Wallie, your laugh is infectious. I so appreciate how these videos are the real you. Nothing fake, nothing pretend. Just the real Wallie and your interests, my wife and I love it!
Hey! Used to have family who lived close to downtown New Kensington when I was a kid. This Shop n’ Save was actually a Foodland up until (im guessing) the early-mid 2000s. My grandma would take me shopping there occasionally when I was really young. I dont head down this way as much as I used to, so when exactly the change happened, I couldn’t tell you. Good video as always!
It was the J&J Foodland, and the franchise owner made sure to put the full name on everything. If the cart in the back had the remains of a red plastic handle, I guarantee it read J & J Foodland in the past.
Yessir. At that time, the Shop and Save was down in the Parnassus neighborhood, on a site that used to be a drive-in theater (there's a Dollar Tree there now.) And before that, it was out in Lower Burrell at the Hillcrest Shopping Center...it's a Community Supermarket now.
I enjoy shopping in smaller grocery stores like that old Shop and Save when I can, even when they are more expensive. They have so much more character than a WalMart or other big box stores.
When I was a kid the empty store on the opposite end of the shop and save was Gaylords, a department store. I still remember the new ken downtown from the late '70s through the '80s.
Thank you for sharing the kitties at the end that was different and they were all so cute. I’m so sorry to hear about your kitty. My kitty lost her battle to cancer that was inoperable I miss her every day. Stay safe and see you on the next one.
Thanks again for another awesome video, and you have said it best in previous videos, "the only time you save at Shop N' Save is when you don't shop there" haha. Couldn't agree with you more.
Thank you for the kitty visit, that made my day Thank you for all the wonderful content you put out too, I enjoy watching you and Kayla go on your many awesome adventures CHEERS!!!
Good video! There is a few Shop N Saves around Chambersburg that were former food Lions that are now all gone. The one in Shippensburg, PA is still abandoned, I think. The one in Chambersburg, PA is now a Surplus City. The one in Waynesboro, PA is now spilt between a Goodwill and a Harbor Freight which I filmed before the new tenants moved in.
In the 80s and 90s, the far end of the center also had an optometrist and several government and doctor offices. That Family Dollar was once a Thrift Drug. I have a bunch of memories of the Foodland, including the coffee grinders at the end of the bagging areas. Some guy also tried to abduct me from the entrance at 6:06, around 1988, while his partner distracted my mom. This used to have bollards preventing one from removing carts.
Good video I passed this and remember I used to live in newkensington Pennsylvania my stepmom vickie worked at the newkensington Kmart it was one of my childhood Kmarts, I told you about this shop n save abandoned this used to be a foodland.
I also lived in New Kensington. On the other side way Gaylords and shop n save was foodland for the early years of my life. I only lived a few blocks a way on 4th ave. I used to walk around town by myself at a young age and knew all the stores on 4th and 5th ave. Which are now longer there. Very sad😢😢😢 Thank you Henry
@WallieB26 *Glad you mentioned this, not too many people doing the abandoned and closed brick and mortar channels bring this up. It really hurts the economy, and individuals directly.* People are going to wake up one day and realize how damaging it is to not have a decent selection of B&M stores... after all it makes a lot of difference when you can touch, feel, use, and try items...this is what keeps hard good manufacturers keep their quality at least acceptable. When you buy on line you don't really know what you are actually getting until it arrives in the mail and then you might be unpleasantly surprised, and many online retailers are charging big money to return items now*
If you mean the one on route 30 I have been to that one when I was going to Johnstown pa for a motorcycle show back in July it is a nice one I used to live by greensburg pa.
Kudos to your TH-cam Channel, Wallie! We have a Shop N Save here in Weirton WV. I really loved the footage of the kitties. I'm a cat lover as well. I have a cat, her name is Skeeter, a gray tabby. Skeeter is 2 years old, as of this past year, on August 8th. Have Shop N Savelicious Day!
I miss the little Shop N Save that used to be in Meyersdale Pennsylvania. Sadly they closed after the Food Lion opened up just outside of town near route 219.
At the opposite end of the plaza used to be a mental health treatment provider Family Services of WPA that’s now around the corner in the new Pioneer apartment building, Wesley Family Services
My dad lives pretty close. He probably misses this store. I go to the one in Youngwood, PA, it's newer and 👍 not very big though. I'm probably going tonight as a matter of fact! Thanks as always Wallie ☺️
I'm a New kensington native, and I believe this may of been a Foodland store prior to becoming Shop n' Save. I remember back in 1985, my friend and I stood near the front door to collect donations for my marjorette troop-'Top Hats." I was last at this store in 2012 about. This shopping center used to be booming when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's. I believe it took a huge nosedive in the 90's.
Do you remember the FESTIVAL FOODS chain which used to have a small number of stores in the Pittsburgh suburbs? Also what about JUBILEE FOODS which was related to Festival Foods?
That Giant Eagle in New Ken is ALWAYS busy! I’m sure it was hard to compete with it. I used to go to the Big Kmart in New Ken, then I’d hit Giant Eagle. I didn’t know that Shop & Save was out there. I’ve been to a few Shop & Saves and they tended to be on the dirty side.
There was a JamesWay on Logans Ferry Rd where this old Shop N Save used to be before they moved I believe .. so that cart prolly got brought along with the others
There was never a Jamesway in New Kensington. The Shop N Save was a Foodland years ago. The right side of the plaza had a Clabers store at one time I believe. Kensington House Furniture moved from 5th Avenue to the right side of the plaza when Clabers left. After Kensington House left, Big Lots was there until they relocated to Natrona Heights.
I had a Shop N Save just before you go into the city of DuBois, PA, and I loved it there. I remember one time my brother ran to get milk in the store and when he came back to us, he dropped it and it spilled all over the floor and he cried. It's now a Save A Lot grocery store. Lol at Sho N Save, lol 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. One of my cats had to be put down because she had something in her throat and my mom tried to have her feel better but she got worse after her breathing problem, I miss her a lot 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢.
That's sad that Walmart puts so many small stores out of business. The elderly folks I'm sure relied on places like this and didn't want to have to go to Walmart. Such cute kitties! So sorry to hear about your kitty. I know the feeling, as I lost a cat and then a dog that were my best friends. But they're always here in spirit, pain free!
I know. I closed for the same reason businesses are moving out of a lot of big cities. The amount of shoplifting and other retail theft made it impossible to turn a profit. Plus, a lot of people avoided shopping there in the evenings because the parking lot had become a hangout for certain groups of, um, teens...it got really dicey.
One of the few times I voluntarily went to New Kensington was with my friend to pick up his girlfriend from the bus stop, and to kill time we went into this store and I left shellshocked. I think the rats were doing a better job at keeping it clean than the workers. The fight at one of the registers was cool though.
Nice ending with the kitties. Would you like to take 2 home with you. You can have Kingsford and Yosemite. Take them back to PA when you go home. I'll give you canned food.
Wallie viewed your vid yesterday the owners have another location across the river the reason i'm writing is Frankie's Friends is having funding trouble i will help any way i can great doc!

I was at this EXACT _Shop N Save_ a few years ago; I think sometime around 2015-ish? I'm kinda shocked they closed.
Cool, cute Cats 😀
I live close by the closed shop n save in new Kensington. I live in Creighton. There is a closed Sheetz in Creighton
There's a new convenience store/gas station going in on that corner....I think it's supposed to open either this weekend or next.

I used to go to this shop and save when I was younger. I was pretty disappointed when it got shut down because when I used to go there with my mom.
I live here in New Kensington, next to the original Alcoa Research and Development Headquarters.
Thank you

Hello from Australia.
There is a great Shop & Save by me. I go there whenever I can. I just bought holiday gifts there found nowhere else. Polish chocolates, etc.
We used to have Shop N Saves here in New England back in the 80s and 90s but most of them have been turned into Hannaford.
Cool video 📹 man
Kind of eerie
