I live in Germany. We have Aldi and Lidl. I like Lidl more but I also try to check the discount in other markets too. (since watching your videos for the last couple of months) Our food budget decreased from 700€ to 500€ for the last two months for 4 people. I might not spend the whole money this month so I plan to reduce even more for the next month. The pantry grocery helped me a lot. Your method to divide the food budget into 5 was eye opening for me. Since then I am gradually building up my pantry while I spend even less than before. So thank you❤
I don't think it will be double. I'm not sure what you bought last time, but I think my typical bill is close to 20% more/less stuff than 18 months ago.
I prefer Lidl I think the quality is a bit better. Aldi seem to stuff the shelves and are a messier store. I’m in UK so don’t know how it compares to yours. There’s much more junk food in Aldi IMHO.
lol, love the collaboration with you and Daniel! 😂The bets, the war of the beans and Daniel’s great stage presence made this video so much fun. Not so fun is the reality of a 15% price increase in food at what is considered a bargain food store. Thanks as always, Under the Median!
We have Aldi, Lidl, Save-a-lots and Walmart all within 1 mile of each other in my local town. I really like & prefer Aldi of the 4. The prices have gone up slightly on most items I buy, but I find the quality is still there. Although 15% increase may not sound like much, that increase in 18 months is kind of a lot. I planted a garden today hoping to offset my grocery costs for this summer and fall.
I’m on my honeymoon in Strasbourg, France with major insomnia from the jet lag and I am watching your video! Such a comfort to see yours and Daniel’s friendly faces while abroad !
@@CassieDavis613it is very beautiful, much smaller than Paris with lots of old German and French architecture, tons of shopping and eateries, only about 20min from the German border. English-friendly for the most part (I speak French though so that’s not been an issue) but definitely touristy (not necessarily a bad thing) in some parts. Overall very charming if a bit colder than expected haha
My daughter and I play this “guess the amount” every time we go to aldi. I am working to teach her how to budget and appreciate the meals that we make at home. So happy to see other families playing the same “aldi games”. Another fun idea: can you load the belt before the cashier is finished (I.e can you beat them?). Good luck!!
I remember the cheap tomato paste Hope!!! $.24 was the price, maybe in 2020? It doubled to $.57 at least 2 years ago here. $.81 is ridiculous imho. That's a 300%+ increase. There is NO way to justify that. Tomato paste, lentils and sardines are what I buy to donate to the food pantry.
In Europe the prices of tomato products have gone up because many crops have failed due to the extreme heat. Don’t know about where you are, but over here we don’t genetically modify produces, so I expect it to continue to rise in price with rising temperatures. Same with all the failed Olive crops. Sh!t will hit the fan in the next decade I think.
I think that the items that really went up in price are cocoa, coffee and meat. I think that meat has gone up 600% in the last 8 years. You are lucky to be vegetarian. I am making our meat portions smaller and adding more beans to our menu. It won't be long and we will be harvesting a bit from the garden, which is always nice.
Aldi’s used to have a great deal on both spring mix and kiwis. They are still a little cheaper on kiwis and bananas. While their prices have increased, they are still cheaper on a lot of things. Some of their Aldi savers are fantastic. I paid 95 cents for a whole large pineapple.
I was curious to see what your haul would cost where I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. I took your list and plunked it into the No Frills grocery store app to see the total. I went with the lowest price items available with the majority being store brand. Bread $1.97, Avocado - $1.99, Sliced mushrooms $1.29, 2 cans of tomato paste $2 ($1 each), 2 cans diced tomatoes $3.58 ($1.79 each), 2 cans of black beans $2.98 ($1.49 each), kidney beans $1.49, Garbanzo beans $1.49, green beans $1.29, 3 cans of corn $3.87 ($1.29 each), 1 box of chocolate pudding mix $1.39, Rotini pasta $2.00, Farfalle pasta $2.49, taco shells $3.99, Refried beans $3.00, Taco Seasoning $1.49, Mexican style rice $3.00. For a grand total of $40.80. Even with the exchange rate, it's still almost $10 above US pricing. No wonder I only shop sales 😂
That was really interesting because I noticed their prices going up and that now I can often beat their prices by shopping the sales at our local Krogers. I would have guessed more of a 20 percent jump at least here in WV.
I used to go to Aldi 6 years ago when I lived in Miami and I have missed it tremendously since moving to Oregon. I am visiting Nebraska and was thrilled to check it out. I was unimpressed with the prices and the selection.
I live in eastern pa and they opened a new store just down the street from me recently and closed one that was not too far from me but I would have to drive there. I went there once and haven't been since. I think the prices went up significantly.
Just about everything I buy has doubled or tripled in price over the last year. Raisin bread was 99 cents now it’s $2.00 a loaf. Crazy times we live in. In your shopping trip, did you also compare the size of the pkg? Most pkg sizes have also decreased meaning the cost is actually more.
I went there yesterday after not going there for about 2 weeks. The prices have risen. They are no longer cheaper than the supermarket that I usually shop at. 😩. Daniel you are adorable.
I think many stores are adjusting their sales by offsetting some of the basic things like bread , milk, eggs, sugar, coffee etc. because people buy them no matter the price . That way the store can bring in some seasonal products like live plants and housewares and small electrics which bring in a higher per item margin.
Aldi’s here in NH is still much cheaper than any other grocery stores in our area (NH). Since we shifted to start our weekly shopping there. Our overall grocery bills dropped significantly.
We haven't been to Aldi's in a few years. Before Easter, we checked out the flier that came in the mail to see how their prices compared to our local supermarket's. Hams at Aldi's cost about 50 cents more than at our store, and the rest of the flier's prices were only a few pennies less than the supermarket's. We decided it didn't make sense to drive a half hour away just to save what the gas to get there would cost. To save $$$ we eat almost no beef and pork, and we never buy convenience foods.
Another great video! Your video is an eye opener for me, because I don't buy any of the items listed in your video from Aldi. I make a spelt and golden flax seed bread, I can my own tomatoes, beans are from dry or green beans are frozen beans from the garden, rice I buy bulk from the Amish and I buy mushrooms fresh. I try to can most of my food to stay away from tin cans because they are lined with BPA plastics. Aldi grass fed organic butter went up to $6 a lb but the price is now down to $5.50 on sale. I will not buy for now and I will see if the bulk food store gets it in again for $3.50 for Organic Valley Butter. I buy seafood at Aldi and prices have gone up a little. I have been buying fresh caught USA gulf coast shrimp 12 oz bag for $7. A bag is good for 3-4 servings. Aldi had ham from Easter on sale 99 cents a lb and cooked two of them up and placed them in the freezer. Aldi boneless skinless chicken breasts sell for $2.49 and it has stayed at that price for a year. The meat sale at another store sold it for $2 lb if you buy 10 lb bags. I think I bought enough for a year. I try to buy what is on sale or stock up on the high quality/hard to get foods like shrimp.
It's because of inflation, I started several years ago to purchase a flat of certain foods at a time. I haven't done the math, but I think that it gave me a cushion for future inflation, but it's great to know that if you want mushrooms in your spaghetti sauce tonight, you have more cans of mushrooms for chicken and mushrooms over rice next week.
It is a lot less expensive if you make up your own Taco Seasoning. I make a huge batch and put it in a Mason jar. Yes prices at Aldi have increased, but the new price is still lower than what I would pay at my other local grocery stores.
I’ve noticed food prices jumping up and down a lot. Easter a dozen eggs $2.02 and now back up to $2.48. There are still great sales, last week chicken quarters $0.59lb and canned tuna $0.75. Chicken quarters were $0.59 on sale pre C19 and are back to $0.59 on sale.
I live in the UK and food prices have gone up alot here too. Luckily fresh fruit and vegetables aren't too bad but butter, milk and other staple items have gone up 100% since COVID in 2020 and salaries are going up by 3-5% 😢
how do you make the pudding without cow milk. do you use coconut milk or something. we love pudding in our house but a few of us cant have milk so we havent had it in a while
The thickeners are in the mix - probably cornstarch would be my guess. So, pudding will thicken. But, coconut milk has a lot higher fat content than almond milk. So, it makes it thicker and creamier. You can use cashew milk, too. We've used almond milk, but it's not as thick.

People all over, don't compare prices with the last 10 years or even the last 5 years, we are all comparing price increases that happen monthly!
Over 18 months thats only went up 5 percent every 6 months on food cost and inflation. Not terribly bad considering dollar tree is going up to 1.75 and 7 dollars is their cap on the plus items So after taxes youll be paying near 2 dollars for what used to be 1 dollar

Lidl has better prices and sale prices in my area. To go the lowest, I shop several stores. I agree with the 1/5 of budget set aside for good deals.
I don't think it will be double. I'm not sure what you bought last time, but I think my typical bill is close to 20% more/less stuff than 18 months ago.

Danielle was right we need the pudding. Yes sadly stuff is up like 115% for lots of things. Gardens help for sure. Be blessed everyone.

Prices have gone up, as well as minimum wage, social security, va compensation, and welfare.
15% increase is crazy. Can't imagine how much higher it would be for those of us who eat meat and eggs
i think in singapore, almost nothing except for bread (a single bun) costs less than $1
