- Principal Dancers of The Royal Ballet Yasmine Naghdi and Ryoichi Hirano and Royal Ballet School students Maddison Pritchard and Denilson Almeida rehearse the second movement pas de deux with coaches Alfreda Thorogood and Gary Avis, accompanied by pianist Kate Shipway. This rehearsal of Kenneth MacMillan's ballet Concerto was part of #WorldBalletDay 2019. Concerto marked the start of a new phase in Kenneth MacMillan’s career. He had recently become director of Berlin’s Deutsche Oper Ballet, and was keen to redefine the company and showcase its full range. He selected a score of youthful vivacity - Dmitry Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto no.2 in F, which was created to mark the 19th birthday of the composer’s son. Concerto was greeted with a standing ovation on its premiere in 1966 and MacMillan received immediate performance requests from ballet companies worldwide.
MacMillan’s choreography complements the precision and invention of Shostakovich’s score perfectly. In the energetic first movement, the corps de ballet marches en pointe in unison, in response to a military flourish in the music. A slow, sensuous Andante follows, featuring a pas de deux that was inspired by seeing Lynn Seymour, MacMillan’s friend and muse, warming up at the barre. The final movement brings the work to a spirited close, with a large corps de ballet dancing with quick, joyous steps. Jürgen Rose’s bright designs confirm the ballet’s warmth and energy.

I remember a teacher once telling me the "floor" can be your best friend or worst enemy. Use it don't be frightened of it Its your springboard and your bed

Every time I watch Yasmine I so impressed by her amplitude of technique and expression. The Royal Ballet really has a jewel in her.
Is it really necessary to have 2 coaches competing at once?
radiant onion In theory, Gary would be coaching Ryo and Alfreda would be coaching Yasmine at the same time - that often happens in pas de deux work. They both have eagle eyes though so will comment if they spot something.

Why shouldn't I express my emotions seeing a mature beautiful dancer?
Right in the beginning, her understudy has beautiful back flexibility
"Just" a student for now...not yet an understudy but yes they are very talented and skilled.
@@Simplenotion These are "just" students! They're top of their class to be allowed such a privilege! I wished the instructors would have corrected them more! Their lift was wobbly and they were a bit behind on the music! But for "just" students, they were fantastic!

One coach would have been enough, both speaking at the same time and continuously is nerve wracking.
Well this happens quite a lot in rehearsals and they are used to it. Plus the Male teacher was correcting the Male dancer. Lol coaches

She is a very good dancer with great technique. Unfortunately, too much effort which makes steps very mechanical.
I prefer Marianela Nunez too.
Love Nela with all I have, but why compare?

Give her time! I always love the journey a new principal develops through their career! Marianela became a finer artist with age... I see this for Yasmine Naghdi.

@@icarrus4u But Nela was always a fine artist, from la fille she was already amazing (ofc she has matured). Also, the concerto recording is from 2010, she was about the same age as Yasmine.
Yasmim yeah, I agree. I remember first noticing Nela in Coppelia as one of Swanhildas friends. She stood out even from a DVD!
