Railway 2 ? Pakistani military runs NLC and PWO, these both are construction company who construct roads, bridges, flyovers, gas station, toll stations, highways. There are awarded 100s of Billions of rupee project. If railways was running and was successful, then they wouldn't make 100 of Billions rupee in construction projects. Lahore and Islamabad metro was also constructed by the same NLC. After construction of the road, the trucks who take the stuff from Karachi to rest of Pakistan, is also part of the same NLC. Railway was intentional allowed to fail, and someone else made big bucks. And yes, CPEC with its 10s of Billions of dollars was also executed by the Same NLC with China.
The best way to use this platform to make us understand our problems and even provide viable solutions. Excellent work Mooro

What Dr Rehman and Uzair have completely ignored is the airport infrastructure that also supports airlines like Emirates, Etihad, Qatar and Singapore Airlines. Emirates isn't the world's biggest long haul airline because of their route coverage alone. Dubai Airport is a major factor in it. The handling capacity of the airport and the technology that goes behind it is absolutely mind-boggling.
The catering kitchen at Dubai is the world's largest, and runs a space-age system of robotic and automated production lines to wash the trolleys, trays,crockery and cutlery. The kitchen facilities they use to prepare the meals are unparalleled in terms of their automation and productivity. You need that to keep providing consistent catering for that volume of flights. PIA will probably have more employees in their kitchens for their fleet of 40 planes than Emirates has for 250+ planes. PIA is probably still paying some politically recommended hire for washing dishes by hand.
The luggage handling system at Dubai, or even a much smaller airport in international terms like Sydney is so far ahead of anything in Pakistan, the mind boggles. The luggage handling system in Pakistan is literally people shunting bags around the airport by hand on trolleys. Even a much smaller airport like Melbourne has a proper underground feed system where checked in bags are transported on plastic tubs to their loading bays with machines guiding them to the correct pathway by reading barcode tags.
Do we even need to talk about the check-in, scanning and lounge facilities? Even if PIA was providing service similar to Singapore Airlines, who would want to go through the experience of checkin in at Karachi or Lahore? Enter Airport, get car checked, enter terminal, get frisked, get luggage scanned, get asked useless questions and asked for bribes, then get hounded by touts for CIP lounge while in line for check-in and then passport control, then get hassled for "Sir smoke karna hai?" touts, in the washroom get asked for tips by cleaners who literally pour soap into your hands without asking. Dubai Duty Free is literally a whole mall in the airport. In Pakistan the duty free is ragtag shops selling itwaar bazaar products and calling them "handicrafts".
And who can forget the legendary treatment by customs? Transit passengers would absolutely love to be standing in immigration queues and watching parchis literally skip lines and be escorted by airport staff. While the rest of the people are first herded into passport queues that have a whole bunch of men in the "women and children only" line, then find out only 2 counters are operational out of the 4 with queues in front. And then get hounded by customs for things like chocolates. That is after literally having to push and shove to get your luggage. Not to mention 2 heavily loaded flights make it literally difficult to breathe in Lahore and Karachi airports.
Do we even need to talk about the state of hotels? There's no proper airport hotels in Pakistan. Melbourne Airport has the Park Royal for example, Bangkok has Louis Tavern and Suvarnabhumi Novotel...transit passengers need accommodation close to the airport for long delays or connections.
The airline is one cog in the wheel of a complex machine of airport infrastructure, airport services, immigration policies, hotel infrastructure, security and safety. All of them need to be there for an airlines success. Dubai Airport, Dubai's hotel industry, their visa policies, safety and security etc all make Emirates what it is.
Same goes for railway...the tracks, stations, the bus networks feeding the trains etc all combine to form a cohesive system.

You can't build airports without demand a s the services of PIA start to improve you will expand your airports you would start investing in providing better facilities no one is saying that PIA will add 200 more routes in one month it would be a process

i am a student of aviation and we studied PK 803 it was that moment when i decided to not do my license in pakistan because not following standard procedures being a pilot gives the idea that other ground checks such as maintenance must be at lower level otherwise the landing gear would open.
Attitude problem is also big issue. Despite several soft reminders for not following proper descent profile, pilots repeatedly assured they could pull if off. Not long before these little things went out of control did they also lose situational awareness.

What will help the railways to earn more revenue?
1) business class cabins
2) advertising at train stations
3) advertising on and in trains
4) advertising on train tickets
5) tenders offered on open market to take ways and restaurants with leases and royalties from profits
6) advertising boards on land owned by railways where highest number of people will see the adverts
7) change in the food and drinks or novelties sold from carts, that are offered to passengers
8) tenders offered to tourists operators to run themed events like the orient express (wedding/birthday/milad packages)
9) introduction of frequent traveller cards with payments collected in advance(helps with cash flow)

thats not how we get lower bills, everywhere they increase competition by allowing more companies to bid for the project, thats how these companies are incentivized to keep the cost lower, no government just hands over city's electricity supply to one single company, it will create monopoly and that way Karachi electric can just do whatever they want, they dont have to invest, just like suzuki who keeps selling Bolan, because people have no other option, they dont have to invest and bring new model, they can just keep increasing the price and keep the product same, they have done this for 40+ years, why would they change?

In case of Pakistan, our geography, especially the population cheapest & sustainable option is a very large train & freight system which connects the country and takes the loud from road network, making goods cheaper & increasing connectivity between cities so people can move quickly easily & lowering carbon pollution while flights systems work as hub to connect smaller hubs to bigger hubs for national & international travel.

The most important factor of the PIA fall is involvement of corruptoon and army establishment behind the scene. Army officers getting 50% discount on flight tickets and political parties appointments on MNA quota destroyed it financial reserves. Singapore Airlines operates with only 6 gernal managers and have 140 plus aircrafts and 11000 employees. PIA have 30 Gernal Managers only 20 plus aircrafts and 11000 plus employees. Poor service, same 30 years old onboard food and canbens. Broken and damaged seats and dirty toilet. I am afraid wherever Pakistan establishment get involved corruption with follow it, bcs they are corrupt.

For the starters, here are some of the "official" facts about PIA, just strong enough for u guys to understand the downfall
1) First airline to introduce in-flight entertainment system. Now PIA has blackout screens.
2) First airline from South-Asia to fly directly to New York. Now PIA is banned to enter USA airspace.
3) First airline to become the launch customer of Boeing 777-200LR. Now PIA has all Boeing 777s that are leased
4) PIA helped launch emirates in '85 with the help of our pilots & aviation staff. Still Emirates uses reference number "EK" which means "emirates through Karachi"
5) First airline from Asia to fly directly to China. Now Chinese airport authorities could easily "seize" the aircraft if dues aren't paid; humiliating the passengers in this situation.
What A downfall 💔💔
1) False PIA's A310-B4s had screens, but PIA wasn't the first airline to spec A310s with those screens.
2) PIA's USA flights had hop-stops in Birmingham and Manchester

4) "EK" does not mean "Emirates Through Karachi", it means Base E Sequence K in the airline numbering system. Originally Emirates looked at EM, but it was already taken by Empire Airlines. And because it is a state-based airline and not the country's flag carrier (UAE's flag carrier is Etihad), they couldn't get the AE code either (which is the 2-letter country code for UAE). The E-based code with the earliest 2nd alphabet was EK.
5) Japan Airlines flew to Beijing before PIA did

but i would say there is no comparison between intercity mass transit and intra city mass transit.
As you compare green line would take days for travelling from city to city.
As pakistan is growing,
There is a hope that we develop transportation systems within a city, like we have upcoming in karachi ( red line, yellow line, blue line , aqua line, karachi circular railway)
At the same time we hope our goverment also focus on inter city transportation system and maintain and improve the pakistan railways infra structure and improve mobility and service.

I believe we need to diverge our resources to various means of public transportation, start by smaller area like modernizing the mass transit system in a city or district and then build up resources for state owned entities like railways and airline. Kudos to you for mentioning Italo. Their success is a benchmark in Europe. Another example is Ouigo in France. Kind of disappointed in the solutions that you proposed. I was hoping for a more detailed conversation on the technical/financial/management aspect of it. At least it gets the conversation started on railways (which in my opinion should be the number one priority for Pakistan along with education and industrialization)

Why was PIA folded into Defence department 1 year after it's creation?
Why were all the routes that were profitable shut down?
Are we only privatizing PIA at dirt cheap rates because we want to sell the properties PIA owns in New York and Paris at dirt cheap rates to private buyers?
Are those asking for privatizing PIA and those looking to purchase PIA in the private sector related?
