Ja Nus Hons Pris by Richard the Lionheart - Edward Foster - medieval gittern

- This beautiful mournful ballad was purportedly written by Richard the Lionheart in the 12th Century whilst he was held captive. I have gently elaborated around the melody but kept true to the heart of the song. This is true trouvère music. Enjoy.
Best listened to through headphones or speakers.

Thank you for your wonderful words! 🙂
Vielleicht hast du damals schon mal gelebt.
I truly believe that it’s ancestral memories…

It sounds so peaceful its like a dreaming moment thank you so much ! I hope I can play this instrument one day
Thank you!
Imagine the guards listening to a king reduced to a prisoner composing a song about his sorrow.
Achingly beautiful and played with such sensitivity... thank you.
Thank you! :)
Beautiful... I'm curious how we even know what this song sounded like. Has it been performed and transcribed by musicians throughout the ages? Or did King Richard's original manuscript survive almost 1000 years of hsitory?
It is notated in manuscripts :) So yes to both your questions
There was this documentary about China in which an old guy was playing the guqin, an ancient stringed instrument. That melody was written by Confucius, over 2,500 years ago (obviously, Confuçius had sheet music)! But Plato'ㅅ ,main interests were ts philosophy and
@@John-qd5of I'd be very interested in seeing this documentary. Do you recall it's title?
Confucius having sheet music? Doubt it. Source please.
Na h Confucius didn't have sheet music, he probably had music theory developed to write down a song which was also common in ancient Mesopotamia. Ancient complete music theory for a song is seiklios epitaph of ancient Greeks.
But this doesn't mean sheet music or staff notation.
Sheet notation was invented and developed in middle age Europe from 10th century to 13th century. With 14th century staff notation came to it's final form we know today in Europe.

just about to order our first 5 string gittern........ won't pick it up until September at the Medieval Music in the Dales festival, but looking forward to it! Thank you for your art! I really like your drawings as well! Sleeping fox is brilliant!
Lovely! Are you getting one from George? Thank you for your compliments!
@@edwardfosterart3848 yes, it is a George Stevens! And it's a 4 course single he's reconstructing after a Cantiga 13th century image, although me wanting the single strings may make it even earlier, he says, so I'm a happy bunny! g-d-g'-c' tuning....
Really amazing work, my friend.
Thank you! :)
Wonderful
Thanks 🙂
Great! Such a culture! Greetings from Siberia, Russia!

As sung by Blondel de Nesle when searching for his imprisoned king, Richard the Lionheart?
What a beautiful interpretation ! How do you tune your gittern ?
Thank you! DADGC
I can't stop coming back to listen to your gittern lament again and again. It's the most melancholic interpretation of Ja Nuns Hons Pris on gittern I have come through : we literally feel the king's pain, sadness and powerless rage in the surprisingly deep voice of this little instrument. It talks straight to the heart ! Even your face shows how much you feel it, and I love it. Amazing interpretation, thank you (again, yes, but we cannot like more than once, lol) !! I'd be over the moon if I had such a gittern and be able to play this. But for the moment I do my best on my ukulele baritone tuned in low-D. I can't read music, so I sing over arpeggios. Not as medieval sounding, but already a little spark of bliss ! 😊
Ah bless you for your lovely words! I'm sure that your playing of your baritone uke is beautiful too
sweet
Thank you!
Beautiful, really considering getting a gittern, lute or cittern. The gittern seems to be a more elegant instrument than the cittern but more out there than the lute which is a nice trade of. Have you played any other instruments?
Thank you 🙂 Yes the gittern is a great instrument. I also play lute, guitar, etc. The lute is beautiful too. Happy to recommend instrument makers if you need help
@@edwardfosterart3848 Well, I see many gitterns for 3000 euros and up, but maybe there is a second hand one closer to half the price?
It’s a beautiful song quiet. It’s so sad. It was when King Richard was in prison. Hey, where can I get one of those medieval guitars at bro please tell me.
Thank you! The gittern was made for me by George Stevens :)
Where could I buy a guittern such as yours?
Details in the description
beautiful rendition, but one note, why does almost no one besides Owain Phyfe put vocals on this song?
Thank you! Yes, he sings it beautifully
How do we know the Lionheart wrote this?
Oh wow, this is fantastic!
I play guitar, uke, and saz, but im really looking for an older sound like this!
How does the gittern compare to the lute in terms of skill crossover?
Thank you 🙂The gittern is not complicated to play and is much easier than lute. I play the gittern with plectrum mostly but it also sound good with fingers, as in the video. Hope that helps
@edwardfosterart3848 thank you so much, where did you get yours? Do you know any good makers in the UK?
@@Asheanae I bought the gittern from George Stevens. In the description there is a link to his website 🙂
@edwardfosterart3848 oh they're gorgeous and completely out of my league!
Gonna have to break out the chisels! 😅
Lutes mandolins sitars and even early violins music of the middle ages especially in England Germany France Russia
This really is a beautiful piece of music. And you are exceptional with your instrument. Where did you learn to play that?
Thank you 🙂I came from a classical guitar background so that helped. Medieval music is often just a melody line of a song so you just improvise around this.
Wow, Richard. Not only did I not know you were a musician, but I also didn't think you had anything that gentle in you. I'd bow to the king, but you've been dead for, what, 800 years?
Never heard the tune or the instrument before... Fell in love with both instantly. Thank you very much.
Thank you 🙂
Lovely! Beautiful sounding instrument.

Delightful. Also, so pleased yu have details in the description below the video. When I saw your gittern, I immediately thought it looked like George Stevens had made it, and he had! very nice tone!
Thank you!
This melody reminds me of a past life, so clearly and realistically that it seems like just yesterday I was listening to this song and pictures from the past appear before my eyes...

Richard the Lionheart was french and was also become an English King and his known in the Knights Templar and the crusades
His mother was the Duke (ruling duchess, rather than a consort duchess) of Aquitaine. It was almost half a century before it was part of France rather than just theoretically controlled by the Count of Paris (who the French Dukes got together and made king because he was unable to stop the dukes from whatever they wanted to do).
