Good evening ! I prefer the Fiesta ST. The Yaris is brilliant and I can't be grateful enough to Toyota for making it (despite the WRC cancellation). But the GR Yaris, being a road derived rally car, 4WD and having very wide tracks and (wide for the segment) tires, has a (much ?) higher grip level one that can only be used in unreasonable speed, plus it seems quite serious on a road, t's a car that requires a racetrack or a private road/land and a high level ok skills to be fully exploited and enjoyed. The Fiesta ST, being what it is, is a road car above all, that's make it more playful/fun and enjoyable for less experienced and skilled drivers. A great way to learn car control and feel old scholl thrills (ajustability/lift off oversteer). And it's more accessible (less powerful, cheaper to run and to buy) which is quite a miracle seeing how the car market is shaping up (everybody is going upmarket, cars are more complex and expensive, ...). In summary, for those who want a 2nd car or track weapon or have nothing more to learn from driving a Fiesta ST, go for the GR Yaris. For those who wants to learn car control or want the funniest daily driver, go for the Fiesta ST. But whatever car you choose, you'll be having a big smile on your face driving and that, is what matters. We must enjoy small hothatchbacks while we still can (it's a dying breed sadly).
They are very different cars really but if you can afford the GR Yaris you buy that all day long. Bang for buck theres nothing better than the ST though
Agree with you except from the looks, the yaris has more aggressive front but from all the other angles the fiesta is better looking. Better car? Fiesta for a daily driver, yaris for a track car. Having said that, if I had 35k+ to spend on a new car that would be the Golf R.
Unfortunately, you can't get a Golf R for that price any more :( This was another car on my 'to purchase' list but they are now priced at £39k. If you add any options at all, it pushes it over £40k and incurs luxury car tax here in the UK.

I've owned Ferrari, Porsche and all sorts of other stuff over the years and the only thing I've wanted in the last couple of years is a GR Yaris or (bizarrely) a Morgan 3 Wheeler. The endless quest for 0-60 times and BHP had left me feeling completely cold. Needing some practicality I bought the GR and it's absolutely brilliant.
@@jamesmcintyre4287 Have you seen a Morgan 3 wheeler? The Yaris has 2 useable seats in the back and a boot and it does lots of MPG. It cost me £210 to insure for the year and next to nothing on road tax. What's impractical about that?

@@jamesmcintyre4287 My daughter is 5 foot 3 ins and had no problem in the back at the weekend. I also have a Land Rover Disco, so if I we all go somewhere, we take that. 'Practicality' does not just refer to interior size. I've lived with all sorts of hopelessly impractical cars over the years and the Yaris is easy to live with and cheap to run. I had to pay a premium to get my hands on one, but that's the way it goes sometimes.
Definitely the Fiesta ST, looks better to me the Yaris might be more powerful but for the extra £10000 is it worth it really, the roads these days are so busy you always catch up to the car in front, the Yaris GR will be best driven on a track not as a daily!
A comparison of a Fiesta ST with a supported 260hp tune puts the Fiesta ST slightly ahead of the GR in the power-to-weight stakes and makes a far better comparison IMO. A Fiesta ST with exhaust, intake, intercooler, EBC Big brake kit tune, and Mountune M260 would be my pick over a GR Yaris for a fun quick street hot hatch.
Nicely produced video as always Jonny, and more balanced than I thought it might be! (New car fever, and all that) Still the Fiesta for me though- in the real, day to day world, I need more than just an expensive, insane driving machine- I want some practicality and more features and a nicer interior, too.
I think we can all guess what your answer will be..! Will be interested to see the video later anyway. Fiesta all day long for me, but the Toyota is interesting as well. Harris is driving one on the next Top Gear.
Your previous ST vids helped persuade me to get a MK8 ST which I adore. Super fun to drive,☺️ and quick for such a small engine, sounds great as well handles like a dream. With that diff .When my PCP is up though so will look at the GR because it’s a logical step up for more thrills 👍
Having just spent the whole day driving a Yaris GR and a PUMA ST back to back on empty but damp mountain B roads in the French and Spanish Pyrenees my verdict is ........... not sure. Sometimes the GR just felt too fast while the PUMA was just sublime as long as it's not too bumpy which the GR deals with better.
I just bought a Fiesta ST Edition. Its a great little car. I like the Yaris for what it is. If you want to go on a track the yaris is the way to go, for everyday use the ST is probably the better choice. What ruins the yaris for me is the 6 month service intervals and the cost of the spare parts, like the breaks. Just the rotors front an rear are 2000€ here in germany... so you are looking at 2,5 - 2,7k for a full service on the brakes... Well thats no for me I guess.
I had it 5/1 to the fiesta , I can't belive you hesitated on the sound of the cars (test 1) the fiesta was the clear winner , also looks wise fiesta in every angle looks nice where the yaris doesn't. I fully agree on tge performance and figures side yaris is on top of that but I cant help seeing that you were way more happy and excited behind the wheel of the fiesta compared to this if you compare tye first few video of the st and first few videos of the yaris.... I sence from the body language that you have committed to this expensive purchase and there's no turning back that your learning to love it everyday
In all honesty, I've been filming the videos during the run in period so only been able to review the 'boring' bits. Ford spent a good chunk of money on cool features you can see (and review) but the Yaris is all about the drive, which I've not been able to film yet!
1. Fiesta ST sounds way better from the outside, no comparison! 2. Seats interior way better in ST 3. Azure blue PE is how the ST should look and in my opinion easily beats the Yaris in looks. 4. 4wd of the Yaris is the only win,win situation, but your paying a premium for that... Like you say it's very subjective to ask which is better as they are totally different price points for one! For the price I paid for my ST it simply can't be beaten for a new hot hatch.

Bit daft giving the Yaris a point for "handling" just because it has more power. Of course it has more power, it costs 8-12k more. Relative to its cost, the ST has more bang for its buck in both performance AND fun.

Not sure 'driving fun' is the right way to put it. You can push an ST closer to its limits on public roads giving you more fun. The Yaris I assume would need a track to get near the limits... Depends on how you see fun. Performance would be a better word for this comparison. More grip from the AWD doesn't necessarily mean more fun...
There isn't much else to compare the GR with to be fair. They're both hot hatches and similarly sized, so seems a fair comparison. Plus, it's my old car vs my new car so only right I compare them ;)
The yaris just doesn't make sense to me financially or practically, although it's the one I'd pick if I money wasn't an issue and I could live with it's short comings. The worrying fact is few years down the line the running and repair costs to the yaris will be quite high compared to the fiesta. Fine if you can justify and afford it but I personally couldn't and wouldn't. All that being said I bought the ST fiesta it's a brilliant affordable all rounder. I'm still jealous though Jonny. Thanks for all your wonderful videos!
I am a MK8 Fiesta ST owner and just had the Revo stage 2 Performance pack fitted. I have to say it just looks a far better value for money in terms of how much more the Yaris costs. It's such a shame ford didn't make a Fiesta RS with all wheel drive and pushing 300 BHP. Then again a Revo stage 2 Package is 262 BHP and costs 'only' £1200. Although they have said no plans to release a stage 3 so maybe as far as it can go (unlike the MK 7). To be honest with the amount the Yaris costs I'd probably go for a 2-3 year old Golf R. It ticks all boxes as in rapid / gadgets / comfort and highly tunable. That said the Yaris is still a beast and looking forward to seeing where you go with it👍

Think the GR is a cracking car, but cost is just too much. Could have a nearly new Golf R or Audi S3 for same money. Each to their own.........whatever you drive, just enjoy it 👍
The Yaris wins for me in every "performance" category, except for the emotions of the motor. Fiesta is better in looks, interior, practically and sound imo. Which makes quite a difference of course is pricing of these cars. You can get the fiesta with Performance Pack for like 8k Pounds les, which is actually quite a lot of money. I think you get better value for money on the fiesta if you're able to have only one car. I guess ST to the i20n will be more comparable
The GR is far better looking, still has a boot and 4 seats so is perfectly practical, although as you eluded too, GR buyers are not "one car owners". I think that the I20n will steal alot of potential Fiesta buyers

@@flaffstar_99 the GR harks back to the good old days where hot hatches stood out from the crowd. Like all homologation cars, it's so much more than a fettled with mainstream car (which the ST is). Remember the Clio V6 and Renault 5 Turbo, there road presence was something else, just as the GR. Calling a Ford Fiesta a good looking car is just plain wrong 🤣
Round 1 - Sound wise I have to go with the quiet GR Yaris. It sounds great in the cabin and I hate pops and bangs. Round 2 - Interior - Hard to say until I sit in them so I'll give them a tie. Round 3 - Exterior looks, GR Yaris, hands down. Round 4 - Handling and from what I've seen it's no contest, GR Yaris. Round 5 - Practical? Neither car is a Minivan and the Yaris wasn't built with that concern one bit so the Fiesta ST gets this round. Round 6. Interior tech - I would rather have less than more as so I'll go with the GR Yaris. A stereo can always be upgrades.

In all honesty I prefer the ST. There is zero question about the power and delivery of that power of the Yaris but for me for £35k the Yaris should be giving a lot more. The interior looks horrendous as well as not having built in Sat Nav when the option on the infotainment system is clearly there? Also the low resolution infotainment and laggy system? Importantly lane keeping system on the Fiesta isn’t turned on by default in my opinion it’s near dangerous for that system to be on by default on normal roads you said yourself in a previous video. No rear parking sensors on the circuit pack 🙄 From your previous videos on the interior etc there’s just too many niggles for me to feel happy down plonking down the the deposit and monthly payment. Of course everyone will want the Yaris because of “powahhhh” My opinion anyway 😃

The interior on a homologation car is utterly irrelevant - Toyota concentrated on all the important bits! Reverse camera to make up for no sensors, but being a small car it's simple to park. Walk into your local dealer to order one and you'd be in for an 18 month wait - seems they are more that a little popular
Excellent video again as always. Fiesta st is better in my opinion at the end of the day ford or Toyota no brainer. Think you should sell it and get the fiesta st in aurora blue and start doing your mods. Then again you cost me money cos I like all the mods u did on the st
I love my ST and i do like the Yaris, the Yaris is a rally car for the road and the ST is only a road car with no 4 wheel drive so in my eyes difficult to compare. I wouldn't rule out buying a Yaris.
Driven a GR Yaris. Very capable but clinical imo and awful driving position. It's not really a traditional hot hatch like the Fiesta though is it. It's a rally rep. Competes with Evos, Impreza etc...As a road car for pure fun It's gotta be an ST!

Why you never mentioned the drivetrain (Yaris AWD vs Fiesta FWD), Engine and power: the all-wheel-drive Yaris produces 261 bhp out of 3-cylinder 1.6L engine vs... I get that feeling you tend to focus more on esthetics rather than technical aspects of these two hot-hatches.
...a "Road Legal Rally Car" with more "factory tunning"! I like both, but Fiesta ST its more complete and a super "Value for Money", more... comercial...The GR Yaris its more exclusive, expensive and a "mini rally car" for the Road!! If Fiesta have a RS Version its be diferent... 😜😁

There aren't really any rivals for the Yaris to compare to in that aspect. You could compare two cars in the same price bracket (Focus RS), but then they are two totally different cars. The normal fiesta and normal Yaris are rivals so it made sense to compare the two cars as they are both similarly sized. Plus, the top end Fiesta is now 28k so the price isn't THAT far apart.

I prefer the looks of the fiesta but the Yaris is the better sports car. But the reason I will probably get the fiesta over the Yaris is that b&o sound system on the fiesta

That 4wh drive is no joke and so is the power of the Yaris. But other than that I just don't like it :(, for me it's not all about how it handles. The looks are awful en so is the interior. But I will admit it must drive more fun with that much power and 4whd, bit jalouse of that I must admit... But I think in the end it is, once again personal opinion. So yeah I'm def keeping my ST. Wouldnt a fwd car be better for a novice? I mean 70% to the rear might overwhelm novices. Also GR might encourage people to drive way beyond their skills level. I definitely think fiesta at is a great beginner car👍🏻

@@Andy-2022 I think you’ve lost it lad, this car is designed from the ground up for performance as it is a homologation special and still managed to come in under the price of a performance German equivalent the interior isn’t as good because the money isn’t spent there it’s spent on the all wheel drive system with adjustable drive bias which many of these German cars lack also on suspension design and the carbon roof

Yep OK i agree with everything but .. the moment you want to overtake on a B road the Torque Steer on the Fiesta is a killer , especially if you have a TSR map and a GPF delete with 260BHP its left/right can send you down a ditch. The GR-Four is a B road over taking car, for that , the ST is out :( They are in different leagues . Yes you can say the Sync 3 is great in the ST and yes its fantastic , but you didnt mention the audio ;) The ST performance comes with the BOSE sound system which has a small sub in the boot and its Fantastic. The Circuit Pack GR-Four is awful and you will need a big upgrade to compare to the ST
The Fiesta is still a FWD Fiesta whatever you spend on it - the more power you add the more it gets exposed! If a quality luxury interior with great stereo sound then neither a GR or Fiesta would be on your list. Personally wish they had stripped even more out of the GR, being even more raw would of been great.

Then you’ll have a £35k fiesta worth about £16k. The Yaris is currently selling for more than list on the used market. So is the fiesta really cheaper? 😉

If you can find a clean MK7 Fiesta that hasn't been too boy-racer'd, you'll be on to a winner. They're fantastic cars.
The GR is an exceptional car but for me I'm team ST all the way 🤙

I can't help but feel the fiesta st would be a better daily? Gotta have a decent radio for starters... Especially while on commutes?

Thanks! Yes, the Yaris won't be for everyone. It really swings the balance in favour of driving fun, but there are compromises made.
GR for me easy but yeah needs a exhaust big time. Love my Red Rocket GR

I had it 5/1 to the fiesta , I can't belive you hesitated on the sound of the cars (test 1) the fiesta was the clear winner , also looks wise fiesta in every angle looks nice where the yaris doesn't.
I fully agree on tge performance and figures side yaris is on top of that but I cant help seeing that you were way more happy and excited behind the wheel of the fiesta compared to this if you compare tye first few video of the st and first few videos of the yaris.... I sence from the body language that you have committed to this expensive purchase and there's no turning back that your learning to love it everyday
In all honesty, I've been filming the videos during the run in period so only been able to review the 'boring' bits. Ford spent a good chunk of money on cool features you can see (and review) but the Yaris is all about the drive, which I've not been able to film yet!
1. Fiesta ST sounds way better from the outside, no comparison!
2. Seats interior way better in ST
3. Azure blue PE is how the ST should look and in my opinion easily beats the Yaris in looks.
4. 4wd of the Yaris is the only win,win situation, but your paying a premium for that...
Like you say it's very subjective to ask which is better as they are totally different price points for one!
For the price I paid for my ST it simply can't be beaten for a new hot hatch.
The GR is superior to the Ford Fiesta in every way. It's just a Ford Fiesta, that really is nothing special!

Considering Jonny who made this video has had both, even agrees the ST has many better points over the Yaris.

Bit daft giving the Yaris a point for "handling" just because it has more power. Of course it has more power, it costs 8-12k more. Relative to its cost, the ST has more bang for its buck in both performance AND fun.
The GR doesn’t handle better because it has more power. It handles better because it’s AWD.

Not sure 'driving fun' is the right way to put it. You can push an ST closer to its limits on public roads giving you more fun. The Yaris I assume would need a track to get near the limits... Depends on how you see fun. Performance would be a better word for this comparison. More grip from the AWD doesn't necessarily mean more fun...
Why would you compare ST with GR, they are completely different car, it’s not fair for the ST.
There isn't much else to compare the GR with to be fair. They're both hot hatches and similarly sized, so seems a fair comparison. Plus, it's my old car vs my new car so only right I compare them ;)

The yaris just doesn't make sense to me financially or practically, although it's the one I'd pick if I money wasn't an issue and I could live with it's short comings. The worrying fact is few years down the line the running and repair costs to the yaris will be quite high compared to the fiesta. Fine if you can justify and afford it but I personally couldn't and wouldn't. All that being said I bought the ST fiesta it's a brilliant affordable all rounder. I'm still jealous though Jonny.

For me the ST all day long..The Yaris looks so ugly & terrible. The ST just has that touch of refinement an class about it
I am a MK8 Fiesta ST owner and just had the Revo stage 2 Performance pack fitted. I have to say it just looks a far better value for money in terms of how much more the Yaris costs.
It's such a shame ford didn't make a Fiesta RS with all wheel drive and pushing 300 BHP. Then again a Revo stage 2 Package is 262 BHP and costs 'only' £1200. Although they have said no plans to release a stage 3 so maybe as far as it can go (unlike the MK 7).
To be honest with the amount the Yaris costs I'd probably go for a 2-3 year old Golf R. It ticks all boxes as in rapid / gadgets / comfort and highly tunable.
That said the Yaris is still a beast and looking forward to seeing where you go with it👍
Stage 2, 3 doesn't matter, gets made a fool of by the Yaris in every way, shape or form.

How spacious is the Yaris? Much Leg room and height inside?
Fine in the front, bit tight in the back due to the low roof line - it's a 2 seater with rear seats for occasional use

The Yaris wins for me in every "performance" category, except for the emotions of the motor. Fiesta is better in looks, interior, practically and sound imo.
Which makes quite a difference of course is pricing of these cars. You can get the fiesta with Performance Pack for like 8k Pounds les, which is actually quite a lot of money.
I think you get better value for money on the fiesta if you're able to have only one car.
I guess ST to the i20n will be more comparable
The ST and I20N are competitors. No GR buyers are considering a Fiesta, and Fiesta buyers are constrained by price do cannot consider the GR
The GR is far better looking, still has a boot and 4 seats so is perfectly practical, although as you eluded too, GR buyers are not "one car owners".
I think that the I20n will steal alot of potential Fiesta buyers

@@flaffstar_99 the GR harks back to the good old days where hot hatches stood out from the crowd. Like all homologation cars, it's so much more than a fettled with mainstream car (which the ST is).
Remember the Clio V6 and Renault 5 Turbo, there road presence was something else, just as the GR.

Round 1 - Sound wise I have to go with the quiet GR Yaris. It sounds great in the cabin and I hate pops and bangs.
Round 2 - Interior - Hard to say until I sit in them so I'll give them a tie.
Round 3 - Exterior looks, GR Yaris, hands down.
Round 4 - Handling and from what I've seen it's no contest, GR Yaris.
Round 5 - Practical? Neither car is a Minivan and the Yaris wasn't built with that concern one bit so the Fiesta ST gets this round. Round 6. Interior tech - I would rather have less than more as so I'll go with the GR Yaris. A stereo can always be upgrades.
Most of the niggles on the Yaris can be corrected in the aftermarket. Once that's done, there will be a clear winner ;)

Think your wrong about the driving fun. Yaris is all about grip, you'll struggle to get it moving around at sane Road speeds unlike the St.
You can get the Yaris moving around under the speed limit. It's a bit of an anomaly in a very dull AWD world.

There is zero question about the power and delivery of that power of the Yaris but for me for £35k the Yaris should be giving a lot more.
The interior looks horrendous as well as not having built in Sat Nav when the option on the infotainment system is clearly there? Also the low resolution infotainment and laggy system?
Importantly lane keeping system on the Fiesta isn’t turned on by default in my opinion it’s near dangerous for that system to be on by default on normal roads you said yourself in a previous video.
No rear parking sensors on the circuit pack 🙄
From your previous videos on the interior etc there’s just too many niggles for me to feel happy down plonking down the the deposit and monthly payment.
Of course everyone will want the Yaris because of “powahhhh”

ST interior is leaps beyond, that infotainment system laggy and the resolution on it is something you’d expect from a Aygo not a £35k Yaris.

The interior on a homologation car is utterly irrelevant - Toyota concentrated on all the important bits!
Reverse camera to make up for no sensors, but being a small car it's simple to park.

I love my ST and i do like the Yaris, the Yaris is a rally car for the road and the ST is only a road car with no 4 wheel drive so in my eyes difficult to compare. I wouldn't rule out buying a Yaris.

Fiesta did well to get it into the video, but there's only really 1 winner.
Driven a GR Yaris. Very capable but clinical imo and awful driving position. It's not really a traditional hot hatch like the Fiesta though is it. It's a rally rep. Competes with Evos, Impreza etc...As a road car for pure fun It's gotta be an ST!

There aren't really any rivals for the Yaris to compare to in that aspect. You could compare two cars in the same price bracket (Focus RS), but then they are two totally different cars. The normal fiesta and normal Yaris are rivals so it made sense to compare the two cars as they are both similarly sized. Plus, the top end Fiesta is now 28k so the price isn't THAT far apart.
@@JBCTR True I guess you are right about there really isn't any other vehicle for comparison at this current time. I was going off Australian prices which is double the cost of a fiesta here. A new GR Yarris is 50k.

That 4wh drive is no joke and so is the power of the Yaris. But other than that I just don't like it :(, for me it's not all about how it handles. The looks are awful en so is the interior. But I will admit it must drive more fun with that much power and 4whd, bit jalouse of that I must admit... But I think in the end it is, once again personal opinion. So yeah I'm def keeping my ST. Still going to follow your vids as always because I just like the way you make them. Shame it's not of a Fiesta but the GR is also very cool. Nice vid!

@@Andy-2022 I think you’ve lost it lad, this car is designed from the ground up for performance as it is a homologation special and still managed to come in under the price of a performance German equivalent the interior isn’t as good because the money isn’t spent there it’s spent on the all wheel drive system with adjustable drive bias which many of these German cars lack also on suspension design and the carbon roof

@@paul24w I had the RS '17 and loved it but the GR is much more fun to drive because its lighter. I have the GR since 1st wk of 2021 and absolutely love it. Btw. I also had the Fiesta ST and thats the best FWD car you can get 4 sure.

Yep OK i agree with everything but .. the moment you want to overtake on a B road the Torque Steer on the Fiesta is a killer , especially if you have a TSR map and a GPF delete with 260BHP its left/right can send you down a ditch. The GR-Four is a B road over taking car, for that , the ST is out :( They are in different leagues . Yes you can say the Sync 3 is great in the ST and yes its fantastic , but you didnt mention the audio ;) The ST performance comes with the BOSE sound system which has a small sub in the boot and its Fantastic. The Circuit Pack GR-Four is awful and you will need a big upgrade to compare to the ST
The Fiesta is still a FWD Fiesta whatever you spend on it - the more power you add the more it gets exposed!
If a quality luxury interior with great stereo sound then neither a GR or Fiesta would be on your list.
Personally wish they had stripped even more out of the GR, being even more raw would of been great.

This is clickbait, 1 of 6 of these tests are about driving. And the result the GR Yaris got was, "it's something else." Compared to the front wheel drive Ford Fiesta ST, it certainly is.
