The moment when most big bass are lost. Heart starts pounding, adrenaline starts flowing, emotions take over.
He pushed the button on his reel and thumbed it instead of relying on the drag. He was ready for the the bull run right at the boat. The big ones will make a fool out of you if you let them.

He would have used ffs if it were available.
Why don't you just buy one, fish with it, and enjoy the sport... maybe even catch a few bigger fish or more fish than you might normally before you leave this life on Earth... Try that instead of pouting about it being not fare or saying its spotlighting bass.
That spotlight doesn't make them OPEN up their face up wide and suck in water behind your bait...
Reckon the caveman that invented a spear to stick fish with got just as much jealousy from all his old school unwilling to sway even a tiny bit type hide & watch neighbors... who ALL saw that NEW FANGLED FANCY spear he was using as they watched while he was thumpin' the hell out of a big fish dinner (*with his updated gear for fish, he even got enough time NOW, to mix & make up some hushuppies...) but we're too prideful to ask for help... Reckon they were just as envious of his advantage multiplying, fish gathering new tool... But, were STILL stubborn enough to just do nothing to try to help them be more efficient, because grabbing fish with ten fingers and 2 palms pretty unsuccessful usually. The ones who asked learned, enjoyed, and caught more fish...Those others hiding in the bushes afraid to ask and only wanted to poke fun and be jealous because of fear or their pride...
Well, I BELIEVE THEY ALL STARVED TO DEATH ULTIMATELY AND REALLY NO ONE REALLY CARED... THEY WERE WAYYY TO BUSY BEING SUCCESSFUL MEN HAVING FISH DINNERS...
      (*WITH HUSHPUPPIES TOO)
      Think about it.

@@zekethefishgeek8690 Zeke, I've had my time on the water. I fished some Bassmaster Invational tournaments back in the 90s. It was good because you had to study contour maps and learn to read your depth finder. Now you can watch the fish like a video game. I think it takes the learning process out of fishing. No more pitching and flipping docks and flooded willows. No more finding sunken brush piles, just turn on the video screen. Remember it's fishing not catching.

He put it in freespool so he could use his thumb for drag. Clicking back and forth while a fish is pulling is going to grind gears a little. We don't have to do that now as drags are better than they were then. But it's not the reel inherently sounding like that. Just a symptom of him being clever with what he's got.
