Union Says Boeing Retaliated Against 2 Engineers Who Raised 777 & 787 Issues

  • The Boeing saga continues. Amid whistleblowers coming forward and testifying in Senate hearings, the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) has alleged that Boeing had retaliated against two engineers who insisted on reevaluating previous engineering work on the Boeing 777 and 787 programs. SPEEA is a union that represents employees at both Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems.

At this point refusing to fly Boeing planes is certainly the right cause of action. At least in the future.
This 'safety' approach is rotten to the core. As much as I personally hate red tape, I am a programmer and don't work on safety relevant stuff. These procedures were put into place for a reason, like that stress on material was simulated, and if you use more force in alignment than assumed in the simulation that's invalidating the simulation and not going to go well long term.
The problematic part is that these kinds of failures are not predictable (if not aware of the shortcuts that were taken) and often happen at a later stage in the product lifecycle, so depending on when this happened, we're yet to see the magnitude of these issues. Potentially all Boeing airplanes that were subject to these shortcuts (which may be hard to trace, so potentially one has to consider all manufactured planes during that time) are ticking bombs just yet to go off. Which would ruin many companies on top of Boeing (Boeing users or their insurers).
What the hell OS wrong with these managers. I know shortsightnedness is a common affliction amongst some managers, but that magnitude...
The ironic part is that they did it to boost production, so the very reason they did it serves to increase the magnitude of the damage caused.

New to me that it actually comes out of legal practice, but its also somewhat common in normal (ab)use. Of course I don't intend to litigate against Boeing personally, I just make choices according to my judgment of their actions. Such as not flying Boeing.

You don't need to be an advanced aerospace engineer, or even a genius, to grasp the reality of what has been going at Boeing. Quality and safety are not important because these things take time and cost money. And money in their pocket and shares value (many bonuses are paid in shares too, so that's related) is the only thing that interests anyone who has decision power at Boeing. Of course, anyone who fails to follow this straight line has a hellish life. This will not change unless there is a HUGE change in management, and the changes have been cosmetic and to pretend that something is happening, when in reality it's business as usual in the past 20 years.
Building planes is a hassle and takes too much time, and Boeing management knows they can keep the ship floating for a long time by doing nothing and letting it go on. The US government will ultimately let things go on because it's in their best interest, or it will have to take the helm and of what remains to be seen. Boeing clearly knows that they will still get orders anyway, there's only another game in town and they have a huge backlog that only grows.
What amazes me is that there are airlines still ordering Boeing planes, because at some point the Boeing brand can be completely worthless. And that point is not that far, or unrealistic.

When you say, "Boeing retaliated", it is a lack of understanding how these companies work. Most likely some lower/mid-level projects leaders retaliated, not for protecting the company, but for protecting their own high-status careers. This situation happens regularly at all large aero companies. It is a result of the government mandating an authoritarian very hierarchical engineering team structure, specific paperwork bureaucracy (formal systems engineering and DO-254 pseudo-science) and project micromanagement with review/approved mini milestones. The final result is corruption at low levels of management..

Safety and quality is 80% culturally based. And culture is driven from the top. Therefore Boeing is screwed.

Those comments came on the heels of the statement the Union released regarding the actual employee responsible for the below average work. "We have successfully mediated the issue with the employee who failed, repeatedly, to do their job correctly. They will receive a 15% wage increase, and will work a 32 hour work week, and their title will become Operations Manager, Manufacturing." "Also, we hope Boeing will be able to fire additional management that were not directly related to the actual manufacure of the airframe.
