  • My old man has an original Cold Steel Tai Pan san maiIII and I had the chance today to have my new san mai Tai Pan in a side by side comparison. It was an interesting exercise and to be honest the two knives are very close in quality, fit and finish and overall feel.
The Cold Steel Tai Pan san maiIII is made in Japan is VG-1/420J laminate and comes with a leather sheath. My old man has had a kydex sheath made for his Tai pan as well.
The new Cold Steel Tai Pan san mai is made in Taiwan and is VG-1/420J(?) laminate and comes with a Secure-Ex sheath.
I post all of my videos at Australian Blade Forums

I am sorry about the lighting, this video was done in the back yard of my old man's house and I did the best I could.

I think ColdSteel switched from production in Japan to production in Taiwan in 2006. Thank you SO much for the comparison.

Great video brother. It is interesting and appreciated to see the comparison between the two. True blade enthusiasts understand this. And solid decision to eventually get the Kydex sheath for your Tai Pan. I have purchased many custom Kyndex sheaths for various knives. I do appreciate the original leather sheath, it's well made, fashionable and just smells of distinct quality of leather and wood. I wouldn't take it on a moist camping excursion however. The older San Mai III version is less pointy and it's edge does infact protrude slightly more than the Taiwan version. I prefer the minor difference in shape of the Japanese version despite the Taiwan version possibly having a slight edge in stabbing penetration with less force due to it's more acute tip. The Japanese version I'd say would have the advantage in slashing and cutting due to it's slightly wider body and edge actually being more pronounced that pass significantly beyond the ricasso compared the the Taiwan version. These little characteristics matter in performance. Quality between the two is nearly the same even though most everyone including myself feels the older versions have that extra bit of love and care put into them, especially with that stamp of being made in Japan. Overall I prefer the Japanese version with it's slight difference in blade shape, and it's more pronounced edge, and the finish of the blade is just better.

They did a disservice to the customer by switching to Taiwan. I haven’t researched this, but did they reduce the price for the customer after making this change?

Place opening of kydex sheath in hot water, it will soften the kydex. Gently pull the top of the sheath open. Then place the knife in. Adjust untill you are happy with the fit. Hot air guns can over do it. Try hair dryer. But i find hot water does not loosen it up too much.

They are both the exact same steel. Just put together in Taiwan. Some knives from Japan were not always the same shape.

no sorry John, Cold Steel has clearly stated they changed from san maiIII which uses VG-1 to san mai which uses VG-10, which are different steels.

You can see actual laminate lines on the Japanese one the other one just looks like it was Exter something need to see a slight difference in the steel by the edge of the newer one with the old Japanese when you could actually see you laminate line which is awesome…. Not a fan of the new ones especially the ones coming from the new Texas company

I haven't done any point tests, and you are right Cold Steel does market the Tai Pan as being able to resist tip snapping. The only thing is it is a $300 knife and I am hesitant to test it that way.
