Does anyone know why this tune celebrates Martindale, Butterfield and Morell, 3 Union officers whose service can best be described as adequate to mediocre? I did some digging and it appears all 3 were senior commanders of the V Corps of the Potomac army through 1862, so is it possible this was a song written by soldiers of the V Corps?
Probably because it's a propaganda song written early in the war, before the more famous and better generals like Grant and Sherman took command. Remember people in 1862 didn't know those generals were mediocre yet.
