I assume this was for the prix de rome.... if this didn't win then what did??
Beautiful, but not yet wonderful as Ravel is. Too much Wagner, Fauré in it : they had to leave for the wonder to happen.
I hear influences of Tchaikovsky and Puccini, but who cares. It's remarkable for so young a composer still finding his voice. There's an English translation in the French published score.
