In this episode I'm in Hungary with Eelco, Estie and Andrea.
I already explored in Hungary recently, but went back for a reason.
An intact cold war bunker including a hospital. It's one of the best bunkers I've seen.
Actually these are BGS bunkers / shelters. This is a big square concrete block above the ground that protect against (B) bombs, (G) gas and (S)schrapnel. You can find this kind of facilities all over Hungary and they protected civilians and workers in case of a nuclear attack or war.

Always loved your channel but as someone who was an active duty marine for 6 years i'm curious if you realize how dangerous what you guys are doing is. A lot of the old war time bunkers in the US (not sure of stuff external to the US) Was built and made/or insulated with asbestos or lead paint. And also keep in mind when you're walking around these places you're kicking up dust that's possibly been dormant or untouched for decades. Again love you guys and your videos but for your own health and safety and the safety of your crew I'd actually recommend brining something like disposable Tyvek suits and a respirator. Just a FYI 90% of the old ships that have been abandoned are also filled with asbestos

Absolutely fantastic find. TY for treating it with respect. Is it typical for shelters to be above ground? Is that unique to Hungary? Since the focus seems to be on radiation and gas, was there no expectation of "regular" bombs or rockets? TY again. An absolutely fantastic video. The condition of some the items was impressive, like the winter jackets. Keep well.

My brain was exploding with wonder at the sheer enormity of unbelievably great finds, until i saw the reel of audio tape. I'd give literally anything to hear what's on that. I'm sure it's absolutely mundane notes about medical things or whatever, but still, it would be a piece of history. If I were there I'd borrow it, copy the contents of the tape and return it, if that's not being at all unethical as an explorer. I do believe we owe it to history to preserve such things, no matter how 'boring' they might be.
Mind boggling exploration there - great work there, lads and lasses!

Wow . if it were in Russia, it would have already been taken away for scrap metal and Khabar. I can't get my head around how the locals still haven't taken it away, because gas masks are right at the entrance. I saw a lot of rare things that are very difficult to find like a half mask from a KI-3 inhaler (I have been looking for 1.5 years and have not found it) a chemical protection suit based on ZK-1, which I have been looking for for 3 years. and at the moment when they entered the room with eo-14 (rooms with filters) I Ahuel, we had a bomb shelter in Moscow where there were about 120 such filters, everyone wanted to take them out, but not everyone managed to pick them up. and here it’s just that there are 100+ pieces in the room, I don’t understand how it costs everything and no one loots it.

For some reason, what I'm thinking about is that people went to work and somebody made those first aid bags, someone made the kit inside them.... Somebody packed the bags. Somebody stocked them. Etc. Etc. Somebody hated taking inventory of them. You know. Now they sit there forgotten. I wonder if anyone watching this is ever like "oh, yeah! Hey, I stocked those! Hey, grandkids! Come look!"

11:40 - Iodine tablets will block the absorption of radioactive iodine by the thyroid gland and reduce the risk of you contracting cancer of the thyroid gland. The idea is that you flood the thyroid with 'clean' iodine so the contaminated one does not get taken up by the thyroid as it is already 'full'. Only works against radioactive iodine though.

Incredible find, so much history there. But goodness guys, gloves and masks - you are touching a breathing so many contaminated things.
In the surgery that you found, that bed is used specifically for delivering babies, the stirrups and straps, the hole in the centre the 2 sections that separate in the leg section. I think the metal brackets across the room @33:00 would have had some type of large basin/bath and been used as a cradle, also to wash/clean the baby, there's a wash bowl connected to it.

I think the octopus thing at 8:49 may have been part of a Mercury vapour rectifier used to change high voltage AC power to DC. Similar things were used on the London Underground trains which run on 600v DC. And then I played the next part of the video and you said exactly that :)

It can rectify over 200A and the tube is ignited via a pin, that is lowered into the mercury pool with the help of a magnet. The tube should not overheat, because if so, there would be to much mercury vapor inside and it would backfire, therefore there would be no rectifier effect. Because of that, you can often see a fan that cools the tube down.

The company I work for used high voltage mercury arc valves to convert 230,000VAC to 500,000VDC to transmit power long distances to covert it back to AC. 1960's technology that was phased out in the 80's and replaced with solid state thyristors. Cool to see a small scale mercury arc valve

@@ShiningForce07 most abandoned places are illegal to visit, and yet the hobby exists.

Using these bunkers as examples, games like Metro and Fallout have it so wrong. After the first few years of abandonment, almost nothing would be useful by the time most survivors find these stockpiles. Anything like rubber or cloth would be dried out and inflexible, food would be almost entirely spoiled and all but the most heavily preserved machinery would be seized and rusted beyond use. Not to mention things like batteries require occasional discharge and recharge to be useful.

Really think America needs to be building shelters unground for the population, schools and hospitals along with rest homes 😊

Great video! I note how extensively the iron has rusted since 1952, and, that we're still using iron in our buildings, bridges and vehicles. Such waste we leave behind, as if nature will clean it all up.

If I could teleport you already know I’m teleporting to abandoned places especially ones that are historical and still have security.

    Exploring the Unbeaten Path
The spider she found at (30:08) it's from family "Leptonetidae" those are small spiders adapted to life in dark and damp areas, especially in the caves.
