Just bought a 2016 XR today, having taken one for a test ride earlier. I previously had an S1000R and that is an amazing bike, but this bike has most of the performance (given its larger size) plus comfort!
Duke, I'm off a 2014 S1000R, mostly due to some electronic glitches that I lost confidence in the dealer (and BMW) to repair. But a wonderful handling bike. If I were to get another BMW, it would be the RR. Like someone mentioned here, you can add heli bars for touring if the egos don't work long distance. But the RR WILL do it all, pretty comfortably. If you don't do track days, then the RR can loose some appeal, but not its wow factor. Just my 2C.
Hey DukeofDC! You're responsible now! I saw your review on Harley Roadglide and I almost traded in my bimmer. Then, I saw your review on XR and couldn't wait any longer... Pulled the trigger last week and got myself an XR. All I can say is I'm in ABSOLUTE RIDER HEAVEN!!! You're spot on on all points of this bike, and I'm having multiple rider orgasms whenever I'm on it! LOL
Oh yeah....I am 54, back into motorcycling again after a hiatus for children, etc and have one of these. JUST UNBELIEVABLE POWEEEEEEEERRRRRRR. I used to think my GSX/R 1000 was a rocket..well...if that was a rocket, this is the STARSHIP Enterprise at Warp 11 (doe it go that fast?) LOL Great, great bike. Highly Recommended.
Fantastic review! This is 100% accurate reflection of what the 2016 S1000XR is like - I think you have captured it perfectly!! .. it does do everything very well. Over the years I've had just about everything, and have to say the XR is right up there at the top of the list of my favourites. I live in Ireland, so wet weather is common, but even in the winter the modes mean that you can ride this bike with confidence. I have owned some bikes that are virtually unrideable in the winter, but this bike is definitely not one of them!
@@DukeOfDC you should! ... we have some super twisties and mega scenery! it's a small country, so no matter where you go, you can be home really quickly! :)
I never wanted a BMW until recently. Now I want an S1000R for everyday, an S1000RR for track days and the S1000XR/GS1200 for those bad weather days when you want more coverage and some heated grips. Can someone loan about $60K? Great review!
I have 1700 miles on the clock and the more I ride the more I fall in love with the XR... it does everything well. the suspension is freakin great... never had active suspension before... soft when it needs to be and firms up well when your in the twisties! The engine is great... the vibrations have almost vanished now.. i did add barend weights but i think after the breakin period it has become less buzzy especially at the mid range on the hwy.
Alan Dampog Great to hear that is awesome my friend. I'm getting a little tired of being leaned over on sport bikes all the time and I'm thinking about upgrading :) I am assuming it handles very well as well.
Alan Dampog i am going tomorrow to the showroom to finally buy a bike. i have 2 good offers on either BMW s1000xr or Ducati Diavel. which one would you pick ?
Does the XR have the auto blipper? And if you're looking for a little more comfort try riding a RR with Heli bars. Plus I would be interested to find out the difference as well.
Great review as always, exuberance and all. Proceed with caution before passing up this bike...would handle any duty with ease and all the power you could want. And would be well suited to 2 up riding. I love their boxer motor so it would be hard to take this bike over a GS, but they are very different beasts. Looks like nice roads to ride, including the well lit oncoming traffic. Always enjoy both your insight and comical commentary...double the fun. Good luck choosing that next adventure machine.
I checked out CR's slide, it looked like a smooth one, as if he been there before. I have a dirt bike background, and I think the preferred way to go, if you have a choice, is the low side.Mo muss, no fuss. But I ready to pull the trigger, have ridden this just once, could you guys address (some) of the many post that may suggest bar buzz, is it in any 'mode', or have you experienced it at all, thanks.
I test rode this and a Multi, this was the more surgical of the two. Multi was more visceral. Dealership had a lightly used 1190 Adventure for 1/2 the cost, which I went with. It's down 10hp, but is still pretty savage. The quick shift and cruise control are two things I wish the 1190 had. Otherwise, I love it, but I can see getting into an XR or Multi when the time comes for a change. The dirt ability of the 1190 isn't a side of it I use much. That being said, it makes me feel like a dirt Rossi when I do go off-road. Love your vids!
Totally agree, this is a surgical, precise instrument lol. I've always been fond of the 1190 though, so bravo man! Need to get out on some KTMs but its a fucking nightmare.
Could you give your impression of the stock windscreen to the aftermarket screen on this bike? Also, which screen is it? Thanks man! This might be my next bike but I'm tall and wind buffeting is an issue for me.
Stock, meh... MRA, hell yes. It was so much better. I would say it's a must have. I think it would definitely help with the buffeting issues you're having.
What about the R1200RS? It's down on power from the S1000XR, but the RS is supposedly really nice as a daily rider. It looks A LOT nicer than this pig, too. Thoughts?
Something that I've been think about recently that you may want to talk about. Owning a Honda, I don't really have to worry about reliability and the service intervals are nice and far apart. Some of the more exotic bikes take alot more money and time to maintain. Just a thought
I've been very interested in the Honda news recently. The new fireblade and 250rr peak my interests greatly. The only issue for me is that no one will let me demo hondas :(
+DukeOfDC honda can be tuff for demos. All of the cheaper bikes are. But my suggestion is just a mention of what it would need to take care of whatever bike your testing out.
Hi boy, let me do some questions. First I wanna tell you i'm watching you from Italy, this is why I'm not so good with my english. Anyway, I just want you to ask where do you attach your camera, how, and how can you record your voice, which microphone are you using? Hope you can help me! I've got a Tuono V4 1000 from 2014, amazing machine! Many Thanks!
Hi!! Camera is on my helmet, and I use a Sony 2-channel lapel mic that feeds into my helmet. I use a GoPro Hero 4 silver. I made a video about my setup about a year ago, search for it and you'll get more answers.
I had the bike for a testride and was really blown away by it! But there is a big but: for lond distance rides the windscreen just doesn't give me enough protection. From about 90mph it wants to rip my head of. The windshield on your testbike in the video is not the original one. What was your opinion about windprotection and that shield. The bike I tested was a 2016 model and didn't have vibrations at all.
I think having ridden a fully stock one vs. this one with the MRA screen, the MRA screen was superior and vastly improved wind protection. If you have any more detailed questions about the bike, I would hit up CubanRider as it was his, and he has basically mastered all known issues with the XR.
Define beginner...There's no such beginner bike; there is no perfect bike; just get what you like. life is short, live it at full throttle and just don't be an ass riding anything.
Nice. The bikes we want to see you driveing it's like r1,r6,600rr,zx6r,hp4 and bikes that give you that uncuttable feeling but they also give you that felling of speed and the loud exhaust.
+Damianos Hilides In all honestly, I don't find superbikes that special. I'd like to see the new R1 though I prefer naked bikes and something that doesn't have an in-line 4. Though I'll watch any of Duke's reviews, they're great quality.

Ducati Drew You are exactly right about rubber gaskets being the solution, and BMW knows it, because they used intricate rubber isolators on the K1200GT & 1300GT bars. Neat design, with a bar inside surrounded by a plastic sleeve with rubber sleeve second at each end, then another metal sleeve surrounding that. You can't even tell they are there unless you disassemble the whole thing. Seeing how it works, you think, "typical BMW over-engineered", but brilliant none the less! Why didn't they use the same system on the XR? Cost can be the only explanation. So now they have everyone crying, "Bar vibrations!" Totally avoidable, with parts they already had tooling for. The GT bar mounts also had built-in 'bar-back' adjustability - genius!
You don’t make much use of the quick shifter. Revving the shit out of the bike in 2nd gear at cruising speed. Wouldn’t let you take my XR to the bottom of my drive
Because of the rack and the wide bars it was a bit odd feeling at slow speed (parking lot) turning. That's what I meant there. No need to break out the caps lock Mr.Fister...
i bought the s1000xr ..... .The s1000xr is equiped with all new Continental optimized braking curve system (first bike to have it).It sucks. The Motorcycle Integrated Brake system receives data from sensors which indicate the speed of both wheels, the roll and pitch rates and lateral acceleration, so the specialized onboard computer can determine the exact position of the bike. With 100 readings and calculations per second, the system knows exactly what’s happening with the bike’s stability factor in each moment and makes the necessary revisions .The result is that the system knows how to modify the brake pressure applied by the driver at the deployment at the beginning of braking, .Thus the differnet brake feeling in diffrent speed lean an angles ......boy s1000xr brake system sucks. PS:I am owner and quick shift also needed re-callibration every 2000 miles with rare use. DONT go for the s1000(X)r except if you want electronics to drive for you
Thanks for the love. We definitely need to meet up again and go on some epic rides.

DONT go for the s1000(X)r except if you want electronics to drive for you
Interesting perspective. I've really enjoyed my time on the s1000xr, but can see your points.
hahahahaha fast with 60 km
it's miles not km/h. So its 96 km/h
TMI
Mate change gear.
lol, never.
You seem more like an S1000RR than an XR, just saying. Check this goo.gl/IFoMKQ and this goo.gl/u0baEm out
Thanks for those links! Yeah, I just want more versatility out of my next bike than the S1000RR offers.
