  • The Old English Sheepdog is a large breed of dog that emerged in England from early types of herding dog. The OES, as fans call the breed for short, was historically a drover, helping farmers drive cattle and sheep to the market. Today, this good-natured dog enjoys the comfort of home life and still competes in conformation, obedience, agility, and herding trials.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Old English Sheepdog that you might not know.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Herding Dogs
    Weight: 60 to 100 pounds
Height: From 21 inches tall at the shoulder
    Life Expectancy: 10-12 years
The Old English Sheepdog is a playful, affectionate clown who delights in frolicking with his family and neighborhood children. In fact, adolescence in the OES often extends to about age three, and an adult OES will retain his playful demeanor well into his golden years. An intelligent breed, the OES is a quick learner, always looking for something interesting and fun to do. He's capable of performing numerous tasks, including herding, agility, obedience, and search and rescue. This breed requires significant physical and mental exercise. He doesn't enjoy being left alone for long periods of time and much prefers - in fact, needs - to be in the company of his family.
A properly bred OES is good-natured and kind, and this is what makes him an excellent children's companion and a super family dog. He's sometimes called a nanny, a term of endearment that arises from stories surrounding the role he sometimes takes on within his family. However, the OES is not known for being an assertive watchdog. He may bark when strangers come to his home - or he may not. Some OESs are highly protective, while others aren't.

I grew up with one that I still miss to this day. She lived to be 16 years old before we had to make the horrible choice of putting her down. She was truly suffering by that point. Now at 52 I have an 8 month old male. He is an amazing dog and my shadow. He definitely has separation anxiety. Even when the rest of the family is home he will wait for me to come home by the door.Luckily I work from home so rarely am gone for long periods of time. If I can take him with me - I do. Guess I have separation anxiety too. 😊😊

An old English sheepdog was the first dog I ever owned. That dog was intense when it came to protecting the family. Saved me when I was a kid from a neighbourhood bully who came onto my front yard to beat me up lol it could have broke it’s neck because it was on a leash attached to a pole and when he chased him, he got yanked back. One time, a German Shepard just looked at me wrong and it was on its neck in seconds. I felt bad for the other dog.

I have had the good fortune to have been "owned" by 5 (two or three at a time) over many years and have loved then all. Two OES were raised as pups while 3 were rescued. Each had totally different personifies but shared the traits described in this video. They "crossed the rainbow bridge" btwn the ages of 8 to 15 years old, so having one is a serious commitment.

I do have to say, I did learn something important here.
    Drover.
To me, drover was the first border collie I met. A cattle dog out of eastern Oregon. Fast as anything. Smart as a whip. And when he would sneak off to my dad's place, a lovable layabout who just wanted to be close to people.
I had no idea his name was a trade, and it makes perfect sense. Lad was a 4 time champ in local herding competitions. And when I found out he had been put to stud, his puppies pricetag was a shocker.
    Working dogs are damn useful.
He lived to 13. And had a hell of a life herding cattle all over eastern and central Oregon. And snuck many a strip of bacon and a belly scratch while not on duty.
Salute to all herd dogs. You put the miles on and the hours in. And you're worth every illicit scritches.

I had three OES and none of them drooled and they don't even shed much suprisingly. The beard does turn brown when it comes into contact with their saliva. But thats more due to licking their mouth rather than drooling. In my opinion they are not a breed for beginners or a family with small children. Training can be challenging with a breed that's that stuborn/strong willed and boy they are. Although they can be great with children herding can be an issue with small children and this breed requires time which might not everybody with a small child has. Grooming is a daily thing even in a puppy cut and they need exercise like described in the video. Other than that they are awesome and as the owner of this breed you'll never be alone on the toilet ever again lol

You shouldn’t care how a dog looks, only how it treats you and you treat it

the narrator is wrong, when he said docking is illegal, when the breed standard in the USA still docks tails and it is still okay to do so, as the puppy cannot feel the snipping, as their spinal cord has not developed strong nerves and by the 3rd day a puppy can still be docked. Lots of breeders still recommend docking the tails as many of the breeds have been known to break their tails several times because of the force used when they wag the tails and then hits it against a wall or furniture.

My OES was the best dog ever. We lost her at age 14. She never barked randomly, nor at strangers at the door - it was for specific reasons, and mainly 9 times out of 10, it was directed to our vacuum cleaner. LOL...
When they do bark, it is a deep full chested voice that is bold, yet very pleasant to the ear. Typically it is not repetitive, just an announcement.
Can't say enough how wonderful this breed is - you will hear the adjective "clown" used consistently. They are fun, funny and despite what some might say, exceptionally smart. They love their owners and are very loyal - but are most welcoming to strangers & guests. Guests are new friends to win over, and they win most over in seconds with their warmth and personality.
Friends are friends, but family always comes first.
They love children, are cautious around them, and look after them to make sure they are not getting into trouble or leaving their watchful eye unattended.
Did I say, for me and my family OES are the best breed ever? Just want to make sure I made that point. :)

Not only are they attention seeking and LOVE people and kids & other dogs, but people will stop me several times a day! My boy is mixed with blue heeler, so his dark back never turned grey(he’s almost 2). His hair does matte , and does get an undercoat but his hair is long and only gets super fluffy like a full bred, when he’s washed and blown out. And it’ll last about three days max. Other then me shaving down his bum area he has never been shaved at all. I do trim his bangs because he walks into things if I don’t. He is super funny, super smart, easy to train and loyal! He def has a smal bit of sept anxiety but he’s always with me. As he’s gotten older he doesn’t tear things up as much or if at all anymore, when I leave. My third dog ever and definitely my favorite breed so far. Temperament is amazing and such a lap dog at 62 lbs. Despite what this video says, they can have blue eyes occasionally
