Alexander, I like how you saw a potential bag in the grungy, stained, dirty-looking canvas tarp. Your mind is so open to using old items (or new fabrics) in creative ways to live frugally, yet creatively. I think you not only have a very analytic mind, being able to restore all kinds of vintage sewing machines, but also an extremely creative mind to create useful objects using ordinary materials around you. Making this tote out of a paint spattered tarp is ingenious, fresh, and reflects how people will need to learn to up-cycle old objects to begin a second life for the canvas without further draining the earth’s natural resources. I find you and your mind brilliant. Please keep making these types of videos. I’m especially enjoying the discovery of your sewing to make projects video demonstrations. You are a source of motivation to me. I bet many other people gain motivation to create thanks to your sharing your knowledge and your thought processes.
Love these videos. I like to make with wood, and now steel. I never thought in a million years at almost 50 I would be learning how to sew and LOVING IT. I don’t think people take sewing serious. It’s a great form of expression. You are also just as good creating your videos. Thoroughly enjoying both.
Finally ! I've found another guy that likes to repurpose ugly old stuff and make serviceable equipment out of unpopular materials. This is exactly the kind of work that i do to fulfill my station in life. Thinking out of the box is very difficult for the mere mortal blobs out there. Thank you my friend !
Thanks for the compliment but I am certainly mortal. I will try to make something else that is cool and entertaining. Here is another repurpose type project I made. th-cam.com/video/IDe2YTpHUCc/w-d-xo.html
If I had been able to put that bag together with my ultra-delicate sewing machine I'd have to go lie down for a week after turning it out. Terrific item beautifully made. Respect to you. Thanks for posting.
Cool industrial bag made with cool industrial machines. Sewing the canvas on the post was interesting, it looked like it really helped in attaching the bag together.
I have watched this video 3-4 times. Enjoyable to view excellent craftsmanship! I have been watching Garage Sales and Auctions for some heavy canvas. Still searching... Thanks man!
You’re ingenious, Jason. Another video that is better when watched the second time. You’re the best. BTW, I’d highly suggest or recommend that you and jasonofalltrades do another collaboration or joint video. You two make a great, unique team. The best for men, and women, on TH-cam. I like your less frilly projects and up cycling of older materials, which is much different than so many sewing sites and channels. I really like your totes and bags, not to mention almost everything else you teach and demonstrate. I’m sure you are a mentor to many, me included. A+++....
Yeah ! I belong to a military vehicle preservation club. I have a jeep M-715. We like our OD canvas. I repurpose old OD canvas for tool/equipment bags. It makes me a popular member in spite of my crusty attitude. I like the smell of cosmoline in the morning.
don't know why it's taken me so long to subscribe, but i just did. kinda funny that this video just popped up even tho its 5 yrs old, just cause i was thinking about asking a painter friend if has any old tarps he's looking to get rid so i can make something out of it. thanks for sharing your knowledge, skills, and experience.
Great video!!!Very informative and very well made video! I am jealous of all the machines you have.I just got my juki industrial walking foot machine and am very happy with it.Now I can finally sew some leather garments and even just be able to hem a thick pair of jeans for my customers with confidence. Thanks for all the great videos and I look forward to seeing more of them.
Hi Jeff, sounds like you got a good machine there. It is great when you have a machine that does what you want. I have got plans for lots of videos. Have fun sewing!
Very nice bag, made of cool material! I have an old Dutch army bag laying around for a few months now. Made of very heavy duty canvas. Couldn't decide what to make from it. Now I know! Thanks for the inspiration. Great video.
Wow what a nice project, I only have an Yamata FY5318, Singer 281-1, Phaff 463 and a Tuff Sew Walking Foot with a 9 inch bed. I take the Tuff Sew with me when I have to do repairs on the canvas on my M211 and M923 5 ton. I hope these machines are beefy enough to some of these projects that you do.
wow now you have something to carry... well anything in. That is a very heavy duty bag and nice recycling of an old tarp. It would make a nice tool bag, much better than those bucket bags for those 5 gal buckets.
Found a heavy canvas tent in a dumpster this afternoon and immediately thought of this video. I think my old Singer straight stitcher can handle it. Just wish I knew how to sew/make patterns better!
* * * I love the creation of something new and longer-lasting from something already old and long-lasting... (grin) . . .MOST EXCELLENT. . . ... 𝑼 𝑫𝑼𝑵 𝑮𝑼𝑫 ... * * * Until that time. . .
If that "tarp" could talk it might tell you something of it's life as a U.S. Navy sailor's hammock. They were not issued when I enlisted in December of 1961 but I remember the one my father brought back from WWII. His children got a lot of fun summertime use out of it stretched between a couple of very old sweet cherry trees.
Awesome bag! Newb question, why hammer if already ironed crease? Would using seam double side tape be easier then both? Also what was that tower thing on sewing machine base at 4:00? Thanks *subbed
It is so thick that I had to that. I see folks use the tape, I don't. Both are valid, go with your inclination. That is a post bed sewing machine. They are awesome. Thanks
Nice bag. Put a date on it, so when it's around a hundred years from now, people will say, "man they sure don't make 'em like they used to." Think you can make a parachute bag? They're for nails, screws, bolts. The way I remember them is you set them down, maybe loosen a string and they open up and you can see your fasteners. The ones sold these days are stiff deep bags that have compartments, but don't open up like the ones I remember seeing. (Recently I I bought three different ones, wound up shooting some white Krylon for plastic into the pockets, they didn't turn white, but they got a lot brighter. ) I tried figuring out how parachute bags were made, but I'm only guessing. I couldn't even find a photo of an old one. Like your channel. Like sewing. (I've made some of the ugliest camping gear anybody's ever seen. Works good though.
Hi Alex, I absolutely love the utilitarian look of this bag and it would work well in my workshop. Do you have enough of that tarp left over to make me one? Please let me know. Thanks buddy.
Thanks, I love the utilitarian look too but it goes deeper than looks, it has literal utilitarian function as well. That is a win/win. These old hammocks can't be found at Wal-Mart, what I am saying is that supply is more difficult to acquire and constantly dwindling. Plus, you don't sew this up on a domestic sewing machine. What I am saying is it is possible but it is not cheap. If the money is not a problem for you then DM me on Instagram. You can find a link on my TH-cam channel th-cam.com/users/AlexanderDyervideos
Beautiful work! I would love to replicate this with a canvas laundry bag I have but I think my little kenmore basic sewing machine would not be able to handle it lol
Re-purpose, re-use, re-cycle ! I'm glad i'm not the only one who can appreciate a good "patina". Mere mortals will call it dirty. Those poor narrow minded twits. I love making tool bags made out of #1-30 oz. Canvas, ratchet strap handles and #10 zippers. Cowboy 3200, consew 227, juki ddl 5550. Thanks for the redemption!

Realy nice! I made something similar with an old hand roped cotton sail when I first got my Juki 1541. Just loved it. This is even better, thank you!
I love that you used some old hand roped cotton sail to create something new. the 1541 is a great machine for that. Thanks for sharing.

Post bed machines are very handy to have. I couldn't have done this stiff of material on a flat bed.

Muy buen tutorial. Excelente aprovechamiento del material. Saludos. Y que buen organizador multiusos. Bien. Feliz Navidad.

You are very talented and love the industrial machines
That turned out awesome. Great reuse of an old heavy tarp. Thanks for making this video.
Thanks, I broke a couple of needles on this one until I figured how best to work with the fabric rather than against it.
Learning so much from your videos. I have similar canvas that been looking for idea. Definitely going to try this bag. Thank you for the video

I just recently found your channel, wow some really great projects here! Thanks
Glad you are here. Thanks
Love that bag! Great project and very nice video work.

Alexander Dyer 😁😁😁😁😁😂😂😁😂
Now that's what I call a bag! You made me laugh when you were hammering away at the seams. Can't wait to see your next tutorial. Have a nice week.
Ha Ha, Yes, That is definitely some double tough material. Thanks Linda Mendoza.
Beautiful work! I would love to replicate this with a canvas laundry bag I have but I think my little kenmore basic sewing machine would not be able to handle it lol
Now that is one heavy duty bag!
That is how I like it. 😊
Awesome! Thank you so much for sharing. Looking forward to making some. 😊
😃
Nice work! Hm, I have an old welding blanket around here somewhere ....
That sounds cool. Thanks
As long as it’s not an asbestos fire blanket. I had one behind my truck seat for years until a safety guy at a job told me what it was made of.
Great video . and nice work
Nice bag. Thanks for posting this video

Probably a dumb question, but could I use the 389rb-2 as a single needle machine?
It can work like that, yes
It's a thing of beauty.
Very nice. Great job
Thank you. Thank you
May I suggest getting a 5 foot rule.
I think you just did.
Looks like 20 oz material . Well done Sir , thanks
Very cool!
Coolest bag ever!
I liked it too. I'm thinking of making a bucket bag with what is left.
