BREAK or BRAKE? Ladies, gents and teddy bears; for those that DO NOT KNOW aviation terms, when an aircraft is in formation or on initial (approaching the runway on the first stage of approach) this turning away is called a BREAK. When an aircraft is in formation of 2, 3 or more (Red Arrows) and they peel away, this is BREAKING (The aircraft breaks away from formation) In this video Turbo is on initial (and inverted) and the when he turns, this ‘turn’ is called a BREAK or even more accurate a “Run and BREAK”. In aviation, a run and break is a procedure used by aircraft to join an airfield traffic pattern without requiring the aircraft to spend a long time flying at low speed. The pilot will fly the aircraft up and away from the runway in a tight crosswind leg, to position downwind in the pattern to land. This maneuver is performed at high-g which causes significant induced drag; this drag causes a rapid reduction of airspeed. During this the aircraft is configured to land. The aircraft arrives late downwind in the pattern at a safe low speed, configured to land, with minimum time spent at lower speeds. Pilots, once on the BREAK will call to tower and you will hear “TURBO1, break, land”. Or you could hear another version “TURBO1, break into downwind”. At Lakenheath, those that see the aircraft enter the runway from “POINT CHARLIE” will enter and BREAK into DOWNWIND. Break in aviation is to break away or turning into the circuit. A BRAKE is on the landing gear, used when the aircraft touches down and the pilot will use the BRAKES. There is also aerodynamic braking too. And also a little bonus for you; when an aircraft has lined up and awaiting clearance for take off, the pilot is using the BRAKES. Pilots let go of the brakes on clearance.
I was a Aircraft Weapons Mechanic at RAF Lakenheath from '89-'93. I loved it. Worked the F-111F nearly the entire time I was there. Up until the last of the F111-F's left. Seeing as a Weapons Technician, we were not authorized to be certified on more than one aircraft, they made a special exception for my crew alone. We were the LAST weapons crew to work the F-111F. And the only weapons crew to be dual certified (as far as we knew). When we went to load barn, we had to train twice as much as everyone else. But it was worth it. Training F-111F and F-15E, on the same day. Was sweet.
That inverted flyover was absolutely dope. The tip toe landing was butter. When your flying skill is this caliber, your allowed to show off with a little fun and put a smile on everyone’s face. L O V E D I T ! ! ! Thanks Ted for your always stellar videos.
Wishing Flt Lt Turnbull all the best in his future endeavours, and will miss his excellent displays with the Typhoon Display Team. Can't wait to see whats coming, and hope it half as fun and exciting as watching that inverted break!

What a truly magnificent sound this jet makes, right after it inverted, beautiful! Reminds me of the Hawker Hunter's odd blue note. To let such power shine in an elegant way requires skills, this is just great to watch!

Spectacular display, and nice camera work as always! Would you be okay with me featuring this in my series Weekly Dose of Aviation? Of course you will be credited both in the video and in the description as before. Cheers mate!
Oii oiii thank you very much. Of course and thanks again for asking but on one condition; please let people know that the correct spelling for this manoeuvre when the pilot turns into the circuit is BREAK lol. 😂 Thanks again
Hey Nikos. It's amazing how you capture these truly epic and magical moments on film. Thank you for your explanations, expertise and enthusiasm. You're just great Nikos. Thanks for sharing!! ❤❤🧸🧸

It is always a pleasure to watch Flt Lt Turnbull do his stuff. Wishing you all the best in your next role with the RAF Flt Lt Turnbull 2025 displays won't be the same without you. 🫡
Wow the skill/nerves to do this people won’t believe. I know as the two RAF Regiment Sgts who used to check low flying altitudes with a Rapier used to report to me flying a desk at Strike Command and often had videos of Tornadoes flying inverted past them. Word got round quick when they were spotted and crews rushed to join in! I was mainstream but rock apes rock!
I don’t know an awful lot about aircraft and can’t fully appreciate the skill level employed by the pilot or understand what is happening during the footage, which is impressive to those who are in the know.
@ Ha haha. I get it. I think it would have been beneficial to have seen the whole video and not missed the first 50 seconds. No wonder I struggled to see what all the fuss was about. Thanks for getting back to me, which is why I realised that I must have missed something. I’m sure you’ll agree that the remaining clip would give me reason to question the validity of title.
That landing imho was the most skilful part of the show. Not the slightest hint of a bounce at touchdown and holding the nose up (He cant see in front of him at all while he is doing it) so the aircraft acts as a windbreak and slows down quicker. Silky and precise :)
There is 4 aircraft that consistently makes my heart pound, my hair stand up in my back and my eye wet. That's the Spitfire, the Starfighter, the F-16 and the totally beautiful Eurofighter.🥹❤ Don't know why they just stand above all the others like gigants of excellence.😍
I am spoiled having watched this at five meters off the deck down the entire runway at Lakenheath, but that was 66’. True, inverted five meters down the runway length. Wonder if anyone filmed the day…
I wish they would come to Plymouth we never get fast jet displays apart from the Arrows occasionally, we used to have proper air shows probably because in those day the RAF had Mount Batten still although it was and ASR and survival school, Even our armed forces days displays are nearly all civilian aircraft and maybe a Wildcat and Merlin , Chinook fly over or into the citadel regularly but not seen typhoon or F35 here
Oii oiii It sure was. Although a wheelie to us, it is actually called Aerodynamic Braking. It is very common and the purpose is to relive stress to the brakes by using the undercarriage to create drag and therefore slowing the aircraft down without the stress on the breaks
Oii Oii Robert thank you very much and a good question too. This is called ‘aerodynamic braking’ and it is a very common type of braking when landing. It’s of course like a wheelie but the purpose of it is to take the strain off the brakes. With the aircraft having the nose up like this exposes the whole undercarriage, which creates drag and slows the aircraft down, without using the brakes. It’s like opening up your jacket in high winds and making a parachute in some ways.
"THIS IS HOW YOU BREAK TO LAND!" and "did we......expect him to run in with a standard break? Of course not!" Exactly. I understand your video title as commenting on the excitement this type of flying can cause for those watching, but from an educational point of view it needs to be understood that this is absolutely not SOP for "how you break to land".
@ What still haunts. We lost an aircraft and crew during LABS training in Libya ( RAF Idris) and kept a loaded aircraft on runway, with 24hr crew, when back in UK. Chilling times, which were generally ignored in public attention.

Basically you don’t see this all the time. A normal break to land is NOT inverted with a few barrel rolls

Amazing!
Break or brake? I don't exactly know the meaning of this, but it looks pretty cool!
Break is when you “break” away from formation or from initial. Brake is when you use the brakes on the gear to slow you down or stop on the runway

Was this coming home from LFA7.?
Oii Oii negative, this just finished a practice display
I've watched many videos of Typhoons and tbh I don't think until now seen one where they deploy the air brake.
If your inverted, you can also see the runway better....lol
I saw that plane in Sweden this summer :) ... Unless you have more with that D-Day livery?

aerobraking
Aerobraking saves using the actual brakes, which can get worn and hot.

Oh okay...holds the nose up until stall horn. Wonder why...extend the life of the front gear I suppose.
The “wheelie” is called Aerodynamic Braking. The Break to land was running in and the sharp turn into downwind
Wish we had proper aircraft carriers to fly the birds off. With their thrust to weight ratio they would have potent against adversaries.
