The Hunt For The Lost 6000 Shipwrecks Of WWII

  • Scattered around the coasts of the world are ticking time bombs, so far virtually unknown to the public; 6,300 wrecks, sunk in the Second World War, have been rusting away in the sea for over 70 years. The threat they pose goes way beyond all the oil spill catastrophes ever experienced. In 1989, the tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground off Alaska, polluting the coast with 37,000 tonnes of leaked crude oil. That’s just a fraction of what’s assumed to lie in the wartime wrecks. Researchers estimate they still hold up to 15 million tonnes of oil.
    The film takes us to the Baltic coast of Poland, to Norway, to the USA and the Pacific Ocean. We accompany scientists examining how badly the seabed is already contaminated in some places by seeping oil. They monitor critical wrecks and develop hazard scenarios. They warn that the oil in quite a few sunken ships must be pumped away as a matter of urgency.

    Unlikely math. 15 million tons of oil divided by 6,300 wrecks would equal 2,381 tons of oil per wreck. Freighters of the time probably ranged from 1,000 tons to 5,000 tons in total.

    There are *natural* oil seeps all over the world, including under the sea. Whatever the environment, you can bet that some kind of lifeform is taking advantage of it and that includes areas with oil, radiation and anything else.

      The problem is that the ships rust, and will dump a lot of oil rather rapidly. And that can't be taken advantage of within a short time, resulting in rather large areas of dead ocean.

I can see how it damages ocean ecosystems but at the same time I feel like the amount of wrecks similar to the one seen here, even however in mass numbers they are, wouldn’t even pose a threat to anything with respect to the size of our oceans. Just my thoughts.

    Do you have a complete list of the Ships in the 5-150m range (I'm a P.A.D.I OWDI, a IANTD and G.U.E. Tech Diver). I have dove the Hermes off Sri Lanka, U.S.S. New York (Subic Bay), an LST (Subic Bay), U.S S. Huston and H.M.A.S. Perth (Java Sea - these could have oil) and we located a preciously unlocsted wreck in Sri Lanska (we found an (Auxillary Ship which was a fuel tender but it took bombs right in the tank). The War ships we "look but don't toich" as they are official "War Graves" both in a legal sense or if not depending on law snd location, it is still an ethical isssue for, at least the people I dive with, so any disturbance should only be done if there is an environmental risk and done with disclosure and in a respectful way. Yes, all the fisherman fish on wrecks and they both have helped us find wrecks but thier nets and lines are a huge hazard to us. We also are aware there is fsr more than oil on the warships. There are potentially tons of high explosive, which all can be "live" especially the "primers" in the "fuse room". When we dive these we are very careful to not disturb anything and to have the historic maps of the ships (US and UK WWII Ships the blueprints are available on request. Exactly,.the ammunition is still potentially and likely live on wrecks beyond 50m as any deeper to go there for long or to enter requires technical wreck diving training, special gas mixs, snd / or semi or closed circuit refreshers.

    They could easily retrieve most of the oil/fuel if they WANTED to! We now have deep-sea drilling capability & deep-sea recovery ability, so the only excuse is "who is going to pay for it?" They forget that any recovered oil/fuel can probably be recycled/re-refined & that would significantly offset the costs, but no one thinks about that for some reason? Most wrecks are closer to the surface than where they currently drill undersea wells. If they can waste billions on defence, they can certainly manage preventative draining of these wrecks. It's a no-brainer really....prevent future damage to the ecosystems.

    • @Jinkuzu
      @Jinkuzu ปีที่แล้ว

      You gotta find all the ships which go fing luck.
      Just shoving down a drill to bore under the ocean floor is alot easier then have to have very delicate work to extract oil from ships. Who likely have weaker steel so you need to be careful and you wont have people that far down to carry that out in a good manner.
      Also live ammunition is a thing.
      Plz common sense its not that easy as you may belive it is.
