  • Manganese nodules do look like carbonized cauliflower and are supposed to be the new source of iron for our technologized society. But them lying on the floor of the Pacific, approximately four kilometers deep, poses a big problem.

    There is plenty of research being conducted by research vessels & marine biologists, Okeanos, Falcor, Nautilus, ONC have all been exploring the deep sea floor & bringing up nodules & sea life. All are online on TH-cam, live dives into the abyss. Interesting to see a documentary on the subject. The expense to bring these up from such great depths far outweighs profits. Maybe a good idea to wait till 2077, other natural & manmade events could wipe out life as we know it by then

    A corporation should be allowed to mine the sea floor only if 95% of its assets and value are based on fishing in that area. To estimate roughly, a company with one small mining ship would need 19x as much tonnage in actively used fishing vessels, 19x as many employees involved in fishing as are involved in mining, etc. So if the company does anything to ruin the sea environment, they will also be destroying the value of their fishing assets.
    That should be the very first restriction, not the only one. But you need the miner to care more about the environment than anyone else does. Only then will there be any chance they abide by regulations to protect the environment.

    • @LimeChill7
      @LimeChill7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with your idea! But many of the people, won’t be around to see the long term effects. They would have to care about a legacy fishing that area as well.

      Why couldn't it be done automatically on a large scale? We have highly efficient methods of selecting viable vs reject produce at speeds your eye can't keep up with, picking rocks off the mud with minimal disturbance seems very doable to me.

      @@Mrbfgray Large scale gold mines strip the entire surface down to pay dirt, that will happen on the sea floor, or already is happening.

    • @Mrbfgray
      @Mrbfgray ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Box545x39 These things can be stringently regulated. For example--seafloor nodules could be individually plucked from the surface with minimal disruption to the mud, particularly with AI (artificial intelligence)
      . A wide platform hovering above the floor with multiple robotic arms snatching the chunks as it progresses along. Thrusters would be well above to eliminate kicking up plumes of sediments.
      The operation would be continuously monitored in real time to verify minimal disruption, lights an cameras. If all that rigor delays economic implementation, so be it. The fact that those nodules are so uniquely concentrated in valuable minerals will likely eventually make it viable.
      Comparisons to traditional gold mining is silly, not only is gold of limited, almost no utility, but the ore bodies in question are radically different.

    • @Box545x39

    • @Mrbfgray
      @Mrbfgray ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Box545x39 I think most do grasp it, regardless they will either embrace it or not be involved at all. While I lean heavily Libertarian for good reason, externalities like the environment must and can be regulated. Market forces alone don't consistently account for such tho customers of said products can and often do enforce high standards, others will not.
      Figure out how to comply or forget about it. There needs to be international standards which is a big hurdle.
      Currently--reckless methods and over fishing from the likes of China is a far bigger concern, similar for the dams that have gutted the previously spectacular salmon runs decades ago to the present in Pacific N. West. USA fisheries are mostly properly controlled.

    Saying asking this generation of smart phone users to be responsible. It's not the users that need to be responsible. The manufacturers come out with new phones every year or 2. Our phones already have literally the knowledge of the entire world in them. They can navigate, they connect us. Yet every new IPhone or Galaxy that comes out, people act like these awesome phones aren't as good anymore because there's a new model and everyone throws their phone away to buy a new 1. This is the manufacturers fault. They don't care about resources or the earth, they just want those mountains of money
