Line edits are the worse because they're just so fiddly! Well done!

Line edits stress me out the most, because that's when I can no longer leave things for Future Julia to deal with. I'm Future Julia!

Thanks for sharing your routine for line editing. I have a random question about writing. In the vlog, you mentioned that you're trying to keep your current project to a specific word count. Can you please tell me why you have a word count? I noticed that a lot of writers stick to a specific word count when working on projects. When I was working on creative projects, I just wrote however much I was led to write. The only time I've honestly written with word count in mind was when it came to schoolwork assignments. ( Side note: I haven't published a book yet...but Lord willing, it'll happen in the future).
I've tried researching why word counts are usually implemented....and I mostly see that it's related to the type of book you're writing. For instance, if you're writing a novel, there's a typical word length you have to stick to for that. If you could please clarify about word counts, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank in advance Leah and take care!

Definitely! I also usually write my first drafts with no word count in mind, but in revisions I kept it in the background and now with line edits is when I’m actually trying to hit a specific number. I mostly think of word count in drafting/revisions in terms of keeping the story balanced (like, I don’t want Act1 to be 40k words if my total WC is 90k-that would tell me my beginning is bloated and I don’t get into the action quick enough).
Usually the reason people have certain counts in mind is to meet publishing genre expectations. So for me writing YA Fantasy, a good rule of thumb would be 75-99k give or take. Any less might signal to an agent or editor that my book isn’t fleshed out enough (maybe too little world building or not enough subplots) and any more may signal that I can’t self edit & the story is bloated.
The reason those counts exist has to do with the physical # of pages the book would be printed on, because the more pages the more $$ it costs to produce. Since there’s sort of an upper limit to what buyers are willing to pay for a book, the more printing costs the less profit is available. Which is why big name authors usually don’t have to abide by word count “rules”-they’re gonna sell a ton of copies regardless so the publisher knows they’ll profit. It also has to do with genre expectations-readers expect high fantasy is gonna be longer than a contemporary.
Obv there’s exceptions to every rule & short or long books can be great, but for me as an aspiring trad pub author I want to give my book every shot I can to being picked up. So, I’m aiming to be under 90k which puts me in the acceptable count range. Plus 89,999 psychologically looks like less than 90,000 because of that 8 in front (same idea behind prices being $8.99 vs $9.00).
      Hope that helps!

@@LeahRummel Wow, I wasn't expecting such a thorough answer. Thank you very much for taking time to write this! I appreciate it! Yes, this is very helpful. I'll definitely keep this in mind whenever I get back into writing stories again.
