Brownouts, Severe Thunderstorm and Clock Resets 6/22/2024

  • Some severe thunderstorms passed through the state during the evening of 6/22/2024. Strong winds resulted in electrical brownouts. I turned off the mains until the storms passed to prevent damage to equipment.
The driveway culvert and a gutter along the back of the house both partially clogged and flooded. I removed the silt buildup from the bottom of the culvert which should return it's performance to normal. I attempted to clear the clog in the gutter using a high pressure water spray nozzle on the garden hose but was not successful.
After turning the power back on, the file server needed to be restarted and all electronic clocks needed to be reset, including the time on the PBX, various cordless phones, weather stations, and clock/radios.

That was an absolute insane storm, We had some pretty severe weather in Pennsylvania too. Also, every five seconds between the flash of lightning and thunder is 1 mile. This was an excellent video, enjoyed it as always, and I’m glad everyone’s OK.

Wow, I never realized that the Carrier in the living room had a mechanical clock/timer...that's pretty cool. We had a quick thunderstorm last night that brought a good amount of rain. That's the one thing with summer is we have to be mindful about thunderstorms, at least in this part of the country.

The storm started Thursday, 6/20, in my location of MA. We lost power 3 hours that night. We were the only neighborhood out. Friday 6/21, a telephone pole in the same power grid, two streets over from me caught on fire. With that being said, they had to turn the power off for an hour that night.
Later that night in the next town over, my aunt and uncles house, my grandfather's house, and assisted living were out of power. They didn't get it back until midnight of Saturday, 6/22.

Not good. I don't think there was any damage that extensive around here.

Fiber optic cables don't carry electricity. Actually, they use them to trigger those lightning experiments where they shoot rockets into the sky that trail a thin copper wire. I mean, you wouldn't want lightning to feed into a lightning bunker.
Installing a lightning rod would make for an interesting video. I use my outdoor antenna as a lightning rod. The mast must be grounded, anyway. I just took the 6 gauge ground wire a few inches above the mast and sharpened the tip of the wire to a point.

What a crazy storm Jordan. At least you’re not having the flooding issues that we are experiencing here in the upper Midwest right now. Many communities in our state in Minnesota are flooded with rivers out of their banks and roads flooded over because of the rivers and fields. Glad that you made it though and got everything back up and running.

    • @JordanU

It hasn't flooded here in a while, there's been hardly any rain of substance this month.

But, I recently ported my LANDLINE # to be my cell phone #.

I forgot to say I recently ( last week ) ordered a XLINK BT HD Bluetooth Dongle. And connected my cell phone to it, and then plugged the XLINK into a corded landline phone and its like I still have home phone service!

Cool video man! To answer your question on whether fiber cable can carry lightning, the answer is no because it has the protective insulation that prevents the lightning from damaging the cable itself.

Some place had like 110 mm of rain. We need to learn how to live with that kind of weather because it going to be something normal.

    Your math was very close!
If you count the number of seconds between the flash of lightning and the sound of thunder, and then divide by 5, you'll get the distance in miles to the lightning: 5 seconds = 1 mile, 15 seconds = 3 miles, 0 seconds = very close.
