The look is what won Katy the role. All the other actresses came in looking like frumpy housewives, & Katy knew from the get-go that Peg was no frumpy housewife. She was the hot chick in high school who still thought of herself as the hot chick and dressed accordingly. Love that about Peg and Katy’s insight.
7:27 "I Fear That If This Show Were Running Today, It'd Catch A Lot Of Flak From Feminists And Other Groups Trying To Get It Taken Off The Air" TBH with you, Britt, it caught that flak back when the show originally aired in the mid-80s. This one woman raised so much of a stink about this show, trying to get it canceled, that it made national headlines and people started tuning in to see what the fuss was about and caused the ratings to skyrocket and every season the show was renewed the production staff sent this woman a bouquet of flowers
Katey Sagal (Peg) went on to star in FX's critically acclaimed Sons Of Anarchy as Jemma Teller...the biggest villain of the show!! She is also a great singer and sings on some of the soundtracks on the show😊
Katie Sagal was a backup singer for Bette Midler and on a few albums for a couple of other acts... Hence, the open on "Respect." Also a joke, 'cause Al gives no respect.
The jokes are a lot better when you see them in context instead of little short clips. One thing that made the show so funny is that every character was a very exaggerated stereotype. All of them bad, but in different ways. Lots of ways for the characters to play off of each other and drive each other crazy. And as far as the politically correct cancel culture, there is a very simple solution to all of that. If you see something you don`t like, don`t watch it. How hard is that?
Katy Segal is also a fantastic singer who sang backup for Bette Midler and the Rolling Stones. She even did a few solo albums; check out her song "Can't Hurry the Harvest"
Everyone that is saying that this show couldn't air today, forgot that the show actually got a lot of flack at the time. Even Ed O'Neil and Katey Segal didn't want to do some of the jokes because they seemed unnecessarily mean. When they asked the writers to tone down a few jokes, the writers told them no.
This was the Fox networks, first major show along with the Simpsons. It was very much about shock to get viewers. Katey Sagal (Peg Bundy) has said in interviews, they were soo mean to each other, she knew there was something Hot really go on there between them. Amazing characters.
The dynamic of the Bundys changed after season 1. The first season they actually liked each other. It was an US AGAINST THE WORLD mentality. After that, they wrote it as if they hated each other. And it was Phil Donahue.
lol well in reality they didnt hate each other, simply that they were both unhappy with how their lives turned out since their High School days. taking that unhappiness they traded blows, when they both were happy, they showed a totally different attitude.
I was a kid watching this show and my mom said she felt like a bad mom for letting me watch it. She also took some time to tell me about what absolute talents Katey Sagal (Peggy) and Christina Applegate (Kelly) were. I learned that lesson. The jokes are crass and I find them funny, but these two performers have been best-in-class. They're funny as hell. They sing. They dance. They've since had fantastic dramatic roles. I still love Married With Children, but I can see the genuine talent in a crass comedy.
The actress for example voiced Leela in futurama, played Penny's mom in Big Bang Theory, she was also in Shameless, Lost and Sons of Anarchy. Probably the second most successful actress on the show IMO.
Phil ran 29 years total. Oprah did her show 25 years, I think in part to not overtake him. He was her inspiration to start her show. As a kid, I didn't think I'd ever like anyone as much as Phil until I saw Oprah. Lol :)
Re Elvis, yes he was dead by this time, but lots of fans flatly refused to accept it and all sorts of conspiracy theories about him faking his death did the rounds, followed by people claiming to have seen/met him is all sorts of unlikely places. Remember that throw-away line in Men In Black: "Elvis isn't dead son, he just went home"? Peggy was implying that the girls' gym teacher was a predatory lesbian, and by saying that the teacher really would get her off a detention, Kelly was implying that she already knew that, because she'd already done that deal at least once before. You can imagine how that joke would fly today....
You really want to see (Peggy) act , watch her in The Sons Of Anarchy. She belongs to a motorcycle gang . This series and Katey Sagal was amazing, I promise you.
I always thought she was a great actress just by playing Peggy. Some people disregard comedy a lot but she had great timing and with people like her you could tell. I feel this compilation doesn´t really give her best moments in the show.
Funny thing about Kelly (the daughter): Every season she got progressively dumber, but once in a blue moon. completely out of left field, she'd say something you'd expect to hear out of someone with PhD-level intellect.
My sister once accidentally wrote my birth year down as 1776. And once at an event a couple years ago my dad remarked that 1858 was a good year. I responded with "you should know, that's the year you graduated high school." We can joke like that though, dad laughed so hard 😂😂 I have been at my work location since 2009, I told someone who asked me how long I've been there, I told them "since the stone age"
Sons of Anarchy. Great show. She plays an amazing character. As soon as i saw her in the show all I could see was Peg Bundy, but after about 5 minutes it was clear she was all Jemma.
22:20 To everyone incorrectly explaining bon-bons as chocolate covered candies: while that is the origin of the name, that is NOT what Peg eats in the show. What Peg liked were the chocolate-covered bites of ice cream sold in grocery stores. The real product from Nestlé was called BonBons, though the genericized version in the show was spelled Bon-Bons. But this is why she took them out of the freezer, and why she is eating them out of a round cup. The ice cream BonBons came in a round paper cup, like ice cream. Bonbon candies are generally sold in trays (like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates).
The Phil Donahue show made it on a Married With Children episode once. In that episode Al Bundy and his group called NO MA'AM took over the Phil Donahue show, tied up Phil Donahue onto a chair and hung a sign around his neck. The caption on the sign was an arrow pointed up at Phil Donahue's face and it said "OVULATES". Lol =)
Throughout the 80s there were a lot of people who thought Elvis was still alive. Those cheap newspaper magazines near cash registers at grovery stores would have stories of Elvis sightings and such, along with lead stories like "my wife had an Alien baby" with a foto of fanged pointy eared child on it. Ah those were the days. We (family) actually bought one a couple of times for laughs when I was in school.
@@Tony1771-yj8mc When an entire comment talks about it in the past tense only, with phrases alluding to the past only, it’s completely reasonable to understand the writer as believing it does not exist in the present day. The “ah those were the days” makes it very clear you did not mean today.

No, they were not candy. The Bon Bons she liked were these bite-size chocolate-covered balls of ice cream. I haven’t seen them in a store in yeeeears, so I suspect they have been discontinued.
Watch the whole series. It's 11 years of hilarious content worth the time. You get to watch the Bundy kid actors grow up from start to finish. Bonbons are chocolate candies, that Peggy is always eating on the couch while watching Oprah. Katey Sagal is more recently known for voicing Lela in Futurama, and she's one of those women that got hotter over time. Also, Al is based on O'Neill's uncle, who was a cop.

Katie Sagal still does Leela on Futurama previously was the mother on Sons of Anarchy. She has range, I HATED her in Sons but of course like Peggy Bundy and still love Lella.
Feminists did go after the show, when it came out. That’s why the writers went even harder. And they hired overweight, female comedians that actually wrote many of the jokes that you reacted to the last time you watched Al Bundy
The writers of Peg's dialog were prescient with the "You might lose you job and have learn to be a woman" line it's scary. The world today is filled wall to wall with Boss Bit-- who are so masculine they just turn men off and will end up 45 years old and alone with all their money and no eggs left.
What will really freak you out is Ed O'Neill had to be *begged* by the show creators to take the role. He wanted to do dramatic work instead. Also, the show creators started as writers on The Jeffersons in the 1970s, which was where I first heard "Oreo" as a derogatory term.
😆Today could not make this show because of cancel culture, in contrast when it premiered conservative church groups wanted the show banned. Your reactions are so fun to watch! Katie Sagal is very talented and a talented family; her sisters Jean and Liz (identical twins) also had a brief tv show in the 80s, Double Trouble.
she is talking about Phil Donahue, one of the first TV talk show host to include a live studio audience.
Not just the live studio audience, he'd also included taking questions to the guests from the audience and the audience phone-in questions
And Phil kept it classy, unlike other talk shows (Jer-ry! Jer-ry! Jer-ry!) which shall remain nameless.😋
Married to Marlow Thomas.
@@aspiedraw Morton Downey was the best, great instigator I recall

it does still come on..... I saw it on a local over the air channel last week. Channel named Cozi...
They sent her that basket arrangement several years in a row, until the show ended I think, as a thank you... lol
Anything can still air today, South Park proves that. People are just gutless these days.

ALSO Leela on Futurama!
I remember during commercial break of MWC in 1991 of a tv ad of Katey Segal’s album.
How is good ole Abe anyway?😂
Peggy is not a housewife, she is just a wife that doesn't leave the house. 😂
THat's the most accurate description I've seen of her yet. :)

I have always been a peggy bundy fan. I've always hated wearing animal print myself. But when people can pull it off its magnificent .
Peggy's best moment was the Home economics episode, when she helps her daughter do the final exam.
