Maple Speaker Cone

  • A Big Leaf Maple tree root weighing 270Kg (600 lbs.) is mounted on a VB36 wood lathe and turned into a 45Kg (100lb.) speaker horn for a wealthy client. His primary goal was pretty furniture, not acoustic performance from the parabolic form.
    Many think this turning is dangerous, many think it's a waste of wood; However, a stump with ingrown rocks was given a life and the internal beauty of the wood was revealed.

      Yeah, I recall the customer getting absolutely thrashed for finishing it in boat varnish or something. 😂

    What do you use to fill all the holes and cracks with ?
    But the finish product is amazing

      The inside of the cone was acoustically uniform and artifacts on the outside remained natural as how the tree grew. No filling
