Hey everyone! 👋 I’m Rick, a psychiatric nurse practitioner student, giving you an inside look at my journey through NP school clinicals. 🩺
🚗 It's 6 AM, and I'm on my way to my clinical site, an hour away. I do two days a week there, plus some telehealth sessions. This is my second semester of clinical rotations, and I wanted to share how things are going. 📅
In this video, I’ll talk about:
How my responsibilities have evolved 🏥
Day-to-day activities and patient interactions 💬
My preparation process for seeing patients 📝
How my preceptor and I work together for optimal patient care 🤝

Congrats on your 5 month mark!! I’m starting my first rotation next week. Thanks for sharing your clinical experience.
Thanks for the comment and congrats on starting clinical. Try to keep your clinical experience in a practice perspective, not academic. I am always thinking how I am going to apply any given experience or new information as a practicing NP, not as a student who might need the info on a test. Let us know how it goes!!
Thank you for this. I am about a semester away from starting my clinical rotations. Feeling overwhelmed and stressed about finding a job as a new pmhnp. Just trying to stay motivated while still having to work full time!
It is tough to work full time and go to PMHNP school. That is one of the reasons I cut back to PRN and only one shift per week during the semester. I realize, however, that not everyone can do this. Still, many, many people make it though NP school with demanding jobs and family obligations. You can do it! You’ll just be so much stronger when you finish!!
Hi Rick! Thank you so so much for all these videos and updates. I am a new subscriber and appreciate these updates. I am hoping to start this fall. How do you like this program (classes and professors doable and they work with you?). I am a 40 year old woman working 3 12s? Is Wilkes university still a good choice. There are so many PMHNP programs
Welcome to the channel and thank you for taking the time to comment and subscribe. My program has been incredibly supportive throughout and I feel very confident to enter practice! I don’t think your age is any issue, but working the 3 12’s will certainly make it tougher. If you can, I’d recommend cutting back on the shifts or see if you can find something remote you can do. Plenty of people work full time in NP school, so it can be done. For me, I needed to cut back. I am not familiar with the Wilkes program, so I can’t comment. I did do a video about traditional vs. online programs and why I chose the program I did. You might find that that helpful. Please reach out with any questions!!
I just found your channel and I am loving it. I will be starting this fall. About how many hours a week do you spend on studying? I am trying to get an idea of how much time I will need to dedicate to just studying? Any insight you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for watching and commenting! And… congrats on starting NP school. The amount of study time really depends on the class. I would plan on at least 2 to 4 hours a day for reading, studying, practice questions, and writing your papers. I have always used Picmonic (www.picmonic.us) as my go to supplemental study tool. It has saved me study time and increased my retention. Let me know how it goes. Please consider subscribing to the channel and also joining our community of fellow NP students.
Are your clinical hours based on patient contact, or the hours you spent at the clinical site
Great question… the short answer is … both! Each semester I have to get a certain number of clinical HOURS and a specific number of patient ENCOUNTERS. The patient encounters are further divided into pediatric, adult, and geriatric with a specific number of encounters for each to complete my program. I did a video a few months ago about how this is all broken down. You might want to check that out. Let me know if you have any other questions.
