    One of the most common questions I get is about shooting events for the first time with a flash. This is not a simple answer as every camera system treats flash a little differently. The safe, shoot answer is P Mode with ETTL if you are unsure. Many camera systems (not all) will detect a flash in AV mode and turn it into a slow sync mode, which drags the shutter speed, even up to 1 second of longer in some cases. You do not want this in event photography. Some Canon cameras will let us set the shutter speed limits and in those cases, you would be ok. There are some other options such as shooting in manual with a locked in SS, and using ETTL.
    I hope this clarifies your questions! Best wishes!

    Thank you for explaining how aperture priority mode looks with a Speedlight. I struggled so much for years because I didn't know this and I scrapped the flash for natural light because I was so frustrated.

    Love it - Great video. Quick bottom line. Though I like all-manual camera AND flash shooting, just cannot all of those adjustments quickly enough for events. Your video is the real-life solution. just let all the technology help for those instant shots.

      Yazeed Saber practice! The worst thing new photographers do is to try to use gear in a real situation without practicing practicing practicing. You don’t get better playing violin by stepping onto a stage, you practice first. Take pictures of you dog cat or bird in bright light in shadows etc.

    Hi Mike. Really enjoy your videos. Have moved up to the Canon R6 and a Godox V1flash. Got a couple of candid shoots coming up with people moving around - elementary age kids at their school (fast moving) and 50th hs reunion (not so fast moving). Do you recommend Program Mode with TTL over Manual? Anything you got that will help me out? Thanks.

    Thanks, i shot a wedding in av mode with flash. lots of photos came out grainy, i presume the camera was whacking up the iso? So in p mode what is is best? auto iso or set it at say 800 upwards in low light?

  • @MontrencoPerez

      auto iso mode!
      when i started photography i followed advices from 'pro', and set my camera to the lowest iso possible and struggled getting good images because i had to increase the exposure time and get blurry images... one day i realized that image noise is better than blurry image, so i switch to T/S mode 1/200, auto iso and i start getting much better pictures.

    • @itsmemad

      For events, you can set the ISO according to the lighting. Like 1600 or 3200 and shoot in Program Mode, i.e, auto aperture and auto shutter.. just make sure that you're getting the shutter speed above 1/60 as mentioned in the video by bumping your ISO from 1600 to 3200 if the former is pushing the shutter lower.

  • @tommy2z2z
    @tommy2z2z 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The one caveat that ought to be mentioned is using P mode and auto flash but normally adding a little plus exposure compensation as needed -- usually the results tend to lean underexposed otherwise

  • @SonnyCrackBeats
    @SonnyCrackBeats 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm an Olympus user and P mode with flash is terrible. Always gets blurry shots because the shutter speed goes so low for some reason. I've found you can get better results in Shutter priority, just stick between 100 or higher.

  • @dansr8342

    Great video ... short and to the point. I always tend to use the P mode (which I've had great success) with fill in flash (to clean up the shadows). In your video, you mention using the P Mode with ETTL flash. Within in the video, you mention auto ISO (which I just started using)> So ... for event photography indoors or outdoors, would you recommend using the P Mode with ETTL flash ... and ... auto ISO ???

    doesn't flash freeze the motion? I think it does even if a shutter speed is relatively slow (e.g. 1/30-1/60). We won't kill ambient light then.

    • @MMaven

      The Godox TT350 is a decent model and does not break the bank or your back. It’s not the most powerful flash, but it’s small. Make sure to get the model made for Canon. There are plenty of reviews on TH-cam. You get a very full feature flash for the price.

    In my opinion, and from my personal experience the Tv mode + auto ISO is the best to start with because the motion blur is the ugliest side effect, so the priority #1 is avoid it by setting the right shutter speed. Once this is understood and mastered, go to Manual mode + auto IsO.
    ps: auto iso is the greatest feature of the digital camera era.

    Never used P mode, I'd rather stick pins in my eyes. For event photography where light changes constantly nothing beats manual camera mode combined with TTL flash. Get your ambient exposure right first then let TTL sort out the flash. Use flash compensation to dial up or down the power output, it couldn't be easier in my opinion. 😉
