Wow I needed this today! At 73 I still have that feeling as a person who has lived doing things with my hands for many years. I started Art in 2019 and have had a lot of stumbling blocks but I will always pick myself up and say keep going🤗Thank you for the encouragement 💓

I’m so pleased you had a positive person who told you you were creative, I applied to a polytechnic years ago for a creative crafts diploma and the person who was taking in the candidates basically laughed at my work. Being young then it really affected my confidence and held me back from pursuing my passion for a long time. Obviously I didn’t stop creating as this is my life, but it’s sad how that one person had so much power and negativity over me. Taking it in it comes to mind that 40 years ago I subscribed for a study program in design techniques instead of in fine arts and 5 years later subscribed for becoming a psychologist instead of becoming an art therapist, all because of this talent thing. Now aged 60 plus am at university again learning art therapy finally. Experience has shown that 30 years working in the therapeutic field have made me a pretty good therapist, so another decade in the art field will make me quite an okey art person. I think you speak truth. It's about practicing over and over again with nothing but the mission to keep on learning what someone is passionate about

100% agree it comes down to interest. My mom has always heaped praise on me for being naturally talented, thinking she wasn't able to do what I do. A few years ago she gave watercolors a try and produced a pumpkin painting (via a tutorial) that I would not have been able to produce simply because I had no experience with watercolor. At that point, she had more interest in the medium than me, learned about it and was better at it.
This is great information Nick ❤️ Once I physically experienced what it felt like to let go of, tension of creating by the technical rules I felt free. Free to make marks as I please. And you know what... the first drawing I made after that realization still feels free when I look at it. That feeling is mine forever and is no longer in my head😀
This is wonderful. My Father, knew I love art & wanted to do it. But he felt, that logically, we weren’t rich, and I shouldn’t do it because I’ll starve. I love him, & I understood he wanted me to survive. And where I lived, no one became a famous artist. It felt like a think I’d be a Queen. My Dad and I were extremely close. But when he died, I started painting, and I loved it. I’m ok, not well enough to market my art, or go to art school. But I have spent 25yrs studying and painting. Hopefully one day I do find success in it. I always thought I’d be a famous Artist in my Ninety’s. Thank you for your truth.

I've signed up for Louise Fletcher's course and really hope to find my passion, lose my fear and be bold with what I love. I always thought that if you feel compelled to do something artistic (poetry, music, performing arts, painting or whatever) then you will more than likely also have the aptitude. I think people should listen to that voice that tells them to create. That is when the magic happens...eventually.
It is SO true what you say about talent! It is interest that you need, not talent. Any person interested in making art can do so. All it takes is the coordination required to tie your shoe laces. With that ability you can do art, if you have the interest to keep at it
Kind of like Billy Elliot! Anybody can learn to draw and it does help your confidence in art but it is not necessarily to be able to do photo realistic representations to understand art and to be good at it. That is in your soul!

This was a perfectly timed talk for me. I have never been to art college, always lacked self confidence & though I've done a bit of sketching from time to time, only recently have I started to paint. One year down the line and here I am watching your vid and listening to your words.... hearing you unpack your thoughts on ‘talent’... and our attitude to our own ability and worthiness to create art and a ‘penny dropped’ for me. The story of your interview for art school was really interesting..... that anyone can be taught to draw!! Hahaha! Now I can see that is all to do with ‘intention’. I am 68 years old this autumn and have so much yet to learn.... there just isn’t time to waste on doing anything that I don’t enjoy or pursuing any practice that leads me away from the pleasure of my creativity path. He'll no, that's rubbish. Okay, yes I had doubt early on but only because of my ignorance and personal baggage I possessed. But now I know! Everyone IS an artist, like everyone is a singer, a writer, a runner, a cook, etc. However, though some seem to have inherent talent, I don't believe that, everyone has to learn and practice and only in time with experience will a person succeed at anything. How many gold medals were won for the 100 yard dash without any practice or training. Such a ludicrous idea. Same with art. Where did thous crazy ludicrous ideas come from?????
When I was young, a teenager, I thought of myself as an artist and people told me they liked what I made. I decided I wasn’t “that good” so I gave it up. I encouraged others but not myself. I appreciate so much, the thought that art making can be learned like any subject. Even though I have always been labeled “creative” I didn’t believe this until today. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
