I work for a Ram dealer and have driven all power trains many times.
The V6 is for the person who doesn’t care and doesn’t tow but wants a truck. Towing with this engine works but it’s revving high the whole time. The hemi is the best overall option but mpg is painful. It’s the best choice for short distance driving. The 3rd gen eco diesel is a wonderful power train if you ride the torque curve and don’t expect the acceleration of the V8. Mpg on our 2 wheel drive parts delivery truck has a lifetime average of 27 on almost 80% highway driving. I usually just use work trucks if I need one but recently I bought an eco diesel when we were down to our last 2022 Big Horn. Ram stopped letting us order that motor. I have added the Banks Derringer and now I have the responsiveness of the V8 with way better fuel economy and torque more like our Cummins diesels on our 2500 and 3500 trucks. I’m living the dream.

Thats right, i have a 2023 Classic Warlock quad cab with the 3.6, it has the tow package but it doesnt see any use for that. Actually a Nissan Frontier had 310 hp and more towing capacity that my warlock but i wont be selling mine and take a big depreciation on the 1st year for a Frontier SL or Pro 4X

I hardly tow but I fill the bed pretty well a couple times a year. Otherwise it’s just my daily driver. The v6 is perfectly fine. Super quiet and smooth. Everyone complains about the lack of power but GMs legendary 5.3 truck engine made similar power and it was good enough to keep in their trucks all throughout the early 2000s.

The etourqe is optional in the V8 and standard on the 5 gen V6. If you dont want the V6 etourqe, you will have to buy the classic. I have the V6 etourqe and am very satisfied with it so far.

I have had 3 Ram 1500s with Hemi engines in the last 5 years. I currently have a 2017 Ram 4x4 with a Hemi with Eco Mode (or whatever they call it). I have really loved every one of them, but 2 weeks ago, my Hemi blew up with 100,600 miles on it. I didn't even have the Hemi Tick. I had the dealer put in a Remanufactured Hemi with a 3 year 100,00 mile warranty. No doubt, I will get rid of it in about 2 years.

good segment. Ram has always been ahead of the others in terms of comfort. I've had a late 90's Ram 1500, a 2000 Ram 2500 5.9 6 speed which was a brute, a 2014 Ram Sport 5.7 Hemi auto and now a 2022 Ram Rebel 1500 Echo-diesel. of those.....i loved them all. they were all solid trucks. i think i like my Echo-diesel the best because it was likely my last truck so i special ordered it and got everything on it that i wanted to include the 33 gallon fuel tank for extended range. it topped out at around $79000 off the lot. I only get about 21 mpg around town and maybe 23-25 if going on a long or extended trip. i think its the difference in the tires. The Rebel comes with the off road tires verses the other models that have all season radials. My nephew has a 2021 Echo-diesel and he regularly gets 28 mpg but he has the all season radials. Fuel prices shot up after i got it in June. i was driving over 100 miles round trip to work each day in a 3.6 Wrangler and then a 3.6 Gladiator which got ok mileage but not great. other than the current cost of fuel and the crappy Uconnect radio which seems to have my SIRIUS radio stations drop off randomly, no complaints. thanks for the segment.

The 5.7 Hemi has come a long way in 20 years. With the 8 speed it just goes and they’re not super hard to mod or maintain in the Ram. Wished they’d keep it as some kind of variant (4.7 displacement with a turbo or hybrid setup) and just replace the 3.6 with the Hurricane.

A friend sells Dodge products in the Seattle area. He just took a 2022 Ram 1500 in on a trade. MSRP was $70k and they're selling it with 1500 miles for $57k. The reality is that the first owner probably paid $77K or more with tax, license and fees and those 1500 miles cost him at least $20,000. That's an enormous loss.... it really highlights the issues with paying top dollar for vehicles new off the lot.

Great comparison Ben. It should help those that are considering engine choice in their new Ram 1500. I had the 3.6L in my Wrangler, and the little engine did everything I ask without a grumble. But with interstate driving it needed the high RPMs to keep the Jeep at speed. Uphill on the interstate it would hover around 3K up to 35K rpms. I considered the 3.6L for my '22 Ram 1500. However, I decided to go with the 5.7L, because the mpgs were close to the same and the weight of the Ram was much more than the Jeep. If I was just using my Ram around town the 3.6L would be fine, but on the highway in the Ram I would be afraid it would have to wring itself out to keep the speed up.

The v6 in the wrangler is detuned at 285hp and 260 torque. The v6 in the ram has 305 horsepower and 296 torque. That little bit makes up for the weight difference especially with a 3.55 rear end ratio. Either way the hemi is more fun but the v6 in the ram isn’t quite the dog it is in the wrangler. I bought a 2022 Laramie with the 5.7 e-torque and a buddy brought a 2022 Longhorn with the eco-diesel. He does get significantly better fuel mileage than my gas hemi.
But Ben is correct, factor the extra cost of the diesel at purchase and extra cost at the pump, it could take at least 3 years for the eco-diesel to become cheaper per mile. I will acknowledge the diesel engine should likely last longer all things equal.

I test drove the 5.7. I was really impressed with the power, and the quiet interior. I’m not a fan of the eco diesel. It just doesn’t have the performance for the cost vs savings. Even in the BigHorn you can get a very nicely equipped pickup. Keep up the great work, Ben!

So odd question Ben, I just got a 23 laramie with hemi etorque.. when do you really feel that power of the hemi? I do notice a little bit lag to start off. Is there a way around that? Or that the engine just trying to break itself in?!

I have a 2022 e-torque. Have you tried disabling the auto on/off function? That could be giving you a perceptible lag. Some people absolutely hate the feature, but I'm indifferent at least in my first 1k of driving.

We have a ford 4.2. Has pulled trailer from Idaho to California and back numerous times. No problems. But has only 202 hp. But you complain about 100 hp more. Guarantee ours is way slower than the 3.6. Maybe need to compare to things real people can afford. Also do most of our own work but mechanic in Boise says he sees 4.2 with 300000 miles regularly.

Traded my 3.6 for a 5.7. The 3.6 gets 3 mpg better than the hemi. That's about 65 more miles per tank which adds up. I like the hemi but the 3.6 is a great combination of power and efficiency.

    Hands down Hemi.
    Sound love it
Plus I don’t buy a truck to be fuel efficient lol
I will say this my 23’ Ram Rebel with 5.7 Hemi E-Torque with 3.92 axle
Isn’t great on mileage as the 3.21 or 3.24
    On average it’s 17.5 MPG with 3.21
And 12.1 having 700 miles on my Rebel with the 3.92
Now yes I’m sure that’s due to various reasons. Whether driving habits, dealing with cold with and having the remote start, and driving city or highway, and also now having 33 inch tires instead of the normal street tires. But both MPG I’ve listed are my winter MPGs
I have a few routes I take to work and one is city with highway near tail end. And the other is city to country roads to a few miles city. Total distance either route is around 16 miles.
I can’t report numbers for summer time at this time cause obviously I just got it 700 miles ago. But again I didn’t buy this truck for fuel efficiency but you definitely notice the differences in MPG

Agree, I've been following the ED's for months now and have gotten tons of feedback. I will say the 1st and 2nd Gens are definitely pretty bad and clicking time bomb for engine failure due to the EGR system... However the 3rd gens have received very positive feedback includng some already into the 6 figure mileage range. If you maintain 3rd Gen, seems to be a long laster for sure. Keep in mind the 3rd gen was 80%+ redesigned from the ground up, but unfortunately sales suffered from all the negativity and engine failures of the 1st and 2nd Gens. I find most ppl that speak against the newer ecodiesel in the end have no idea what their talking about and are forum trollers.
