These include the variations that are slotted and not slotted on the rear strap of the gun and those with tangent sights and fixed rear sights. He also shows a very rare variation - a late-war Hi Power with a fixed, iron, rear sight AND is slotted!

Carried an Inglis Hi Power in the army in the sixties. Loved it so much I always wanted to get one when I left. Indestructible, reliable, and accurate.

The idea of having a stock for an automatic pistol seems to have originated with the Broom Handle Mauser of around 1895 or so. The Boers used them quite extensively against the British in South Africa in the second Boer War of 1899 to 1902. There are a couple of them in the Battlefield Museum in Ladismith in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal, where the Boers besieged the Brits for several months.

Stocked pistols have existed about as long as pistols themselves have existed, they predate the c96 by at least a good 200 years

Mauser C96 wasn't the first handgun ever to have a stock added to it, it isn't even the first semiauto pistol. The Borchardt predates it.

This was my issue sidearm in The Australian Army during the eighties, still love them to this day. Our version had the simple peep sight, however Ronnie RAAF had the tangent sight, making their Queen’s Medal Shoot Team almost unbeatable out to fifty meters. Not exactly illegal, but not Cricket.

i had one with the slot for the stock and the tangent sight, the other had iron sights. they were great guns. i worked part time for ADT to respond to break-ins. i either carried one of my Hi-Powers or one of my 1911's.

Excellent video-very informative about an iconic handgun.
As the son of a WWII vet from the ETO, I have to admit that I was unfamiliar with the High Power. In the 1973 Al Pacino movie, “Serpico”, Frank Serpico , Al Pacino’s character, wants a handgun with more firepower and ammo capacity than the J frame Smith and Wesson revolvers that the NYPD detectives were carrying in that time frame. Serpico is finding out about some of the corruption in the NYPD and doesn’t know who to trust.
The handgun that he chooses to carry is the High Power.
A side note about Herstal and Liege, Belgium. Dad’s Division, the 99th, was deployed in what was to become the northern shoulder of the Battle of the Bulge. Since it looked like the war might be over by Christmas, several US generals, Courtney Hodges , Mark Clark among others were coming to the Browning factory to be fitted for Browning Superposed shotguns. They were going about December 18th. Unfortunately for the generals, the Germans had other ideas. I don’t know if they ever got their shotguns.
My Dad was supposed to see a USO show on December 17th, 1944 with Marlene Dietrich in Liege. Since Hitler had a price on Ms. Dietrich’s head, the USO evacuated her back to England. Dad said they didn’t get a show until after the war since they were in combat almost continuously.

I have one of the German P-35 FN High-Power 9mm with fixed sights. I had to do some work on it, because it was pretty much rusty. It works like a well oiled machine and is very accurate. I use for hunting wild boar as a backup weapon.

During the 1970s in the British army (RMP), I came across several Inglis Brownings that were slotted for a stock.

    • @charlesrimmer1246
      @charlesrimmer1246 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Matthew Caughey I have read/seen that information on the internet but I think those guns had Chinese stamping the ones I came across in the Army were stamped in English. Also some years ago the Chinese sold off the HPs that they had in stock and these were advertised as having Chinese stamping, at least those that came up for sale on the UK market did (its been a few years since any pistols were sold in the UK, so my memory might be wrong).

    • @charlesrimmer1246
      @charlesrimmer1246 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Matthew Caughey I can't argue with much of that. The HPs in UK service did not have tangent sights but as you can see from other entries on this page some Commonwealth forces did. HK was a crown colony at the time so if the HPs were there I suspect they were on their way to the Chinese National Forces. Something similar happened with some US SMGs (M42 I think) and the Dutch East Indies.

Although there were several great pistols from the Second World War, I would have to rate the Browning Hi-Power as the best (yes, number 1) handgun of the conflict. By the way, Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre translates as "The National Factory of Weapons of War" into English. Thank you for posting this Tom! Well done! How about a video on the FN 1922?

I know someone who has an "a" series HP, matching numbers, and a matching number magazine. He bought from a man whose father got it in France during the war. It's blood stained (that's why the superstitious man sold it after his father
died ) you can clearly see the finger marks on the frame and slide. There's a blood etched finger print on the
magazine with the worls showing. The left grip was blood stained too. This grip had been reconfigured to improve handling, presumably by whoever left their blood on it. This gun handles beautifully, and is very accurate. I have shot it. The man who owns it carries it regularly to this day. If it could talk...

As an NCO in Germany with the Canadian Forces during the closing years of the Cold War I was issued one of these. I assume it would have been an Inglis license-built firearm. Funny I don't recall what we had as a holster, but do fondly remember the green rope lanyard that came with it. Used to loop around your neck under combat jacket so as not to lose the thing haha. I believe they are only now being replaced with a new sidearm for the CF. A tribute to the quality of the design, but sadly also to the bureaucratic nightmare that is military procurement in Canada.

Great vid, good explainations and also very good pictures & close-ups.
I ask myself though, why did the Nazis continue to produce a high amount of Walther P38 while they could have more or less easily replaced their production for the superior high power ? Its main advantage would be, in my eyes, that it doesn't have a fragile slide prone to cracking. Is it because of a rational decision or because of deals & cronyism (the brother Walther being close to some nazi leaders) ?

The belgian workers of FN sabotaged the weapons they were building for the germans to such an extend that the germans had to bring their own workers (foremen), that resulted in sabbotaged machines. The belgians made quite an effort in that, many things were very clever sabotaged that they brake in the field, but not in testing, for example bad tempering of steel or too little tolerances in some places so that the smallest bit of outside-dirt blocked the mechanism or it only worked with the one kind of testing ammunition they got etc etc They went really creative. Don't know about the high powers in particular, what I read was mainly about machine guns, but this one looks absolutely awesome.

No, JMB DID NOT design the first prototype of what became the FN P35. That was Diedonne Saive; he modified FN's existing Model 1903 to work with the double stack magazine he invented to start with. JMB initially wanted nothing to do with the project and he was back home 8n America at the time.
When the French rejected that initial prototype vand specified it must also have a locking breech design, FN shipped the prototype and Saive's magazine to JMB and asked him to have a go, He sent FN and the French two different designs; both striker fired. One was a blowback design the french had already said they wouldn’t accept and the other had a rotating bolt head sum8lar to the later M16.
The French rejected both as they had Saive's initial prototype. JMB sold the patents for his designs to Winchester and went back to working on the design of his Superposed shotgun, dying less than two years later.
France wandered off to design their new handgun for themselves; Saive spent the next10÷ years working on his design until eventually the Belian military took an interest in the Grande Rendemant version. With changes that they requested, what we now know as the FN P35 went into production.
JMB had about as much to do with designing the Browning High Power as he did with the earlier Baby Browning pistol. It wasn't marketed as the Browning High Power until Browning's son Val started what is now Browning USA and started importing FN pistols, shotguns and rifles (and the rifles at times were made by Sako and now Miroku).
FN knew/knows you could never go wrong attaching JMB's name to guns you wanted to sell to Americans!

I have an 'a' suffix occupation High Power that has no Waffenamts anywhere, but all the other inspection marks (i.e, MR on the trigger guard and barrel). Any idea as to why that is?

I have a Browning hi-power afternoon in my serial number on the silver part is just 526. Underneath that it's 526 again and underneath that above the trigger it's a 526. They're symbols on both sides but no of those W marks or Nazi Flags or Eagles or anything like that.

@@BOB-wx3fq That's right. No question JMB was a genius, but he had about as much to do with the original concept and/or development of the FN P35 as he did with the invention and development of the earlier Baby Browning that FN also attached his name to.
He submitted two concepts after the French rejected Saive's original prototype. Both were striker fired, one a blowback design and the other a rotating bolt. The French rejected those as well.
That was the end of JMB's involvement. He sold the patents for those two designs to Winchester and went back to working on his Superposed shotgun until his death a little less than two years later..

Putting a stock and a flip up leaf sight seems like a rather silly idea for a handgun since the most you could expect from one of these is about 100m. It is pure folly to think you could hit someone at 500m with a handgun. If you can't hit a man sized target with a pistol off hand at 100m you have no business shooting one.

From the Fn group like today Winchester
In reality Winchester did not invent anything he had
Lost his mind, Paul Mauser worked for 3 years
Dear FN, he invented quality weapons
Which explains the work of the prisoners of
