israel Vainsencher there is hope if we can stop the programing. One day I played some classical pieces to a young woman and she said, 'Oh you listen to the more beautiful music'. I said, 'I'll make you a recording of these pieces.' She said, 'No, I have to listen to what is popular with my friends.'
I know, read it again properly. I made a statement about the control you(pl) have to have in your left hand, then I followed it with "HE makes this look so effortless" not "YOU make this look so effortless."
so it would be in 12/8 in total, I would guess two groups of three eighth notes, like a jig or in 6/8 time and then 4/8 would be like 2/4 time so you go from thinking in 3 to thinking 2 over and over. Two dotted quarter notes and then two quarter notes. Not so bad. The pulse of the eighth note stays the same. When in doubt, count in 1 :-)
This is definitely the hardest piece for cello ever written. "I'm Starker, playing Kodaly is like playing a scale....." GREATNESS
This is the most beautiful thing I've ever fucking heard.
Starker is a fantastic musician, cellist and teacher.

Starker was in a class by himself.

Oh, this is just stunning. Just stunning
Entirely Mystical, Contemplative, Inspiring and Compelling! God Bless Janos Starker, his Emotion Raising Influence Endures!
This man is one of God's gift to humankind! Thankful.

he makes this looks so effortless.. haha

que buena canción
RIP Mr. S
saw that he was counting the tempo during the short pause at around 1: 30... so cool : )
Left hand is just a typewriter. Right hand is the voice.
A cello is not a guitar.
The lack of frets gives the left hand much more possibilities forming individual single tones.
He his playing his Matteo Goffriller (The Star: 1705)

I was curious about the opening of the second movement, isnt the cello retuned??? I could not tell? Specifically Scodatura??
whitbywv This entire sonata is played with the bottom two strings tuned down half a step from C and G to B and F#.
VERY COOL to know. I wished my hands did not jump ship years ago, however, its a masterpiece just to watch

@gop6867 holy crap, you're right o.o
SO, the left hand pizz, is a typewriter???????
Only piece harder i daresay is the crumb cello sonata, but this one sounds better.

Thank you for your suggestion.
Has anyone even seen the sheet music for this movement?! Its unbelievably ridiculous. The time signatures...6+4/8 time...How to count that?
One-and-uh Two-and-uh Three-and Four-and
Heh heh, you just said some.
Pieter Wispelwey plays this the best by far. but Mr. Starker's is still very good
Have you heard Braeden Stanley's? Braeden defnintely does it best.
