  • In this video, I will about the refractive index and its determination from UV-Visible absorption spectra. Refractive index it the measurement of how light propagates through a material. Higher the refractive index, slower will light travels through the material, that changes its direction. It is a very essential optical constant and plays an important role in designing optical devices.
    It provides us information related to
    1. Local field
    2. Polarization
    3. Phase velocity of light

    It doesn't look correct.
    1. Why it is less than 1? The spped of light is higher that in vacuum in this material. Why. it has just normal absorption.
    2. Why it has no imagine part? It based on absorption spectra, so it must have imagine part.
    3. Possible it is calculation of imagine part of refractive index because of it based on absorption spectra. If yes explain it.

    Thank you for your interesting review, but you made a mistake in the equation application of n. You should put 1/2 between quotation marks. The result will vary.

    hello sir, I want to know the formula to which thickness or volume information is added.
    I want to find out before and after curing of the solution, but the current formula yields a refractive index of 5 or more.

    Thank you very much for your video. I am wondering if I could use these formulas for my liquid sample (not thin film). If I put my sample solution into Spectrophotometer Quartz Cuvette having a thickness of 1cm, then can I also calculate the refractive index likewise you present here? or your procedure is only applicable for thin-film.

    Thank you very much for the video, it has helped me with my project. I was wondering, if I may be so forward, to ask - if I have a plot of absorbance of a pollutant vs time, can I use this information to find the refractive index of my thin film nanotubes (doped titanium dioxide) or would I need specific spectroscopy results performed on the nanotubes themselves?

    • @nanotutes
      @nanotutes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, if you have absorbance vs wavelength plot, you can.

      @@nanotutes thank you very much for your reply. Unfortunately the graph I have is the absorbance of Methyl Orange (AU at 462nm) vs time as it measures the decrease in absorbance of the pollutant overtime during the UV irradiation. I have spectroscopy of the UV emissions against light intensity but not against the absorbance. I do not know if any of this is useful. Thank you again

      You need to measure abosrbance of you thin film at long range of wavelength not the for dye solution.
