The bread and butter of the wizard is their spell selection not their features. We won't truly know until we see what spells they changed and what ones they didn't.
That's definitely true but it does feel like they've barely even touched the wizard😅there is not a single change or tweak between level 5-18 which is kind of crazy if you ask me
There is nothing in between level 2 and level 18 for the base wizard in the 2014 class. They actually gave them a level 5 feature. Minor changes because it is not a new edition, it is a glow up and balance patch (I agree that the asking price is too high). They even maintain that is backwards compatible, which it is to an extent. I think they would have made some different decisions if they were building a completely new edition but 5e is still so popular they didn't want to create that schism. The schism will still be there but to a lesser extent then if they dropped a 6e. Every spell caster is going to get Ritual Casting but they still need to have the spell prepared. The wizard gets to keep their Ritual Casting crown by being able to cast them without needing to prepare them (it will still work the same as does it now; they are just making things clearer).
Yeah it's so disappointing that theyre not actually trying to create a new version. They could've made 5.5e and released some cool new books but nope, they want money
They considered making more drastic changes to the wizard in the UA. From lvl 5 onwards, wizards could take any spell they know and tweak it, making it a new version of the spell only they could cast. Essentially, at the cost of a day or two and a lot of gold, wizards could give spells PERMANENT metamagic effects. Yes, like the sorcerer, but forever. The general response was: "Wow, wow, wow, wow! We are buffing the Wizard?!" And WotC scrapped it.
Them upping the level for subclass choice is nonsense. You would have studied that in school, not out in an adventure. I wanted to pick at level 1. Also there are so many questions like how does using an old subclass work? Conjuration was my favorite they can't just take it away...
Yeah i have the same issue with warlocks. Warlocks should have their patron from level 1 but it's level 3 now which makes no sense whatsoever. I'm pretty sure they'll add the conjuration subclass in a later book like the new tasha's but we'll have to see🙃
STOP playing and buying DnD. Pathfinder 2nd Edition is superior in every single way. Want really cool ass wizards ? Pathfinder 2e ! 3 action economy where you can do anything you want with those 3 actions, Attack three times ? 3 One action spells ? move, then jump a pit, and land by shooting an arrow behind your pursuers? Want to drink 3 potions on your turn? PATHFINDER 2E BABY ! Ditch DnD, it's only a matter of time before they do another open game license and another giant middle finger to their player base Guess what, Pathfinder 2e is also completely and totally free, an open game license and every single sourcebook on the web for you to enjoy PATHFINDER 2e !
Yk i'd actually love to switch to pathfinder because EVERYONE who makes the change from dnd to PF talks about how much better it is, but at the end of the day the friends I play with are more important than the system and theyre not really down to switch

Tbf that sounds very strong. I do think people are scared of their favourite classes is a reason for why wotc arent changing a lot tbf.

Using an old subclass works the exact same way it did before, except that you get the level 2 benefit at level 3 instead.

They did put a lot of care into all the other classes, also the art is fantastic. My favorite ttrpg right now is PF2E though
