Thanks for great videos. I'm a beekeeper in the Blue Mountains Australia. I have been beekeeping for under two years in total. I am learning a lot from you. Most appreciated
I'm amazed how plassard those bees are messing with their hive & how typical that you'd find the Queen on the last frame, man really. Definatly bees you want to keep. Good job on the video.
Your videos are more interesting when you take the time to explain what and why youre going to do what you want to accomplish...thanks for taking the time to help us understand...
Thank you showed me some something I didn't know. All these bee videos I've watched and I never saw a queen cell before you showed me that one in the corner
As I understand it queens that are preparing to swarm slim down a little to be able to fly a little better. This may have been a contributing factor in the escape from the cage.
Yep. Heard that at the SC State meeting last week. It was Dr. Tsuruda or Dr. Rangel who said bees invented diet and exercise for weight loss. The workers lower the amount they feed her and run her around.
Ha! She was on the very last frame you looked at. What patience. I have a question. Do the bees start making a queen cell and then get the queen to lay in it, or do they create it from a 3 day egg? The reason I ask is, if I see an open queen cell does that mean that there was once an egg in it? Or do they sometimes make queen cells and leave them open in the hopes that the queen will lay an egg in there? I have read that there can be superceed cells and swam cells and that they are different things, depending on what the bees are trying to do. I made a split but I think they are still queenless. However there are open queen cells in there now but I can't tell if they ever had a lavea in there. Today I took a capped queen cell from another hive and put it in the new split. Fingers crossed! Thanks.
We caught it in a video before our cut out bees swarmed. I think they were queenless. I wish I had got a video of when they all bolted out of the hive but I did get them afterwards.
1 trick is, pull the honey frames out replace with empty frames. You want em always drawn out comb. Reason will loose your construction bees. that slow a hive down. This slow em down from swarming. Once you pull the queen cells. Can also move some brood frame cells into a weaker hive. The Population about right, a little on the heavy side. WOW THERE all nurse bees. Why there not flying and so DORSAL he he ya GOT HER > IT REALLY NEEDS TO BE SPLITTED
Can you point out where the plans for the nuc from a board are on beesource? I saw the post last year and copied them to paper but then moved. Box with the cut list is buried in the garage. Can't find the post. Isn't that the way it is?
+dfishman76 to make these vids, I know how long it can take!! It's great to have people like yourself to make the time to do these vids and answer questions. Nice 1 👍
+jon alford the videoing is the easy part the editing is the pain. That video was almost and hour long and I cut it down to what is posted. Thank you for watching the videos
Here's my dilemma....found queen cell yesterday and open at bottom so I assume the new queen is out. I found the old queen in upper deep and looked good. Still producing. Should I look for new queen near the queen cell? If I find her, what then? Do I put the new queen frame in another box?THanks
+B's Bees in Bama you can split and and see what happens. If one of the splits starts to fail you can combine the hives again by using the newspaper method
Got a question.. could you have shook the bees off the frames with queen cells on them and put them in another box then put queen excluder on the bottom box sit the box with queen cells back on went back later that evening or next day when bees went up to brood and made your spilt? Would this work if you couldn’t find queen?
It’s best not to shake the frames with queen cells on them. This could kill the queens inside. Yes that would also work. Many different ways to handle this situation
Our show to take a queen to take a queen excluder put on a box then put a box on top of the Queen excluder and shake the bees the queen can't go through
hi my new bees swarmed ..was ok as i got them bake in to another hive ..i checked my brood box theirs still Queen sell on a rack ,, them should i make a split of them or gust leave them to do there thing
+Heather Hood I blocked them off until I got them to new location. They where blocked off just so the bees could not get out until I got them to where I was putting them.
At 8:36 something happens in the Matrix!!!.....................Ever try to do the split, and just candy cage the queen into the new hive to allow her a chance to change modes ? Would it be faster to split it, and listen to see which box gets louder ?
17:25 you talk about the wiggle dance. i for one, don't believe that dance gives them information on where to forage. I have seen many of my bees in the nursery doing it, and those bees are not foragers, they are nurses. To lead the other bees to the nectar supply, I feel that they communicate with a pheromone.
I hope what I was watching has something to do with how much room you have for the amount of bees in the box because I want more honey enough for them and some for me I have a plan I hope it works
When you are moving the frames that are loaded with that many bees do you squish many of them? Edit.. I guess you answered my question later in the video, sorry for asking before not watching the whole video.
i realize its been a few years since you made this post but did you try requeening the hive with a cell from another hive of calm bees? cause seems to me an aggressive hive is no fun. also if they are attacking then you may be going into the hive too often and the bees are always in defense mode also use more smoke to mask the defense pheromone. smoke then even before you crack the hive open at every entrance to calm them down and put them into what i like to call "happy hour" mode. i dont know how much you smoke them but lots of bee keepers often use too little smoke before they go into the hive. if my bees were aggressive id first requeen them and use more smoke. also dont buy your bees from a keeper with aggressive hives. bee keeping is supposed to be a joy not pain. let me know what you ultimately did. id love to know.
Just a question?? I see a lot of videos (not just yours) where the queen gets out of the clip because it’s smashed just enough to open the clip. Can’t you just cut out a small corner of hive of one frame and hold her in the clip with a rubber band? Just asking?
Thanks. I enjoy your videos. I like how to edit. I like the fast forward that you do. I think it keeps people interested longer. Thanks for your knowledge and reply.
great video. finding the queen with that many bees is a job in itself. she's usually on the last frame you pull. what's the latest you would do a split? I've been told the end of july.
+Ricky Hardman depends on where your bees are. If you have a strong hive I don't see why you can go later than that. As long as they have plenty honey and pollen they should be fine.
+dfishman76 Hey Darrell I was wondering I see you do that with no protection...I heard you say how docile they are but have they ever turned on you in a dime?
Bees can go from docile to aggressive sometimes. If you are slamming stuff around, killing bees, and being aggressive with your movements that can make them turn on you. Weather has a big effect on them and what their mood is. If it's cloudy and looks like rain better suit up or leave them alone.
Thanks for great videos. I'm a beekeeper in the Blue Mountains Australia. I have been beekeeping for under two years in total. I am learning a lot from you. Most appreciated

I'm in awe of how calm they all are. Impressive numbers and excellent temperament. You got a really good colony there.
Yes they are really good bees
Good looking strong hive! Always nice to see!
+bear09871 they are strong
Your videos are more interesting when you take the time to explain what and why youre going to do what you want to accomplish...thanks for taking the time to help us understand...
+Chris Nickell you are welcome and thank you
Thank you showed me some something I didn't know. All these bee videos I've watched and I never saw a queen cell before you showed me that one in the corner
great looking hive. i really enjoy your videos
+dadu thank you
You are so good! Calm and knowledgeable. I can NEVER find the queen. I do top bar bee keeping.
+Erica Hockett never had a top bar hive. I have one my brother give me but I have never put anything in it
Best explanation of a split I have ever seen! Thanks!
i realize I'm kind of randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to watch new series online ?
Series on what?
you and dirt rooster best and favorite bee channels!
+McBoots thank you very much. I am friends with him. He is a good guy
Running strong!
+628DirtRooster good bees too
Wow that bunch of bees
Great stuff man! Thanks for sharing your knowledge...It means a lot.
+357lockdown thank you.
Awesome video , thanks for sharing
Thank for watching
I came back to watch in 2023. Where yall been? Haven't seen ya on the TH-cam in a long time. Hope yall are well!
Ya got to get back to making some videos. So far I have caught 2 swarms this spring
I really liked this video, great job
Thank you
You got unlucky on that one haha the queen was on the very damn last frame you checked hahah
As I understand it queens that are preparing to swarm slim down a little to be able to fly a little better. This may have been a contributing factor in the escape from the cage.
+Bob Bruchsaler might be. I have never heard that.
Yep. Heard that at the SC State meeting last week. It was Dr. Tsuruda or Dr. Rangel who said bees invented diet and exercise for weight loss. The workers lower the amount they feed her and run her around.
Splitting my hive tomorrow also cheers

We caught it in a video before our cut out bees swarmed. I think they were queenless. I wish I had got a video of when they all bolted out of the hive but I did get them afterwards.
Great job.....very helpful
+Robert Pryor thank you
Could some of the capped queen cells be used to start a new hive?
Yes you could
When you have a lot of capped Q cells, how many do you leave in the main hive?
Just depends on how many there is of them. The more the better

beesource.com/build-it-yourself/5-frame-nuc-d-coates-version/
I need a couple of those cells.
+Marc My World and some things that interest me. I know right
Pretty good.
thanks for the vids they are helpful ....
+darrin boadway thank you. If you have any questions just let me know I will answer them if I can

+Richard owen not sure without knowing everything about them. I would just leave them alone. You can always add another box if you need to
so with it being so hot will they be OK without water for 1-2 days while you have the enterance blocked?
+Heather Hood I blocked them off until I got them to new location. They where blocked off just so the bees could not get out until I got them to where I was putting them.
Split the hive in atleast 4 Nuc's!!!!
At 8:36 something happens in the Matrix!!!.....................Ever try to do the split, and just candy cage the queen into the new hive to allow her a chance to change modes ? Would it be faster to split it, and listen to see which box gets louder ?
+Smokeydabee Charles Coleman well I wanted to make sure I took her with me. That walk away split and the louder hive does work
17:25 you talk about the wiggle dance. i for one, don't believe that dance gives them information on where to forage. I have seen many of my bees in the nursery doing it, and those bees are not foragers, they are nurses.
To lead the other bees to the nectar supply, I feel that they communicate with a pheromone.
Not sure. I know it’s something they have in nearly all the bee books
I hope what I was watching has something to do with how much room you have for the amount of bees in the box because I want more honey enough for them and some for me I have a plan I hope it works
Smart
Pls what kind of bees are there and what state are you on ?. Those girls are really quiet ! Thanks for sharing.
These are mostly mutts. They are from swarms and cutouts. The main genetic would be Italian if I had to guess.
When you are moving the frames that are loaded with that many bees do you squish many of them? Edit.. I guess you answered my question later in the video, sorry for asking before not watching the whole video.
+r aeronca normally I don't but sometime you can't help but the squish some. That's one of the reasons to take a frame out so you have room
I love a big box of bees ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, look like ya got some good splits out of that box go bro >>>>>>>>
I love the way you talk. I don't know what it is about it. Where you from?
+RDR North Carolina
Those are very docile. I can't get near our hive without a suit. They immediately go after me when I get within 20 feet.
They like my wife better.
+tiporari this hive was open for almost and hour and I got stung one time and thats because I mashed her
i realize its been a few years since you made this post but did you try requeening the hive with a cell from another hive of calm bees? cause seems to me an aggressive hive is no fun. also if they are attacking then you may be going into the hive too often and the bees are always in defense mode also use more smoke to mask the defense pheromone. smoke then even before you crack the hive open at every entrance to calm them down and put them into what i like to call "happy hour" mode. i dont know how much you smoke them but lots of bee keepers often use too little smoke before they go into the hive. if my bees were aggressive id first requeen them and use more smoke. also dont buy your bees from a keeper with aggressive hives. bee keeping is supposed to be a joy not pain. let me know what you ultimately did. id love to know.
Just curious as to why you limited yourself to two art swarms you seemed to have enough resources for another?
Do you ever just cut the drone cells out?
I have not but don’t see why you could not.
pretty impressive bee gear you have on. have you considered wearing nothing at all just for fun?
No thanks on the nothing at all
@@dfishman76 ya i understand...but its not because of the bees, im guessing
Just a question?? I see a lot of videos (not just yours) where the queen gets out of the clip because it’s smashed just enough to open the clip. Can’t you just cut out a small corner of hive of one frame and hold her in the clip with a rubber band? Just asking?
You could. Several ways to do the same thing. This is just how I do it.

Kirk Ives thank you

or the first frame when you aren't looking for her. LOL
+Deborah Horne that's right
here In NC - when is the last YOU will do a split with a healthy hive
+Deborah Horne I would not do one after late August
Shes always on the last frame in the box😂
Like the old saying goes she is in the last place you looked for her
Great vid :)
Time for a new queen clip me finks ;)
+jon alford it was the way I put it in the hive.
+dfishman76 as you know, if there's a way out (or in), they'll find it. You've got a bionic queen there- definitely worth grafting from her!!!
+jon alford oh ya. I got to check on her in the new hive. Weather has been crap past few days so I have not had a chance to see how she is doing
Do you use a stand for your camera?
+Danail Ilev yes
+Danail Ilev yes
bee wisperer
Why don't you Mark your queens

Hey Darrell I was wondering I see you do that with no protection...I heard you say how docile they are but have they ever turned on you in a dime?
