    Loved, loved, loved it. Next do a three for all with Frank Aresti Of Fates Warning.

  • @davejohnsonmusic
    @davejohnsonmusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I was hugely into these guys since the late 80's. Perfect Symmetry, Disconnected and A Pleasant Shade of Grey are probably my favorite albums, at least out of the ones I had. Mark Zonder was insane!

  • @mysocalledknife07
    @mysocalledknife07 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Frank Aresti wrote "A World Apart", and his writing evolution is definitely worth further study ("Giant's Lore" from 1986, "In a Word" from 1988, and "Static Acts" and "The Arena" from 1989, plus his co-writing credits with Jim)
    Jim shared writing duties up through 1989's Perfect Symmetry, after which, he became the sole music writer, with occasional lyrical duties shared among band members.
    If you think the music is dark, try sitting through a session of reading their lyrics 🤣 (and this is where Frank & Jim most certainly diverge in paths and styles)
    Good stuff and excellent video.

    • @scottdunn2178

      Frank is one of my favorite guitarists. Fates just aren't the same without him.

    • @mysocalledknife07
      @mysocalledknife07 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@scottdunn2178 I agree. And, Frank is far more approachable from a fan's standpoint - he always answers emails and loves to hang out after shows (his Dragonspoon album was one of my favorites from the early 2000's). Really miss all of Frank's contributions to the band.

    • @scottdunn2178
      @scottdunn2178 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mysocalledknife07 I met him on the Parallels tour in 1991 in Phoenix, and he was really cool... I'm a guitarist so I was really picking his brain about his rig. I was blessed to see them on the Perfect Symmetry, Parallels, and Inside Out tours. I'm not digging the brand new album they put out at all, and like I said, Fates just aren't the same without Frank. There's just a hole in their sound without Frank's chimey clean tones and killer solos.
      Regards 🎸

    Great choice. There was a period there where Queensryche and Fates Warning were my two favorite 'sounding' bands. I do prefer Fates Warning's rhythm and chord changes to his lead playing, but it's all good.

    I was introduced to them from a fellow guitar player who i jammed with that was into them and I was into Queensryche and we swapped LPs because he wasn't familiar with them and I wasn't familiar with Fates Warning. He loaned me Night on Brocken and I lent him Warning and the EP. I've been a huge fan since. John Arch is hugely overlooked singer IMO.

    Thanks for doing this. Super interesting! Jim is a genius. It's that simple. And thanks for reminding me what a great song Lighthouse is. I don't give Darkness in a Different Light too much playtime these days, given how strong Theories of Flight was/is. And Arch/Matheos' Winter Ethereal... And Ray Alder's What the Water Wanted....And the new Armored Saint... Can't wait for Long Day Good Night. Hope it's not their last album! Peace.

    Hey David... thank you for this great video... I really like it... "Der Brocken" in Germany actually is giant hill - not like a mountain but for a hill really huge (it takes approx. 2 hours to walk up) in the northern territory of Germany (it is called "Harz" in English "resin")... the land around the "Brocken" is quite flat for miles and miles and that's why it really stands out... And yes, you're right, it is associated with Witches and Witchcraft... every year there is a thing we call "Walpurgisnacht" (that's when all the witches and sorcerers fly up to the hill and having their time, even making out with one another) from April, 30th to May, 1st... "Der Brocken" with its history became really famous when Johann Wolfgang Goethe mentioned it in his work and travelled there many times...
    Keep up the good work and greetings from Berlin, Germany

    Inspiring lesson. And I agree that Metal is not only about distortion, drop D tuning etc. Those clean spooky chords can be even more metal than just a sound. „Brocken“ btw is highest mountain in Northern Germany and on Walpurgis Night the witches and devils are on their way. We remember that Ronnie Dio sung about the „Lady Evil“ 👻

    Very cool lesson. Thank you for this. I think Jim Matheos is a brilliant composer. Jim tends to favor 2nd inversion chords on the guitar and lets the bass play the roots. I think it spreads things out more sonically. I'm sure there's plenty more of the FW catalog that you could delve into.

    A World Apart. Frank Aresti actually plays that intro... I learned how play it by watching him on both the Perfect Symmetry and Parallels tours. I know Frank was using an original black face Rocktron Intellifex and utilizing the 8-voice chorus during that time. And, you're playing through that intro a little fast.

    Great episode, I'm a huge FW fan: Could you do an episode about working with complex chording in a non-clean environment. There are times you dont want the sudden demarcation in a song that going from dirt to clean (or reverse), but the add 9 chord wont accept any tonal change. What can you do to pare a complex chord into a triad (or similar), but retain some of the tension that non-triads give you.

    What's funny, to me anyway, is that when I was a kid I loved Metallica. They were my favorite band for the longest time, then I started getting into Megadeth and they quickly eclipsed Metallica in the favor of my mind. Then, around 92 / 93, I got into Dream Theater with Images and Words. I loved (and still do) Dream Theater, then Kevin Moore left them and ended up joining Fates Warning for the Pleasant Shade of Gray album. These days, I'll often elect to hear Fates over Dream Theater. I love these guys. This video was really cool to watch, especially the Lighthouse portion. Alternate tunings are so unique and fun and I need to experiment with them more.

    6:10 The first music store I worked at was Meniketti Music in Oakland (owned by Dave's grandfather), and he had 2 Seagull guitars witch I sold in the first couple of days I worked there. The rest of the guitars were total garbage though and I could never sell any of them. The action was horrible and this as we all know makes them unplayable unless you use a slide. The Seagulls were great though, played and sounded beautiful.

    2:37 That's my gripe with the metal guitar world. Too many look down on clean tones. As this video demonstrated, clean tones can be haunting and metal AF. There's not enough tonal variety when players limit themselves to high gain amps.
