This show crashes centuries worth of history into a couple of generations of characters. Its historically authentic in feel rather than historically accurate in terms of dates, events, people. E.g Alfred was the youngest of five brothers, and was also not the son of a monk lol
I think there's a legitimate reason why you guys felt different while watching this particular episode. Sailing up the Seine River and laying siege to Paris was the defining moment of the REAL Ragnar Lothbrok, so the creators of the show probably wanted to make this arc of Season 3 extra well-done.

Historians don't think they actually made it as far as China, but they did have trade with them, since Chinese silk has been found in Viking settlements.

The clue is in the name, like Northumbria is in the north and East Anglia is in the East. ;) I'm thinking maybe they sailed around England on the east and sailed through the English channel and then down the Seine River that flows right through Paris...or maybe right past Paris at that time, can't remember. Viking ships can sail on sea and down rivers both. (Yes, I'm sorry, I babble on about this shit. I'm a history nerd, and this is one of my favorite time periods to study.)
