Amrut Rao Katkar on S.D. Burman Dada - Part Two

  • Amrut Rao Katkar, rhythm player in SDB and RDB's team, learned tabla under ace tabla player Maruti Rao Keer. He was one of the sitting members of the team.
    Amrut Rao tells us how Dada used to compose his songs, after which Maruti Rao would get take care of the rhythm. This was followed by assistants Manohari Singh and Basu Chakravorty, who accompanied by the sitting members of the team, would compose the the music approved by Burman Dada.

    Its a marathon effort from your side , sir, to film all these precious gems with all these unherad stories of our beloved ones. Hats off to you. It really shows your love for both the legends and all there assistants or not lesser offcourse. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

      Yes, it has been a marathon effort to get these greats to speak about the glorious past and the golden period of our music. I also saw incorrect information being fed to our younger generation and wanted to set the record straight. I feel my efforts have succeeded when I read comments from knowledgeable fans like you.     Its great feeling to listen these great close persons to SDB talking and dicussing about sdb but frankly its his way of working and effort to make more clear better music made him Bhism pitamah of film music i say so

      You are so right. You should read his autobiography. S. N. Tripathi the music director was the first one to call him Bhisham Pitamah while playing 'Poochho na kaise maine rain bitaaye' song. With your dedication and knowledge on SDB I would like you to be in our SDB group on Facebook.

    U r right sir he deserve this name for his impartial work sir i would like to add that in Meri Surat Teri Ankhen he gave two great songs to rafi acted by Ashok ji and third done by Manna dey to act by both Ashok ji and Kahaiyalal 1 Tere bin soone 2 nache man mora 3 oh God Puchho na kaise maine rein bitayi see his confidence in Rafi his favourite and 2 maana dey also he gave Rafi song in his mind to Talat on demand by Bimal roy Jalte hen jiske liye sir he was way ahead in thought as ge wanted better songs not partial importance to singers another ex is Abhiman he gave kishore two songs 1 meet na mila re 2 Tere mere milan ki ye 3 Teri bindiya re 4 Lute koyi man ka nagar ro Manhar udhaas see his fore sight and just Appritiate

      I do not think the story about Dada taking Talat to sing 'Jalte hain jiske liye' due to demand from Bimal Roy is right. On quite a few occasions he had stood firm with producers and directors and had his way. With Bimal Roy it happened twice - in Sujata and Bandini - with OP Ralhan once, with Guru Dutt twice, with Sahir 1-2 times. with RDB a number of times. Once Dada was convinced he would not listen to anyone.

    in this case pl find u may get answer as Bimal DA thought talat would do better justice I remember SDB told talat mera geet ka tune se insaaf Karna ok

      I do not believe that. After the concerned people are no more, there are false stories spread in their name by biased fans. That's why I have conducted some 50+ recorded interviews to let everyone know the truth. Now I'll tell you why I don't believe about Talat having been taken on the suggestion of Bimal Roy.
      There have been instances where Burman Dada insisted and got his way with Guru Dutt (twice), Bimal Roy (twice) and OP Ralhan (once). There must have been more cases which are not documented. Dada even refused to compose further if they did not listen to him. In case of Bimal Roy he even suggested how a song should be picturised, which was a job of the director, and refused to compose further if his idea was not implemented. When Sahir complained to Guru Dutt on how his lyrics were being handled, Dada asked Guru Dutt as to who was the music director, Sahir or he. In case of OP Ralhan, Dada stopped composing further for a few months till Ralhan requested Vijay Anand who mollified Dada to forgive OP Ralhan.
