    Thanks! Good information. We've been traveling in Europe for 5 weeks and every hotel or apartment host has needed to photograph our passports in order to send the information to the appropriate people. I'm sure the authorities know EXACTLY where we are, where we've been, and for how long! 🙃

    We really enjoyed your discussion of Schengen in this video. Tanya and I are currently planning our adventures for the next 12 months and they include visits to several Schengen zone countries. To make this all work we've included several non-Schengen zone countries so we don't run up against the 90 day in 180 day limit. So, we've included Romania, Serbia and North Macedonia in our plans as well as UK and Northern Ireland. We've also used a Schengen calculator app for several years that is incredibly helpful. (Although I understand Carrie, the app, works well for you two.) Thanks for the video.

      Sounds like you have a wonderful plan in place! Having to be out of the Schengen zone, forced us to open our eyes to areas we may not have looked to travel for quite a long time. Brian does like the "Carrie app" as it seems to work without much effort 😂. The calculator is a mind saver, I love anything that does the calculations for me, especially when you are entering and exiting many times. Thanks so much for watching - Cheers 🍻

      just curious....US citizen here. does a US cititizen have to return to US after the 180 days or just travel to non-schengen country for 90 days in order to return to schengen country for another 90 days? So for example - you (Jay and Tanya) ....are in Spain for 90 days, then you go to Romania for 2 weeks but you want to return to Spain for another 90 days....is 2 weeks in romania enough or do you have to stay away from schengen area for a full 90 days? Then, you want to travel around Europe for another 6 months. What do you have to do?

      Another tip is to always have the passport with you. It's the only valid ID you will have when you go abroad. In Schengen are there 2 IDs that work and that is passport and national ID if you are part of Schengen

    Great video, as always! I do plan to try using the bilat agreement someday for Poland. I heard that one is pretty successful for US passport holders. I have the agreement printed out already, BUT I was just approved for a one year visitor visa for France. Extremely fast and easy to get if that might interest you. So I will spend almost 90 days in Portugal then head to France. That visa does allow you to come and go as often as you want, but once outside of France you are subject to Schengen rules. The calculator will come in VERY handy!

      Straight from the ETIAS FAQ: remain in the international transit area. However, you must have a valid travel authorisation if you leave this area and enter the territory of any of the European countries requiring ETIAS.
      Just be aware that you don't book a ticket where you have to self transfer because the airline will likely reject you, or you might be unable to check-in your luggage on transfer.

    • @ye6207
      @ye6207 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That said, this exception does not apply for most other authorisation systems such as ESTA and ETA. I don't know why, it doesnt make any sense as you're not really entering the country.

    Great video thank you so much. You are both very knowledgeable. Indulge me in running this scenario past you… I am an Australian who will be travelling to Germany in June. I intend to stay in Germany for up to 180 days while I study German language. The German Consulate website for Australia says Australians can remain in Germany for 90 days but must then exit Schengen… and can then reenter Germany on the same day for a further 90 days. So my question is this - should I book my return flight within 180 days of my arriving flight? Or do you think Frankfurt airport immigration won’t be too concerned when I arrive? Thanks so much

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think I would concern myself with a flight as we've never been asked for a return ticket when entering the Schengen. As far as extension, I would just be sure you get stamped and handle this at the 90 day point so you are sure they have your extension documented.

    Yes, it's true! When I went to Miami almost 4 years ago I had to ask for a visa for the United States, it's called ESTA and I paid 14 dollars and Is valido for two years but this was because Italy, the country where I came from, was in the Visa Waiver program so there was a need for 'Esta , otherwise if I came from Romania there was a need for a real one since it was much more difficult to obtain and also cost much more (160 dollars)! By the way, I'm Romanian but I've been living in Italy for almost 24 years and I have dual citizenship (Romanian and Italian) so I used my Italian passport to apply for the ESTA!

    Brilliant video on the range of issues. We did a lot of research a few years ago including bilateral agreements for us in Australia potentially spending an extended period in Europe. It is technically possible to use the standard 90 days PLUS bilateral agreements to stay for a year but the bilateral rules are different for each country and not all countries have them for Australia. But - in summary - your video is 100% accurate and helpful / practical. My only “gripe” is the 90 day Schengen rules started when there were only about 6 countries involved and now, with 27 countries, it is a bit short. 180 days in 360 would be better but wishful thinking I guess.

    I am 79, do you know of an insurance company that will cover travelers my age for long term residence in Europe? I am planning a one year stay in Spain in Spring 2024. FYI for short term travel up to 90 days my Chase Sapphire Reserve CC covers all possible reasons and it is included in the CC annual fee ! • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They do all add up, that is for sure. We typically set out Airbnb budget first, and after that is arranged we then know what remainder we have to deal with for the rest of the month. We then can adjust our daytrips, eating out, etc. to fit accordingly. We also have a separate yearly budget for flights as well. It's not a quick, hey let's travel there desicion. There is so much time that goes into the planning process prior to making a desicion to travel to a new location. Hope that helps.

    This is NOT a visa actually, it is a simple online entry requirement form for 7 euros, for visa exempt nationals such as US citizens. It takes just a few minutes and you get almost instant answers. MOST people especially US citizens should not worry about it when it takes place and they're saying now it will be 2025. They have been doing this to go to Mexico for years, but you typically fill out the form on the airplane and your hotel charges you the "tax". SO MANY posts and videos are confusing especially older people wanting to travel to the EU. The Schengen visa exemption for 90/180 days remains the same for US nationals.

    Excellent Video!
    I'm reaching out to you after reading your post "8 Consequences for Overstaying," seeking clarification regarding my travel situation to Europe and the potential legal implications.
    I was in Europe for the first time on July 19, 2023, traveling to Germany and Portugal, and returned to Brazil on December 15, 2023, staying as a tourist for more than 90 days (5 months). Both entry and exit records were made in Madrid, Spain, during layovers in my itinerary, without any issues.
    I have a trip planned to Italy with my brother on July 24, 2024, to recognize my Italian citizenship through an advisor. However, I am uncertain about my situation and concerned about being denied entry, despite having all the necessary documents.
    Considering that I will have spent 180 days in Brazil since my last stay in Europe, will I face any problems entering Italy? If so, what measures should I take to ensure entry? Is there anything I can do to regularize my situation?
    Thanks in advance!

    Nice video. I remember that entering/leaving the US, some agents didn't know about the procedure when you had a VISA in the US. So, sometimes I had the entry card still when leaving and got into trouble when coming back again and other times it was OK. Most important, ALWAYS BE NICE TO THE BORDER AGENT IN ANY COUNTRY. They have your "life" in their hand at that time, and if you piss them off, they send you back. AND NEVER OVERSTAY OR PLAY WITH THE TIME ALLOWED IN ANY COUNTRY. Always remember, you are a guest their and if they don't like you, you are gone.

And can you then repeat this again for the remaining six months of that year?

    There won't be any border agents involved in normal cases. ETIAS is dependent on the precursor EES (Entry /Exit System) that will come into effect about 6 months ahead of it (end 20224 probably).
    There won't be any passport stamps anymore either. The whole thing will be automated and involve on first visit the collection of fingerprints / biometric data.

    I've been traveling all throughout Europe for over a year within less than 2 years time. What I found to be very strange is that border control in Denmark, when returning to the US and entering back in through Copenhagen, does not scan your passport! So I've run into some very flustered agents looking through the stamps in my passport not knowing how to interpret my Schengen stay! They would have to enter all of my stamp dates themselves to figure out if I overstayed! Of course they don't take the lengthy time to do this. And, of course I'm *always* very careful to not overstay.
    All this is to say that apparently rules are being implemented for Schengen countries to agree to scan all passports and share a common database. This would alleviate the burden on passport agents to figure things out themselves. And maybe they will be able to say, "oh, I see you only have 4 more days that you could have stayed here! Good for you!" 😊

    You mentioned that they stamp your passport when your transder fligth in Rome for example. But I think in your origin or destination was within within Schengen. You have to go through border control whenever you enter or leave Schengen. It would mean that you've entered or exited the Schengen area in Rome and not in the airport of origin or destination. If you stay within the international side of the airport, you should be ok. Airports in Schengen countries are usually set up with an international airside and a Schengen airside with a border control in between.

    Great video as always. ETIAS is primarily going to be used to reduce over stayers, and with the electronic gates there will be no more sneaking in and out. It is listed that current penalties are a 1 year ban, followed by a multiyear ban and assorted fines. Those with all these old tricks will be sorry very soon. Often, such as covid, MANY countries manned the borders and stopped many for document checks. It is random and does happen, good luck.

    Great that Croatia has been added. Thanks for all of the updates. That's a place on the list that I haven't been able to get to, but friends and neighbors have been going for many years and love it. My neighbors were there in 2022 and also a couple months ago. Hopefully, I'll eventually get there.
    As for the cost of a visa to get into Turkey, it was also expensive when I went there in the late 1990s. I flew there from Paris, stayed in Istanbul for around 4 days, and then flew back to Paris. It was a great four days though. Have fun!
    I agree with not taking the risk of hopping back and forth across borders, into Morocco for example, and then returning back into the Schengen Zone to try to restart one's time.
    When I was spending summers in Europe, I would include the time when I was in either Tunisia or Morocco within however many days I could stay in Europe. I didn't use going to Tunisia or Morocco as a border hopping situation to restart time. I made sure that I was on a plane headed home before my legal time had run out.
    As for border hopping and returning back into a country, it's been common in Southeast Asia for decades. But, a bit over a decade ago, I think it was, Thailand got strict and a lot of people were stranded in border-hopping countries. It was a mess to say the least. Friends and I were keeping up with that news daily. Plus, here at home, I used to read the Bangkok Post. I also had Thai contacts in Bangkok sending me news. There were folks stuck in both Cambodia and Penang as some would fly to Penang to get their passport stamped and then go back to Thailand to re-enter. And a lot of people had been living in Thailand for many months and years, but on tourist-type visas.
    As for trying to overstay one's time in any country or region of the world, not a good idea. Trying to beat the system, could get you ending up in jail and/or deported.
    In Jan 2020, while back in Bangkok, I was on my way to the airport to fly onto Penang as I do at the end of three weeks in Bangkok. As the car that I was in was reaching the airport and traffic was slowing, I noticed a truck to the right of me with an open-air cage-like contraption on the back of it. Looking cramped up inside of the cage-like structure, was a blonde-haired man and woman who looked like they were in their 40s. The truck had two men driving them to the airport. I immediately thought that it was a deportation situation. I had never seen anything like that before in two decades of going to Thailand.

      100% agree - it's just better to play within the rules. The otherside of it and what could happen, just isn't worth it. As always, thank you so much for watching and your comments. Cheers 🍻

      Yep. Stick to the rules. I don't understand folks who play with the rules and in a foreign country situation as things can turn real ugly with foreign police. I've seen all kinds of stuff play out over the decades of travel.

    Looking forward to your visa video if you decide to do one. I’ve gotten a lot of conflicting information about how schengen works if you have a long term retirement/digital nomad visas in france/spain/estonia/etc. Although, even if these long term visas allowed me to travel schengen free, not sure I would as I think my global income would be taxed at europe’s high rates, not sure…

    • @BrianandCarrie

      When the time comes, we will do a video about our experience and how it works. We are not sure about what is allowed and what the limitations are. But from what we understand, if you get an extension in a Schengen country you can't leave that country. Getting a work visa may be different. We will obviously know more when the time comes. Thank you for watching!
      Cheers!!🍻

      We do know that. This video is about the Schengen and how it works. This is the 3rd comment you've now made on this video and I'm really not sure why it's so upsetting to you. Every comment, positive or negative, does help move our channel in a positive direction, so thank you for watching and commenting. Hopefully you can find peace and joy someday soon.

      We generally leave negative comments up. Very seldom will we delete or remove a viewer from the channel. The person I was responding to had commented on your post and several others. He was removed which automatically removes all their comments. So, my comment appeared to be addressing you, which it wasn't. Sorry about the confusion. 😁

    How about this. Im been working on a ship. I have a multiple entry schenhen visa valid for 3 years. I enter amsterdam and embark on my ship.. ive been going to different countries outside schengen zone. How would i compute the number of stays for that matter

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have a different kind of entry visa allowing beyond 90 days in 180 then that's a good question. You could Google to see if there is a similar Schengen calculator to use for your situation. Cheers!!
