I love Bobby's feedback swells. It's one thing that doesn't get talked about often in his playing style. It was always a huge part of his sound in the later years. He's very underrated as an artist sometimes. So tasteful and modest. Always fitting in some swell or tremolo or sustain that fits into his "rhythm and ornamentation" style of guitar playing.I wonder what other rock stars would think about that style. Only in a loose band like the Dead. So cool.
@jamjax - i always wish he were mixed louder... he does incredible stuff you can barely hear, and yeah, total atmospherics master turning the guitar into something else.
He’s the greatest rhythm player to ever do it in my opinion. More inventive and expressive than most lead players but always in a way that served the songs without taking any of the spotlight
I thought Bobby's playing was phenomenal.... even in the early days some of the stuff that he did on Europe 72 was instrumental in in my transformation from a stone Hendrix freak to Grateful Dead fanatic, the interplay of the guitars on Morning Dew and Ramble on Rose will never get old.... and of course that's just a few examples
Utterly chilling. People assume the dead were just a hippy dippy band but this sets them apart- they covered such a range of emotions. No group of their popularity would dare handle a subject as painful and sensitive as suicide, but the dead completely captured it. Just look at Garcia's glance at 1:34. He wears the raw tragedy on his face after delivering the line of someone who's just taken their own life. "No I won't tell you a thing." Terrifying.
My all time favorite song. Who can come up with a line ".....she's only fractured and just a little nervous from the fall" except Garcia and Hunter! Rest in love Jerry!
Thank you, Robert hunter, for these and countless other lyrics that have been the collective soundtrack to the lives of many past, present, and undoubtedly yet to come. In your departure from this earthly plane, know you leave an unparalleled legacy backed by the greatest musicians to ever grace a stage and put into the air by a man whose influence on so many can't be described.
Actually, Jerry flubbed the lyrics and left out “before I hit the ground. All I leave behind me is only what I found” Yeah. Love him forever even with his many dropped lines.
Brent was dead just a month after this show, a tragedy from which the band never fully recovered (especially Jerry). This show literally marks the end of an era for the band.
This captures everything...The Imperfect Perfection of Jerry....Thank You Jerry & God Bless...what you have shared with all of us will travel forever in our Spirits!...Many Souls you have touched deep within and made a difference in our Lives.mw
Haunting, beautiful, brilliant. Quintessential Garcia. Funny how the man who is the poster person for the happy hippy image, was actually more of a deliverer of dark news. So much depth.
I remember leaving our stuff out on the picnic table and we would come back from the show and everything was just where we left it. Once upon a time we could trust the people.

I had a moment just now to watch a vid of D&C perform this tune with OB singing. I should say that I am no purist by any means. I kind of like D&C at times; I find them slow and plodding at others. They do a valiant job at bringing this delicate and profound song to life. OB seems to feel the lyrics, and I love--LOVE--the way he "feels" (at least in the version I watched) THE chord change (you know THAT one--before the best bridge ever!). In the performance I watched, he paused looked up with eyes closed and bathed in the surreal majesty of that moment. I loved the Hammond swells in the early break and Mayer's cascade of notes was reminiscent of Jerry's. But...BUT...then I watched THIS video! Oh man. Jerry the VOCALIST--so plaintive, so emotive, so much PATHOS. And the nearly perfect scattered trickle of notes, with a few bad ones that only give the song that much more drama and realism. And, Bob's sprinkled moody feedback. And, Brent's backup vocals--so, so strong (along with the harpsichord sound!). But then came the moment--the chord change, that break... I flew once again into a literary place like Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily": gothic, frail, haunted--but not as horrific of course. As usual, though, Jerry's voice and the backing vocals threw open the blinds and let hope shimmer in. And, left me teary and happy to have been taken there again... At their best, the GD were poetic with all the meaning that such a word packs: like good literature, they took you someplace else or made you someone else if only for a few moments. Because of this quality, I can enjoy D&C; I can delightfully lose my *&$^# with Phish. But I will always love the Grateful Dead!

If you can abide it
Let the hurdy gurdy play

Before they flew away

Nor yet would I deny
I would ask the same of you
But failing, will not die
Take up your china doll

And a little nervous from the fall
