Geoff Bullock speaks out for the first time about Hillsong and Brian Houston

  • This is about as big as Hillsong exposé stories get.
Geoff Bullock was one of the original pastors of Hillsong with Brian Houston and he's the one who invented the name Hillsong and wrote the songs that made the whole church sing!
He is the pioneer and author of Hillsong's music legacy.
Geoff left Hillsong in 1995, quietly, with no fuss. But that was not to be, according to the leaders.
He's never spoken on TV until now. As usual, the Houstons cried 'Satanic attack!', re-wrote the church's history like Bullock never existed and heavied other churches never to sing his music again.
Today Geoff spoke and it's devastating for him personally and for everyone who's ever sung a Hillsong song. But also regarding what Hillsong's leader Brian Houston knew about his father's sex offences. And when. We commend Geoff for his bravery in speaking out now, and to journalist Rich McHugh for sharing the story.

Dear Geoff - you and I met during the Sydney Olympic games and I interviewed you on Captian Cook ship. I am sad to hear what you are going through. You have been a great inspiration to me and many in the body of Christ and your music has and still is a blessing to many millions. You always showed a deep commitment to Christ and you demonstarted it by the way you served others. I pray you find peace and reconciliation in what you are going through. I hope and pray you will rediscover the love the Lord has for you. Bless you mate, those who love you will all continue to pray for you. Alan

As the former Australian National AOG photographer 1996-1997, and photographer for Hillsong albums ("Shout to the Lord" albums), Edge church, Youth Alive, Planet Shakers, I can attest to this testimony about putting the institution, brand, and the business ABOVE that of the Gospel and people.
That said, many churches are guilty of putting their brand, ministry, and territory ABOVE servanthood to the Lord, be it traditional or evangelical.
We are all guilty and can only be saved and redeemed by Jesus.

THANK YOU, GEOFF, not only for the music but also for the courage you are now showing. Completely understand the hold of both manipulated guilt and fear they held over you which kept you silent. That is there m.o. and they've used it time and again to subdue. It is sounding like Scientology in the way it intimidates those who question them. What is so worrying is the number of people who are still being led by the nose. Totally agree also with the fact that non-disclosure agreements are completely unbiblical - they obviously don't believe that the truth sets us free. I honestly feel for you - it's a travesty that these circumstances have robbed you of your strength of faith, traumatized you and lessened the quality of your life. As it did to the other victims. But I know that nothing will separate you from the love of God - He has His hand upon your life. I hope you can find some sort of closure and move on, when his court case is finally over. Thank you also for being a champion on behalf of the decades of victims.

I agree about Hillsong but some of Geoff's trauma and anxiety and leaving Christianity can also be linked to leaving his wife and 5 children for a woman in the church, We are all broken people but we can't just construct one person as totally innocent. I am no admirer of Brian Houston at all but it is hypocritical of the media to lambast him for dalliances with women and not even bring up the subject of adultery with Geoff Bullock. The only one we can trust completely is Jesus, Praying that both of these men will find forgiveness and peace through Christ.

Not to defend any infidelity, but certain people preached hard on righteousness while Geoff was predominantly playing the piano, while yes, benefiting from the family image, agreed.

From his eyes I saw sadness, in every church there must be a servant of God who no longer serves God but so that people can see that he is great at serving. I believe this is the Lord Jesus' way for him to leave Hillsong because now it has become apparent how tragic the Hillsong mega church is... There are too many negative things, Hillsong's songs are not praising God anymore, they are just in the mouth, sorry, I'm not judging. It's better to hear old gospel songs i believe it really comes from the holy spirit, so every time you want praise and worship ask Lord Jesus what is to please King Jesus. Praise Jesus & Jesus bless you all

It's an interesting report, that leaves many questions unanswered. Especially to those who have not followed what Geoff Bullock's journey has been. Why the journalist didn't ask - what was the specific nature of your departure from Hillsong, and why was he so terrified of Houston that he waited 27 years to speak about it? Just what exactly did he fear?

Well, I mean, they should have been asked, but you have to be pretty dense if you don't already know the answers to these questions. More likely, you are asking them in bad faith as a defense of hillsong.
With that said, Ill answer them for you.
      1. It was a toxic work environment, and Houston was a bully.
      2. Hillsong is an extremely powerful organization that is capable of causing great harm torwards people who spoke out. If they are going to do things such as protecting a pedophile (which, by the way, Brian covering for his father has been public record much further back than 2019 even though 2019 was when the media really started talking about it), then they definitely would have destroyed a former employee who spoke out against them.
      3. He's speaking out now because Hillsong has lost its power and its reputation has been destroyed, so he does not have to fear retaliatioin like he has the last 27 years.
I refer you to the I was a teenage fundamentalist podcast in which Geoff talks about this more in detail.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Brian Houston never covered up his Fathers errors, as bad as they were.
    I remember Brian again standing
& repenting on his Fathers behalf, long after Frank Houston died.
The question is why is this still being brought up?
It was known in NZ years back of Frank Houston.
There's nothing worse when the church rises up against one another & broadcasts to the world. These things should stay in the church.
The saying- Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
Geoff Bullock wrote beautiful songs & I still enjoy them to this day.
What he committed with another woman is none of our business, it's God's! Just as everything with the Houston's is.
However, Geoff should be the last person to point the finger.
Gossip & Slander is rife in the church & God is intolerable with it. As for the criminal charges against Brian Houston for the sin his father committed seems outrageous to me.
It seems they're out to crucify Brian.
All I can say is God has/sees it all. Nothing goes unnoticed before a merciful God.
Anything Brian has concealed with the activities in the church, he has to answer to God.
Meanwhile I choose to show mercy to him, Geoff Bullock & all those who have failed God.
Repentance is the result of one who knows they have deliberately sinned against God & when it comes from a heart that is broken before God. There is nothing God cannot forgive, unless it is denying who The Holy Spirit is. Because He is God Himself.
It saddens my heart on reading how the Body of Christ in many places is pointing the finger @ each other. I was taught, if one is not happy in a fellowship, just leave, say nothing, but give it all to The Lord.

Unfortunetly i cant see or hear much of Jesus or the Father in any of the different churches on the rare occasion i attend. It seems to be all about the programs and the ministries and the sin and even hell. I no longer believe the doctrine i adhered to for 20 years which mostly comprised of legalism, performance, self righteousness and sin conciousness. I dislike the fakeness that i see and i feel sorry for those caught up in it. It was never meant to be like this. Im so thankful my eyes were opened and i stopped being a pharisee. There is nothing new in what Geoff has said in this video that I haven't said on my blog-site many times over the past eleven years. The homosexual affair between Peter Laughton and Pastor Frank Houston wont help Brian's prosecution. The gay conversion therapy angle is untrue. Yes, Peter was looking for father-love and Frank was looking for who knows what. Both were over the age of consent which was 18 back then. And Frank died 18 years ago. A dead person can't be prosecuted even if what he did to Peter was wrong as a pastor.

There is forgiveness, so go back to your faith, ask God for forgiveness, God has his arms opened to you, look at Christ, not at people, parmstors, leaders. God teaches you to look at Him, not at people. Hillsong or other church, where is your faith? Is it people or is it God? Food for thought!

As a singer I did get to meet some great human beings, one of them Chris Falson who's kind words and gentle smile in times of crisis mean the world to me,he was almost like a big brother ready to catch if needed (not that we spoke much, just during rehearsals for conferences etc) but the atmosphere became artificial and cold, it was all about performance for the cameras no longer about worship & its members once I left all the "friends" I had never tried to contact me to see why I had suddenly left without a goodbye,to them I know longer existed I have one person I am still friends with who excepts that I am no longer a believer in the christian religion & follow the belief of my Native American ancestors.

The first time I ever heard Brian Houston preach I felt an instant dislike for the man. Now I’ve been in churches for over 60 years and I’ve seen and heard a good number of preachers in my time. Some have had some things to say from the Bible that have made me very uncomfortable, even ashamed, but that was for my good and I never felt any dislike towards such men.
Brian Houston was different because he wouldn’t preach things that challenged me at all, preferring to preach ‘NICE’ things, but his words made my skin crawl, honestly. He seemed like a seductive salesman who wants to reel in a buyer. I wasn’t sure what it was about the man, but he just didn’t come across as genuine in anything he said.

First of all, I am not against mega churches, the these are potential pitfalls that I have seen. One… Character issues Too… Lack of accountability three… Lack of deep preaching/teaching of the word of God for… Only preaching certain types of messages like healing or prosperity to the neglect of messages for example on holiness and simplicity five… Trying to keep a certain brand trying to be cool and hip rather than submitted to the purpose of God and fulfilling the great commission… These are just a few. This celebrity mindset and desire to be popular and successful… The coolest church on the block… The hippest music… Etc. Fear of man more than fear of God… I certainly pray for all parties involved❤

I remember Geoff, from Hills Christian Life Centre in 1988 when I became a Christian. Seeing and hearing him now breaks my heart, because I know how he feels… I was hurt too Geoff. I was raped, impregnated with twins, slandered like I was guilty of rape or adulterous behaviour, my twin babies and my first son were stolen illegally, my housing undermined and I was thrown out on the street. Before going to Hillsong I was a 25 yr old registered nurse in the process of buying my first home. Never before been on the street, but within the first year of being a Christian, I was homeless and childless. Told I wasn’t welcome back at that church or any other church, no matter the religion. That, was enforced, I tried other churches and each one told me to leave and not come back, my son also. I could go on, but I don’t think I need to. I only wanted to say enough that it be known, I was a victim and was hurt real bad. It’s over 30 years later and I’ve only just, in these last 3 years, connected back with the church in fellowship. It didn’t come easily either, I just kept on trying, knocking, emailing, calling, making endless TH-cam accounts to speak in church chat, getting blocked every time just saying “Hi Church”.
It was cruel and I was evil, but it was people, so few people, only 3 or 4 who personally hurt and tried to destroy me. No one else did. It wasn’t God and wasn’t done by “the church”, or with the congregations knowledge of it, or even in sight of them. It was as evil is, and done in secrete, every bit of it. Even now, those who did take part are still there. So, as you see, I have reason to be angry at Hillsong, if I choose. Believe me anger is right there waiting for me to pick it up again, if I want it. I don’t though, I really don’t. I forgive and I keep forgiving those who hurt me, because if I don’t, I become angry again and that feels terrible. Its not me being spiritual and trying to show you how to he holier with a lesson on forgiveness. No, it’s about feeling good or feeling bad. It really isn’t nice feeling angry or any negative feeling against one another, it sounds stupid saying that, but I need to explain how it’s not something that’s deep and spiritual and hard to understand. It’s so basic. I feel good when I care. I feel good being kind. I feel good when I’m not angry. When I don’t forgive I become angry, whether it be a little or a lot, it all feels bad. When I’m not thinking about the things that make me angry, the wrongs done to me, the wrongs I’ve found out about that potentially could hurt me, etc etc, I feel so much better than when I’m thinking or talking about them. So I prefer to forgive, because I like to feel good. I can’t forgive my enemies, from the motive of loving them, only the Father is love like that. What I can do however, is forgive them with the motive of loving God and myself. I forgive because my life is better when I do, instantly. It’s not for the ones we’re forgiving, it’s for us. It’s like taking pain away and putting back joy. It’s a choice and no one can do it but us. No matter how many know of the offence, the pain still stays. No matter if it’s told on every media outlet on earth, it will still hurt and make a place for anger to live. This doesn’t heal us. Jesus does and He does it through us choosing to forgive. We grow, we become better people, stronger, happier people, healing.
I promise I’m finished. 🤭 sorry, Brief is hard for me to do…

None of these people seem to have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. They need to get off TV and ponder/pray about the condition of their own private lives, hearts and eternal destination. As for Brian Houston - the Lord Himself is now trying to bring him to a place of true repentance becos he is surrounded by yes men who do not dare to bring discipline and correction into his life. Unfortunately for Brian, things are going to continue to get worse until he learns what it means to be a true servant of God.

see my comment above ! there is a big difference about knowing about an allegation and an event. When you are in a church Christ told us we would be hated and there is not a day goes by without being accused of something.

@@markj.ashwin4830 you are right in saying it wasn’t a criminal matter but it was certainly a biblical matter. If Frank wasn’t voluntarily stepping down immediately once this was exposed, he needed to be stood down and removed from salaried employment. I honestly don’t understand how, if he feared God, he could continue to stand behind the pulpit. The whole situation is tragic and just adds to the damage and extent of the worlds disappointment in Christian leaders and ‘ministries’.

I do think that this thing with Brian and his responsibility as far as his father, he was underage himself at the time. It was put to him to correct this and he was not qualified.
Now we know Brian wasn’t good in a leadership roll but that is an aside from the criminal charges.
I feel for the Hillsong Brothers and Sisters. I’ve been praying for them.
Praying for those who are backsliders as well.
Shalom grace and Godspeed Saints. In Jesus name. Stay humble. All glory belongs to God alone!
