Braking: There's a brake band around the crownwheel (the primary gear on the windshaft, about 3m in diameter). A weighted beam, controlled from the outer deck, pulls it tight. It needs very careful deployment, as it has a very strong self-servo effect. It works well in one direction only. I worked full time for 7 years as a molenaar.
5.09 is the break.. the milner pulled outside with a rope, and with a system the blocks around the wheel get a bit more space, so the wheel turns free around
