    Jeez, California. Half the "students" and crowd are chatting, not listening, letting their dogs whine and bark and will go home after the day and complain to everybody they didn't learn about how to control a horse. I hope Pat is being paid well for enduring the ignorance he is facing. Pat, you are a very patient man... and not just with horses.

    I love watching Pat work. Whether it’s with his own horses or when he’s never met before. It’s fascinating to me to watch the difference in the horses behavior between handlers/people. You can really see how precise his timing is and how he really understands horses and how to read/interpret their body language, which allows him to respond quickly/appropriately and precisely at the right time. This kind of information is invaluable. We are so fortunate that he shares with us and that Deb is a good sport about having to learn how to excel at cinematography! Lol
    Thanks Deb! And, of course, Pat, THANK YOU!

    These clinic lessons are great to see because we can see more easily the mistakes we all make and how to address fixing it for the horse. Especially like the teaching of the hand positions on the reins, when they should be up high and when down low for the jobs you're trying to do and considering the type of bite one is using.

My only suggestion would be to get your whining dog out of the video. I couldn't hear through mine whining back. Had to move my dog out of the room. LOL

    What a bunch of nice looking horses with their nice looking peoples! Something about the smokey atmosphere really brings out the colors of the horses. It is so nice to see their (the humans) inexperience (and willingness to learn) against Pat's masterful timing and understanding of the horse, it really helps to deepen my understanding, thank you so much Pat for sharing your wisdom and knowledge, it's beautiful to watch. Watching the gal with the black horse do the side pass, it is like watching a transference of energy from her to the horse, awesome!

    I am a very very green horse person who just got his first horse at 51yo and it is a well mannered 2 year old Percheron he has been leg trained so i am having to learn all this as i go. these videos are a huge help. I am looking forward to long working relationship with my horse

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t know what leg trained is but it’s always tricky when a green rider tries to learn on a young horse no matter how well mannered. Young horses need confident, experienced riders. I hope you have a very good support group and riding instructor to keep you both on the right path.

      @@PatnDebPuckett Just not neck reigned is what i was referring to. I have not found a trainer yet and am just working on ground work and basics with him for now. When i started taking lessons before all the horses i rode were neck reigned so is has been a bit of an adjustment learning to use more seat and less reign. this is one of the reasons i love your videos because i can see and learn. i have purchased couple of your dvd to help me further and also one of your solid bits as he was trained on a twisted wire bit and i can tell it is too much for him especially with my newness to riding

    Omg so much good instruction here! I try to incorporate training with just riding through the fields so my progress is slow. Nevertheless my gelding has made so much progress with lateral movement and movement of front and hindquarters but this gives me more specific examples to work from. I will study this video many times!!

      The lady on the black horse entrusted us with finding an unstarted colt and putting the first 60 days on him. We have worked with her throughout the 7 year process but she is the one who put in the endless hours to make this horse what he is today.

    My arabian stallion learned how to cue me to sidepass instead of how to sidepass. As soon as I decided to humor him and do a sidepass he did a perfect sidepass right along with me. It was his first lesson so I guess that's pretty good. He's a very smart little guy even for an arabian.

    Hi, I love your video’s they have taught me so much! I have a question you may be able to help me with.. I bought a 14 yr old driftwood mare just a few months ago, I’m not sure if your familiar with the breed but people are telling me they are very low key minded. I’m finding her to be lazy. I do a lot of groundwork with her I don’t believe she’s had much of that so she’s learning what I’m asking for. She previously been ridden in English and I’m western but she’s adapting. I’ve heard you say you don’t lunge horses and make them run and run but she needs to build muscle and endurance so I’m having her do so. Although she fights it! Do you think I should I force her through it or not?

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Trot her outside on a loose rein. That is how you get her in shape and the basis of forward impulsion is the trot so you can kill two birds with one stone. We are very familiar with the Driftwood bloodline and English riding. Forcing an intelligent horse to run around in circles will only make her resentful.

    Trained mechanically I guess means with tie downs and not responding to the seat? Linda in OKC

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. It means the horse is moved mechanically by the rider through gimmicks like tie downs, martingales, etc, and a constant tension on the reins. In other words, the horse is not taught how to do the job on a feel.

    I was wrong, none of these horses are ready for a western bit, well one of them is. This is MHO. I have a problem with these people using the bit when they still can't ride. None of them can look in the direction they want to go. They all look at the horse's head. if your seat is still weak you don't need a bit.

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      We want our students to learn to ride with their bodies instead of their hands. Riding in a western bit helps this process and it’s milder and easier on the horse than a snaffle.
