    I spent time on these machines...they are great...People complain about recording these days (into protools) and I always say...." the old days" you actually needed patience and skill.

      7.5 ips 1" stereo? Dolby A? Agfa, Ampex or Scotch? FYI, I'd kill for your job. 😁

      Looks like 15 In/S 8-track. I can't imagine recording much of anything at 7.5 In/S except location dialogue for TV.

    Thank you for the informational video.
    I would give a kidney to Decca for the digital version of the master tapes of the third movement of Symphony No.3 (III. Scherzo, the one being played on the video). It's one of my favorite movements of all Beethoven's symphonies. However, I found the change of volume between the strings and flute and the full orchestra at the beginning excessive. The flute is too low and the orchestra too loud. This is true in every version of the Scherzo I have listened to. Notice that the engineer has to considerably lower the volume @11:00 too!
    To fully enjoy this movement, I edited the audio file to make the volume change less noticeable. I did this in Adobe Audition. Obviously, this work is very amateurish. Having the master file would be the way to go. Here's my kidney, Decca. Now hand over the master file!
    Anyway, thanks for the upload. Beethoven is watching us from above and would be proud of his legacy.

      Sorry for the late response, I hope You will read: in this case Decca preserved the real high dynamic range that some classical music has got. It's the correct approch; such music must be listened on speakers like what You see in this video, B&W, Dynaudio, Genelec, etc. Compressing is not a correct practice for such type of music. The strong impact of the volume levels change is wanted by Beethoven. Best regards.

    Plot twist:
    4:36 Everett mentioned slightly earlier that there would be a 1k tone playing, since the level is a bit off, he starts swearing.

    Much as I like to have things coming out of my rear speakers that I've spent so much $$$ on, is this "surround mix" really representative of what a person sitting in the audience would hear?

    • @Aaron-od9ul
      @Aaron-od9ul 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so, I've been to some Final Fantasy concerts, and it's a fairly immersive sound.

    • @stephenbaldassarre2289

      They most likely just put ambience in the surround channels, unless they're going for the conductor's perspective of course.
