I appreciate how fun and intuitive you make painting look. The way you showed how to harmonize colors feels freeing and accessible. I’m certainly going to try it out. Thanks

YES!!! Many of us landscape oil painters use a "mother color" that's in all the other colors..just don't get toooo mixy and muddy with it...it's a delicate balance!!

I am so glad I found your videos, I am an ‘untrained’ creative having had only a few lessons over the years. I didn’t take the time for my desire to paint when I was younger, regrettably, but since I have showed up at my table consistently, I am learning! I am so thankful for access to your teaching through TH-cam, you are very relatable and helpful! Binge watching now!💕🇨🇦

BIG EYE OPENER FOR ME . THE COMBINATION OF PAINT COLOURS MAKES THE PAINTING UNIQUE IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE . IT CAN NOT EVER BE RECREATED WITH THE SAME COLOURS , STUNNING. . THIS IS WHAT MAKES ART SPECIAL , THANK YOU !

Hello, Nicholas! I'm glad to see you teaching this. I came up with a quite similar method of color harmonizing when I was in art school, back when dinosaurs ruled the earth! LOL Well, almost... It was 1973 and hard-edge painting was going strong at that time in the TTUSOA (Texas Tech University School of Art) Several of my professors had come from LA Art Institute, and Chinaud (i can't spell it but it was a big deal art school in LA decades ago). Anyway, I'm not sure why I bring this up except that I remember my color harmonizing scheme was not learned from them, I came up with it myself.
I was painting hard edge, taping off all shapes, painting on masonite hardboard, and I had that process DOWN!! I used wall paint rollers to avoid all paint marks (minimalism was right in my face, too) and I would wash the paint rollers after every color. It was quite a process oriented way to create paintings. I guess pulling off the tape was fun when I got to see the razor sharp lines of the Liquitex paint shapes next to each other. Yeah, it was :)
But my harmonizing - a lot like your method here. I would mix up, or down, really, a big jar of my "base color" as I called it. Then the other colors of the painting would be made from that base color. I could put any colors into the base color and it would work. Subtle colors were a big deal then, so usually I would have mostly close value colors, harmonized just like you're doing here :)
I 'm not sure I've ever told too many (or any) people how I came up with the colors. Your average person isn't too interested in color mixing... haha

That’s great and as you know you can also use the golden glaze all over the work at the end to harmonise. I’m returning to painting after a long absence and these videos are really motivating :-)

Wow! I’ve been struggling to integrate a landscape-esque palette into my abstract work. I watched this video and I’m already seeing promising results! Thanks! I can also see how it would be useful to pick the complementary color of the “mother” color - unmixed - to add contrast.

It’s 2022 and now there is a color available that’s similar to Golden Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold. It’s Liquitex or Golden Quinacridone Burnt Orange. I’ve never had both colors to compare, so I can’t speak to that, but it’s available and it’s gorgeous.

Thank you - very interesting and I would have loved to watch just one of the pages from your illustration work kept totally still just for a short moment. They looked so beautifull but you showed them in a rush. And I would have loved to see the book cover and the title of the book and even a link to where It can be bought.
And the same when you show a specific color like the super glazing color from Golden please hold the bottle still so that it is possible to read the name of the color. I did not get the name. Can anybody help?
