    There was nothing like a grateful Dead concert.

    I love Bobby's feedback swells. It's one thing that doesn't get talked about often in his playing style. It was always a huge part of his sound in the later years. He's very underrated as an artist sometimes. So tasteful and modest. Always fitting in some swell or tremolo or sustain that fits into his "rhythm and ornamentation" style of guitar playing.I wonder what other rock stars would think about that style. Only in a loose band like the Dead. So cool.

    • @grendelum
      @grendelum 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @jamjax - i always wish he were mixed louder... he does incredible stuff you can barely hear, and yeah, total atmospherics master turning the guitar into something else.

    • @jamatoneblue
      @jamatoneblue 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good points. It goes to show that either he had very good control over the songs or the songs had very good control over him.

    • @lilacrain3283

      He’s the greatest rhythm player to ever do it in my opinion. More inventive and expressive than most lead players but always in a way that served the songs without taking any of the spotlight

      I went to hear him play acoustic duos with Phil a few years back. I felt like it was the first time I could hear what he was doing.

      I thought Bobby's playing was phenomenal.... even in the early days some of the stuff that he did on Europe 72 was instrumental in in my transformation from a stone Hendrix freak to Grateful Dead fanatic, the interplay of the guitars on Morning Dew and Ramble on Rose will never get old.... and of course that's just a few examples

    Utterly chilling. People assume the dead were just a hippy dippy band but this sets them apart- they covered such a range of emotions. No group of their popularity would dare handle a subject as painful and sensitive as suicide, but the dead completely captured it. Just look at Garcia's glance at 1:34. He wears the raw tragedy on his face after delivering the line of someone who's just taken their own life. "No I won't tell you a thing." Terrifying.

    I had a moment just now to watch a vid of D&C perform this tune with OB singing. I should say that I am no purist by any means. I kind of like D&C at times; I find them slow and plodding at others. They do a valiant job at bringing this delicate and profound song to life. OB seems to feel the lyrics, and I love--LOVE--the way he "feels" (at least in the version I watched) THE chord change (you know THAT one--before the best bridge ever!). In the performance I watched, he paused looked up with eyes closed and bathed in the surreal majesty of that moment. I loved the Hammond swells in the early break and Mayer's cascade of notes was reminiscent of Jerry's. But...BUT...then I watched THIS video! Oh man. Jerry the VOCALIST--so plaintive, so emotive, so much PATHOS. And the nearly perfect scattered trickle of notes, with a few bad ones that only give the song that much more drama and realism. And, Bob's sprinkled moody feedback. And, Brent's backup vocals--so, so strong (along with the harpsichord sound!). But then came the moment--the chord change, that break... I flew once again into a literary place like Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily": gothic, frail, haunted--but not as horrific of course. As usual, though, Jerry's voice and the backing vocals threw open the blinds and let hope shimmer in. And, left me teary and happy to have been taken there again... At their best, the GD were poetic with all the meaning that such a word packs: like good literature, they took you someplace else or made you someone else if only for a few moments. Because of this quality, I can enjoy D&C; I can delightfully lose my *&$^# with Phish. But I will always love the Grateful Dead!

    Old punk rocker here. It was a hippie for a couple years before I found my true calling. But don't tell anybody lol. And I never stopped loving a dead song. Just didn't talk about it much but now I'm older and I don't give a fuck what people think. I'm not even a punk anymore. And I think the left betrayed itself completely. So fuck the whole lot of hippies and punks who joined he establishment. Don't lie, I saw you wearing your mask your obedience mask that was never even necessary because of a bunch of Lies by Progressive establishment you don't have to 2B Maga 2 not follow fascist. But back to the song forget all that. But this song came into my head and I knew that I would find a live version with about 1 two three clicks away. And I found a venue that I actually saw the Dead at. It's all right. She's only a little fractured . just a little nervous from the fall. Can anyone tell me the meaning behind that line . those two lines is there? That anyone knows or is it about heroin LOL even if I never hear that there is it still has something for me I can't explain it. Just a little fractured. Little nervous from the fall. My wife is half Chinese so it is more cool for me I guess. Those Falls can be very painful
    If you doubt that the left has become fascist. Then explain why antifa was burning books in 2018. There are two kinds of people in the world . there are those who burn books and those who are against the burning of books. Furthermore there was a group in 1933 in Berlin Germany who burned books in public exactly like antifa did. In fact if you look up videos of antifa and this group called the SA or strormtroopers of the Nazi party . you will see they behaved exactly the same. I got more. I got plenty more. Instead of shutting it out try to listen to what I'm saying and and find the truth. Quit supporting the evil that is the establishment. Things have turned out different than we thought they were going to be. It wasn't just the conservatives behind it. It was a small minority of them along with a whole host of establishment Democrats. They are the ones that love evil and they're the ones who want nihilism and Chaos for the world. Don't help them. Don't speak up for them or follow their tricks of race to use against everybody. They have become the racist and I will prove that as well. you can talk to me and I will have evidence evidence logic examples for everything that I say. Quit fighting for the bad guys. the left betrayed itself. It is no longer worth anything. Be a man and go through your morning process just like I did. I was a hardcore leftist. I've helped them cheating elections. I know all about them and exactly who they are

    Great video! Yes, Jerry's wasted, but still great playing, and very soulful singing. ANd hey, we all make mistakes, right? I remember one concert when Bobby forgot some of the words to "Man Smart," and the audience filled them in with glee! Thanks, Duanebase:)

    note also that after the first solo when Jerry goes back into "yesterday I begged you" for the second time...Jerry says "yesterday I begged you...nor yet would I deny" instead of "I will not condemn you nor yet would I deny" Bob looks right at him like "you got this?"....lol

    Allow me to correct myself: with Brent it was accidental "speedball" OD (morphine ./ cocaine Cocktail)and In Gerry's case his heavy smoking was only one of his major health problems at the end of things. Both these guys were Addicted To Music. R.I.P.
