    My top tips:
    1. If you want to, you will be able to keep in touch with your friends from home. They’re still there even though you don’t see them constantly.
    2. Don’t feel pressure to go out constantly. There’s no shame in staying in for the night, especially if you have lectures the next day.
    3. Don’t feel ashamed if you go home often. That’s perfectly fine!
    4. Take loads of joggers and sweatshirts! (Comfy clothes)
    5. Make friends on your course if you can - makes lectures a whole lot less lonely.
    6. Don’t have too high expectations. I think it’s best to go into it with no expectations at all. Because then you won’t be let down or disappointed.
    7. Don’t compare your uni experience to others, especially based on social media. People make it look like they’re having a better time than they are.
    8. Don’t change yourself or try and recreate yourself because you won’t be able to sustain it. Just be yourself, same as you were at home. Then you’ll find people you really get on with. Rather than being someone you’re not.
    9. Definitely try societies - makes it feel like you’re more involved with uni life.
    10. Give yourself a certain amount of money to spend a week and make sure you don’t go over it. But also don’t let worrying about money stop you doing something. If you go a little over it, it’s fine.

    i'm going into second year this year and i thought i'd share my number one tip (and it's kinda negative so apologies): don't have really high expectations for university in general. i was quite let down by the uni 'experience' and i struggled to make friends even though i tried many times to, but i just couldn't find people i clicked with (though that's more so because i go to a london university, so i never had the traditional campus university experience and a lot of people commuted in rather than living in halls like myself). but i have heard that some people do make good friends in their second/third year at uni, so it is not the end of the world if you struggle to make genuine friends during first year, a lot of people i have spoken to have been through something similar so you're definitely not alone if you do experience this. also, please please please don't be afraid to reach out to the university counsellor or speak to your course lecturers if you feel that your mental health is suffering, it really helped me in dealing with the over-whelming aspects of university

    • @jess22430
      @jess22430 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Glad I’m not the only one that felt this , I feel the negative sides to uni are not talked about enough. I set very high expectations of what uni would be like and so when I did struggle with mental health and making friends, I felt even more isolated as I thought I was the only one and I should be having the time of my life. I didn’t know where to turn. I do have some really good memories and have made some close friends but it definitely didn’t live up to what I first imagined.

    • @charlottefray8908
      @charlottefray8908 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I joined a society in my first year and made friends through that, I think without that I would’ve struggled to make a lot of friends. And in comparison to people that aren’t in societies, people in a society just tend to know more people and have more friends

    • @KB-dq3dd
      @KB-dq3dd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m the exact same, going in to third year and lived in halls first year but didn’t really make great friends with my flat mates (didn’t hate each other but just weren’t going to be my besties) second year I commuted but found that then I never was able to go out with my course friends bc none of them had to travel and I’d be going there and back alone. The only good thing is that I do geography so we have a lot of tile to bond as course mates on our field trips (Rona ruined our best trip so that made another impact on friends) I might try joining a society this year but I’m not sure because I’m commuting again

    i've just graduated. few things i wish i knew, especially the last few years. drink and go out and meet as many people as you can (if thats your thing) cause you'll never get uni years back again. the real world hits after... believe me. i barely went out during final year and definitely should have went more, looking back. take advantage of having girl flatmates and share wardrobes instead of buying new clothes all the time! it's good to budget but i was in my overdraft and had the best time ever spending it all, so try not to over stress too much about money. we're students, we have plenty of years ahead to be sensible about money ahah. also, lectures are literally so pointless (for me anyways), i went to very few and managed to get a high 2:1. BUT make sure you take advantage of your dissertation supervisor as much as possible- thats what they get paid for, so dont feel guilty pestering them hahahaha.

    • @TheAllanamclachlan
      @TheAllanamclachlan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aryan Azeem yeah! Very true. It’s all subjective, I suppose! There were 150 people in my class and usually only about 20-30 went to lectures ahahah. I worked hard when it came to revision, assignments and asking my supervisor for help, which is probably why I managed to get that. I’m definitely not naturally smart :)

    a tip from me: don’t feel like you have to go into uni accommodation - private student accommodation is amazing too! there will be other students there in your year group and above. it’s a different kind of experience but if you’re wanting something a bit more chill i’d recommend it. more often than not they’re a lot nicer in terms of living (rooms kitchens etc) and the people are usually more like minded! i’m not a big going out person (i hate freshers) so i decided to go private and it was the BEST decision. i didn’t feel left out if i didn’t wanna go out, i found things easier to handle and more chill. (i’ve been in both uni accom & private accom before). but saying that the people there are up for a night out too and there are lots of international students too 💗💗

    I agree on not buying tickets for freshers - I had a wristband (my whole flat bought them) and I think we only went to two of the nights that were covered by them. I've graduated but my biggest advice is that if you don't feel right or are unhappy then you can do something about it. Don't feel bad about changing courses, moving accommodation, dropping out or transferring, only you know what's right for you! (I transferred which shocked all my friends from before uni because from what they saw on Instagram and Snapchat - I was having an amazing time)

      Lily Collings that shows that even though most people act like they’re having an amazing time on social media when in reality they are struggling, and I think that’s such an important thing to remember! I think my biggest tip would be to not compare your uni experience to what you see of other people’s uni experiences on social media - because lots of them will be acting like they’re having the best time on social media but deep down they might not be enjoying it as much as it appears they are

    • @katiejones3487

    • @RebeccaBurrows

      @@samanthabay4713 I usually divide my student loan up into how many weeks I need it to last and try not to go over the limit for that week, and then figure out how much I spend on food / nights out / uni things etc by kind of trialling it in the first week?? and not go over those individual amounts either eg £20 on food. if that makes sense :))

    I've just graduated from LJMU.
    I loved this video and here are some of my points from my uni experience in Liverpool☺️
    - I would totally agree with NOT buying a wristband for Freshers week! I genuinely think I used mine once...
    - Shop at Aldi or Lidl if they're close by! It's SO much cheaper than Tesco, Asda etc.
    - Comfy clothes are KEY!! (Joggers and a hoodie ofc)
    - Definitely talk to as many people as you can. It can be hella scary but you'll regret not taking the first step!!
    - It took me until second year to make a solid friendship group, so don't feel pressured to have your best friends in the first year, it takes a while to adjust and that's normal!!
    - Accommodation staff in my experience were great and always able to help with any problems, or if you just need a general chitchat with someone different from your flat.
    - I bought a student card which included a Railcard which saved me TONS of money when travelling home. However I'd not recommend giving into your overdraft if it can be helped
    Xxx

      @emmapoole21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @emilyalice2765

    I'm going into my third year in September and honestly I'm not even bothering with freshers at all. For the past two years, my freshers flu developed into Pnemounia and Sepsis so it's not worth forcing my body through that. There will be other times to go out too.
    Joining a sports club/society was definitely the best thing I did, gives me something to look forward to on those tougher weeks.
    Also, I'd definitely say, make time for yourself. It gives you time to think, to relax and lessens you feeling overwhelmed!

    Freshers this year will look very very different. It’s not going to be a week of partying this year, and with the strain in uni funding now it’s unlikely it will be like it was anytime soon. This video is quite focused on uni life then the work etc, but the one thing I would say work wise is start as early as possible. And if it’s a professional course try and do as much experience as possible, shadowing a researcher etc is an invaluable asset whilst your at uni.

    I have to agree with the lonely part, you do have to put yourself out there. In my first yeaar I wanted to join Netball club (society) just for the socials but I didnt have the confidence, last year I joined doing socials most weeks, and now this year I'm actually social sec!
    P.s. I didnt get freshers flu in my first year, but I did last year!

    My freshers week was the best ever! And buying a wrist band was the best thing ever, we saved so much money and could skip queues and went to every event, it was completely worth it for me and my housemates :) just do your research, but some tickets are deffo worth it

    I'm 25 so have long since graduated uni. My biggest advice is to be totally selfish when it comes to who you live with. Sounds obvious, but I ended up living with people in third year that I really wasn't keen on and eventually ended up hating. I have none of them on facebook or socials and I wish I had lived with people from my course, rather than people I got 'stuck with' from freshers!

    The uni experience has been completely different for me, just from being 2 years older than most people starting, as I wasn’t fussed about freshers/going clubbing and I already have my own flat with my bf so I didn’t mix with people on my course tbh 😅

      @KB-dq3dd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Literally me! I’m only a year above but my boyfriend and are so settled we aren’t huge going out people but I tried anyways and hated it😂 felt like I was babysitting these fresh 18y/o’s. I made friends on my course but we hardly ever see each other we just help each other out before a deadline 🥴

    Don’t agree fully on the ‘don’t buy wristbands’. I’ve brought a wristband every year for freshers at my uni as soon as they go up for sale. It’s a small city, so one company runs all freshers events. Wristband gives you free entry, queue jump and money off drinks, so definitely worth it in my situation. Would definitely suggest speaking to people from the uni you are going to, to find out what’s the best option for that city/uni. Although I 100% agree with not buying tickets, normally scams and not hosted in proper venues ❤️ This year freshers will be a lot different however, so maybe this year it’s good advice to steer clear of freshers events and stick to meeting and getting to know your housemates/course mates and new city!
    A top tip I’ve learnt from three years at uni so far is take time out to be a tourist in the city you’re living in. Go to the tourist attractions, find local pubs, go for walks, even book a hotel for the night because otherwise you get so caught up in uni and building a new life, you get into your final year and realise that you never experienced and appreciated your surroundings 😊

    A lot of this is irrelevant for corona times but I’m glad you said that we will make friends. Also if we’re GOING to get freshers flu that means we’re all going to get the rona and I’m scared of that. But otherwise this is helpful thanks.

    As a student who lived at home the first year I felt like I’d missed out of the uni experience (as my flat mates last year didn’t really talk to me) I did manage to have the going out experience with people who I work with but I did make friends with people on my course who I am living with next year. My uni experience is different from my friends but I wouldn’t change it for the world. There is no right way of doing uni and as long as you come out of it happy with your experience it was definitely worth it
