My dad figured out that I was cross eyed dominant before I turned 10. I'm right handed and left eyed. Right away he started teaching me to shoot a rifle left handed and teaching me to move a handgun over to the left but still shoot with my right hand... And I've been shooting that way for over 30 years.
As a kid in the 50's, I was left-handed by nature. However, it's a right-handed world. I was forced to write with my right hand. There were no left-handed bows, rifles, and such. So in order to use things around me, I became right-handed. But, I'm left eye dominant. So with a rifle, I lower the left eyelid a bit and sight easily with the right eye. With a handgun, I simply lower my head a little and move my head to the right getting perfect sight alignment. Not an issue for me. It's an automatic action, and I don't even think about it. It just happens.

Long guns though, I've just adapted to use my right eye while looking down the sights. I really need to get way more practice in shooting with my left side, with any type of gun. I can do it, but not as fast as right handed shooting. I need to shoot left handed as much as my right hand so it becomes just as natural as when I shoot right handed. Currently, it feels weird, like it shouldn't be on the left shoulder, or in the left hand... What I've been taught though, is the two hands, the right and the wrong...

Yep. I am one also. Left eye, right hand. I turn my head to the right and my left eye automatically picks up the front sight. If I stare straight ahead, my left eye fights my right eye. Just turn your head a little bit. It works. Rifles and shotguns are not a problem using my right eye. I don't know why, but it's fine.

I'm right hand dominate, and blind in my right eye. It took some time to adjust to shooting right handed, but with practice have become accustomed to it that it now is just a natural transition. If you don't give up, and accept the challenge you can accomplish what at first seems impossible.

Im 52 and never heard much about eye dominance, nor did I realize until doing the test just now here in my office, that I am extremely left-eye dominant, although right handed: and so cross-eye dominant. And yet, I've never had a problem shooting - but naturally (out of instinct I guess) just closed my left (dominant) eye when aiming. I'm thinking if I ever need to learn to shoot with both eyes open I might need a full auto weapon to hit the target.
It isn't too much of a difference with a pistol as it's with a rifle. I'm cross eye'd dominant myself and noticed that after practicing quick draws and sight acquisitions, matching my non-dominant hand with the dominant eye had much better and consistent sight acquisition results. Since then I've switched to my non-dominant hand (which ironically is also my rifle hand) and have been practicing that way since. It's now become natural and it's nice to have my hand match both pistol and rifle to my dominant eye. If you want to put the time, I think optimally it's better to switch and train to match everything to your dominant eye.

Learned this last week and started shooting with both eyes in one trip to the range. Just close your left eye and pick up the reticle with right eye and then open the left. It was that easy for me.

I practice shooting one handed weak side (left hand for me to simulate something like a broken right arm/wrist). I find that I utilize some of the described techniques here because I'm right eye dominate. Nice to know I'm not completely off base with training like that.
i am right hand strong left eye dominate I shoot rifles with my left hand and pistols with my right and it can be rough . I have a conceal carry and range qualified shooting right handed . I moved the pistol a little left and my head a little right and it worked out fine . doing a lot of practicing this way and it is getting easier and I am shooting better
Shift your arms to the left side to align your gun with the dominant eye. Practice drawing deliberately ending up in the same position instead of canting or turning your head which never works when youre threat focused or, canting the gun which negatively affects accuracy at longer ranges and overall recoil management.
this also made playing pool very frustrating I like various red-dot technologies to capture the sight picture with my right eye, and with both eyes open, have a good target picture and maintain peripheral vision. It is a crutch, but I am old.
I have incomplete dominance. My right eye is dominant however my left eye can take over in some situations. I found this out while I was doing precision driving during sugar beet and potato harvest. When my dominance shifted the truck would be a foot or so out of position. The good news is that because of this I can shoot rifle, pistol or archery with my left hand and I have had an injury so that I can’t shoot archery right haded.
I think that I use a combination of shifting the handgun with a slight head rotation. I should probably take a video to be sure. After many many draws, it just happens. Magic. 😉
I always wondered why my impulse was to aim with my left eye (I'm righty). I've been actively forcing myself to use the right but it doesn't feel comfortable or natural.
Try holding the gun directly in front of your nose rather than one eye. I had trouble with 2 eye open shooting pistols beyond 15 yards until I started holding my pistols in front of my nose rather than favored to one side. I shoot left handed with pistols and right handed with rifles. I can also write with either hand, hit and throw a baseball with either hand, play tennis with either hand etc.
Got a genetic condition which resulted in me having a weaker right eye, luckily I realized it so I switched to shooting left handed early on. The only part that sucks for me is that I have to get ambi everything.
It happened to me about 10 years ago. It really, really sucks. I still have to think about it as I bring the pistol up. I've thought of getting an eye patch to cover my dominant eye for a month to try to switch it.
According to the get closer to your eyes trick I'm not right eye dominant 😮. I was thinking that I was right dominant eye. The very sad thing is the gun range is now closed for a month 😢 I have to wait an entire eternity before test the left eye shooting. Pick something out in the distance and with both eyes open hold out a finger and cover that object. Now close one eye at a time. The one eye that keeps your finger on the object is the dominant eye.
You left out retrained your non dominant eye to be your dominant eye. Easily done with dry fire. I train a lot using my non dominant eye so i can use it on non dominant side barricades to reduce my exposure, especially my head.

Canting the head??? Aren’t we supposed to bring the gun up to our eye? If we are standing with correct shooting posture, then the gun will just come up to being in front of the eye that is dominant.
this advice sounds mainly for handguns. These wont really work for rifles. I have a friend who is right handed, and right eye blind, and he really only has the option of shooting left handed, which brings the down side of most guns are right handed. So he has trouble no matter what he does with a rifle.
I threw left handed as a quarterback for years but shoot right handed. Your eye dominance is irrelevant, shoot with a thumbs forward grip with BOTH eyes open. Watching fools like Nutnfancy shoot all hunched over one eye closed is ridiculous. It just shows bad technique. Both eyes open

I adapted to using rifle left handed and pistol right handed and boooooyyyyyyyy does it make for a slick and effective set up for my kit.

I'm right-handed and lefteye dominant. I shoot with both eyes open, but turn my head maybe 5 degrees to the right and it's no big deal.

Yes & shooting long guns sucks as I’m a righty but left eye dominant!! Then trying to shoot with a scope blows hard! Hand guns are fine !
Try Center Axis Relock, using both hands and both eyes. It will train your non-dominate eye for sure.

well as someone who is ambidextrous. what ever hand and eye has the target. 🫡💯🇺🇸
