- Found this footage from the Summer where I participated in Obon celebrations at my friend's house. Obon is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of your ancestors.

This is so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. *hides from embarrassment*
Oh I will look for those stories! Thank you! ^^
This was such a cool video! I bet the ceremony was beautiful
Gotta love some cultural similarities between this and day of the dead in mexico :)
I've been here for about 2 years this time, around 4 in total. Tsuyu is a salty soup base, kind of like a really light soy sauce ^^ We went to the cemetery to pick up the spirits of my friends ancestors and bring them back to the home :)
I watched this like 7 times and I say its one of the most beautiful things I have seen on TH-cam so far. Thank you for sharing.
Definitely, love it! :):)
They're the family of one of my students :)
Came from Sharla's Vlogmas 2019 , and what a beautiful tradition kinda similar to dia de muertos (day of the dead) in Mexico.
Haha that's so funny you ask, because I was at my friend's house helping her put some food on her family altar the other day and I asked her. She said they leave it there for a few hours and then eat it later so it doesn't go to waste :)
even though it wasn't summer there. This video has a very nostalgiac, summery feel to it. Such a pleasure to watch! Great upload
Yes, I think they are very similar!! I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) :)
Glad you enjoyed it!!! :):):)
The music goes so well with the video! So amazing :))
Thank you so much for sharing. There is so much there to see I had watch a few times.
Also thanks for the links to help learn about Obon. Very beautiful home and garden. Glad to know you have such a good friend. I know you'll do well with your classes. :)
This is similar to the Day of the Dead in Mexico and its celebrated in California too in some communities. I have seen the same with tables with their family and Ancestors photos or an item and food placed on the table they were masks of painted skulls I never asked much since I am half Mescalero Apache and Irish and give total respect to the dead. But they do talk about the people and celebrate their life on earth. Thank you for sharing this video.
Awesome seeing this from such a close, personal perspective.
Ahhh! I can't wait until I can finally visit Japan! Looks like a really interesting festival.
Yeah you might be right. This was in the countryside in Chiba, Summer 2012 :)
awesome!!! i love the Japanese traditions
It's been a long time! Well made, and, as for me, I enjoyed it ;)
Thank you so much!!^^
This is such a beautiful and healthy way to deal with the memory and "spirit" of lost loved ones. :)
Omg this amazing! I want to move to Japan! :3
this was awesome thanks for sharing it. i love the culture in japan lots of respect for everything. also the fact that their is like a Kami for everything. have you been to the sea of trees? any awsome to see you upload a new video hope you continue enjoying your life their. im excited i get to go their soon im being stationed at on of the us bases their in 2 months.
This video is so beautiful, Sharla !
Wow sounds nuts, take it easy when you can! I love seeing your videos, especially ones about the cultural events and stuff. GUH I want to go to Japan so badly.
best video youve ever made! so beautiful
Awesome! Thanks for posting this!
Oh wow you guys had watermelon!?! That's incredibly expensive in Japan isn't it? That was one of the coolest things I've ever seen though, eating noodles out of that trough that sends them around the garden. So cool!
Why so expensive here in the USA I don't see the problem unless your poor well I guess we are all different in way cause I mean like a 100 yen is like 3 dollars here isn't it
『Festival of the Dead 』
I'm not sure, I don't know too much about China but I do know that this is a specifically Japanese way of celebrating this holiday. But they may have something similar in other countries :)
I'm glad you enjoyed the video ^^ I'm not going back to Canada :)
You had a precious experience! last year I went to 4/20 festival in Vancouver. That was exciting :)
This is awesome. Learning about other people's traditions must be exciting.
Thanks for sharing this... It's wonderfull!
Thank you for sharing the experience! :)
ME!!! EVERYTIME I WATCH THAT CLIP AAAGGHHHHH
Beautiful video. Your so lucky to have experience it!
Yeah, very similar from what I have heard!
Your videos always makes me hungry with showing so much yummy food!
Also love the choice in background music!
i miss Japan.
I agree!! :)
Can't wait till obon!!
Such an interesting festival
Great video! I like how it doesn't have alcohol consumption or profanity; we can show the video to our kids here in American schools. Thanks!
For some reason I was watching this singing always by Bon Jovi... Strange... I really enjoy your videos! Keep em coming :D
Wow it's really, really beautiful, thank you.
After an ancestral soul rides on the horse of a cucumber, comes in a hurry and passes together with itself at the time of a summer near in autumn, it rides on the cow of an eggplant, and it returns slowly and goes.
I think that they are good customs.
Going to the graves of my ancestors, and Watching ALL JAPAN HIGHSCHOOL BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP onTV cheering my local team.
In Obon season, our ancestors come back to each family.
and we have to cereblate them.
In Obon season goes over, We feel this summer gone.
Children feel, homework should be done quick & completely till
the end of summer vacation.
AW wow thank you :)
There is also the Celtic Samhain, which modern day Halloween came from!
Well done!!! Obon-Greetings from Sweden! 2021, August 15.
It all looks so delicious!
Haha I know right, wish I had some!!
wow the lanterns r really cool.
Wow those noodles looked really good! Something about having to catch them makes them seem even more tantalizing. XD
this is like a tradition we got in mexico called "dia de los muertos" and instead of putting fruit we put candy and oranges, bread and flowers(instead of the lamps) aldo we sprnd the whole day in the cementary w/our family.
Cool. Nice preying mantis shot...but you should have put some spooky music for the cemetery scene. lol
I hope that one day I can live in Japan and study there as you do now! Soon I'm going to start to teach myself Japanese and try to take classes so I can one day live there too and experience new things and Japanese traditions like you! :)
Beautiful
Thanks for sharing your experience with us ^_^ How long have you been living in Japan?
Food looked really delicious~ Especially how you catch the noodle from the bamboo sticks, so fun haha! What's tsuyu by the way? Is it a bitter or sweet sauce?
Latterns look really pretty
owh love all ur videos n good luck with ur part time job n study! : D
it looks so peaceful ^ ^
Very cool! I had never heard of this festival before. When does it take place?
Nice documenting of Japanese religious tradition. Where was this footage taken and when? I mean I don't think Obon custum is maitained in such a pure form in urban areas such as Tokyo.
Sorry it's so late D; I'm taking 12 classes and working like 5 jobs or something this semester ^^;;;
have fun !!!!!!!!
I did enjoy
It would be cool if you could do a review of the happy meal toys in japan :)
Haha I am, a university student ^^ But I teach english part time.
can you do more videos on any other fun festivals in Japan?
great vid
obon is specifically a Japanese tradition i think, but! China might have their own tradition like this as well. It may be done in a different manner though, but has the same concept. I'm not sure though.
The food looks good.
nice!
We do the same thing on dia de lots muertos
Someday i'm moving to Japan...
