I'm Japanese, so I'll answer your question. In Japan, there is a belief that children up to the age of seven are half spirit, and children at that age can see many spirits and ghosts. This is a remnant of the time when medical care was not yet developed, and the mortality rate of children under the age of seven was high. That's why in Japan, there is a custom of celebrating a child's third, fifth, and seventh birthdays at a shrine as special occasions. The souls of children who survive the age of seven stabilize from spirits to human souls, and gradually lose their connection to the spirit world, and when they become adults, they are no longer able to see ghosts or Yokai. Aira was only able to see Acrobatic Silky, who had become a ghost, because she was still little kid. However, the moment Aira, a high school student, got her hands on Okarun's ball, her connection to the spirit world was unlocked, which led to the subsequent development of the story.

The interesting part of this, is that this also happened in the west where the supernatural was more dismissed. During the Victorian era especially, the idea of children being able to "see spirits" and be closer with "that world" was also really prevalent. A lot of old cultures surprisingly connected these two, probably all for similar reasons. This was one of my favorite topics to look into when it came to supernatural shit because there are so many possible ways to dive into this. Like the idea that of this, "people could have actually never believed in at the time", and could have just been purely used as a coping mechanism for adults that then became so intrenched in society it permeated that into culture.

Momo and Aira both received all those memories. The manga made it more clear with the final page of this chapter with mother and daughter holding hands and walking together towards a white light. I think Turbo Granny’s lack of compassion was more of an (other)worldly matter-of-fact approach. You gotta remember that she’s a) a yokai and b) has seen centuries of monstrous outcomes. She recognized that she, Momo, and Okarun couldn’t do anything for Aira or Silkie - it was up to them up save each other. Basically she’s just a big tsundere. She’s not actually callous.
Yeah, taking it from her persepctive as a yokai that has experienced seeing so many girls being mlstd and/or klld she probably has her emotion turned off
Man that episode broke me ... and even after watching a couple of reactions to it, it doesn't get any easier. I still burst out in tears every time. Just thinking about this episode gets me emotional.
Some unclear things: The "thud" was from the Mom. She was dancing in the roof for the last time and jumped off. You can see the stars in the background turning into buldings. It wasn't showed in the scene because the S word is sensitive in Japan. Aira was able to see her ghost before she got the golden ball simply because she was a kid. It's a common assumption that kids can see things like that
Yeah. And the child part wasn't unclear; the child either got trafficked or killed. Period. It was just too grim to show obviously, so it was heavilyy implied. Made me so shook
Attack on Titan, Heavenly Delusion and plenty of other anime have had very explicit suicide scenes. I think they didn't show it because it was just a cool directorial/stylistic choice.
Another perfectly crafted episode, with a few points worth mentioning: 1.From the money on the bedside table and the room's setup, we can infer that being a sex worker was one of her many jobs (this shows her willingness to do anything for her daughter). 2.From the comic, we learn that after waking up, she realized she had lost her daughter, which led her to jump off the building. 3.She actually became a wandering ghost for quite some time, having forgotten everything. Later, it was the touch of the pink-haired girl that brought back her memories, transforming her from an ordinary ghost into a vengeful spirit. Truly heartbreaking.
@@JusteAuHasard Although the author didn't provide a very direct answer, based on the surrounding details, based on the various details in the story, your conclusion is completely reasonable. There is a very high probability that it is exactly as you suggested.
@@JusteAuHasard One thing to note is that sex work isn't technically legal in Japan, so Acro Silky would have to be involved with the very wrong kind of people (for example, yakuza with very serious backing) to be able to take up that job. She might have been forced into it by them, who knows. And the people who are capable of that can be very ruthless.

A lot of that industry is extremely grim stories of eternal debt and terrible criminals and being shunned and excluded from society.
Just to give you a heads up you will get more episodes like this every now and then and you would also get the nerd looking for balls stuff. Dandadan has many genres meshed together and one of them is tragedy.
As a Mixed man, retired Army vet at 43 and happily married with 2 daughters. I can tell you the reality of this is exactly when women are choosing the Bears!
Now you see everything this show/manga has to offer. It seamlessly merges comedy, horror, romance, and tragedy in a way that doesn't feel forced or awkward. It's quickly become one of my favorites and being caught up with the manga, it only gets crazier from here
Silky's rooftop dance was censured but masterfully created with the city lights in the background the water after the rain on the roofto, the edge of the building shown subtly and the use of sound "the thud" at the end to convey she died after jumping off the rooftop
some people said that child tend to see something adult can't see, such as ghost or imaginational friend. Aira seeing acro-silky when she was kid might be related to those believe
@@A-SUS someone mentioned that it's that plus she just witnessed her mother's death, so she was more attuned to deaths and ghosts than usual, even though at the time she wasn't fully aware of the concept of death
This gets explained later by Seiko. All kids have some ability to see spirits and yokai. They're more connected, then as they grow they lose that connection.
Dandadan can be anything you want it to be. They lure you in with the nutsack and then they hit you with feels, or laughs, or romance, or hype. The manga is masterful stuff and the adaptation is hitting all the right notes.
It's widely accepted (around the world) that the very young and the very old (as well as those close to death) can see spirits. The very young have not been conditioned to ignore them and the very old are keeping company with friends and family who have already parted. The manga was already heartbreaking. The way they adapted it here did take it up another level.
That ballet self-checkout scene was heartbreaking but beautifully done. Probably for the best that it wasn't thrown in your face as much as in the manga since that's a heavy and sensitive thing RIP Acro-Silky, another of anime's best parents🙏🏾
A lot of people seem to think that acro silky bled out on the street, but unfortunately, the scene of her dancing on the water, was actually her dancing on the ledge of a rooftop in the manga. I’m pretty sure you can figure out what that *THUD* means that follows afterward….
You and everyone who hasn't read the manga are in for such a wonderful ride. A sprawling, broad, hilarious, tragic, emotionally high and low epic love story that has everything.
LETSGOOOOOOOOO Edit : also, your confusion about why Aira can see her when she was a child, is because in asia (at least in my country) there are many folktales about kids being sensitive to spirits. So everytime a kid talk to themself, or suddenly got distracted by something, usually they see a spirit around them.
Kids and animals i think. Which is why when anything supernatural happens, dogs would start barking and birds would start flying around. I'm lowkey under the impression that kids in american movies always have some 3rd eye as well tbh 😂
This was an heartbreaker in the manga as well and I was kinda worried about how Science Saru would handle its adaptation, but holy shit if they didn't knock it out of the park. The music, the animation, the overall direction and pace of the scene. Everything was ON POINT.
The dance it have to be censoured, the manga show clearly that she is dancing in a roof and at the end she jumps to her death. That was the sound, her falling into the ground
Finally found my next piano piece! This is the first 2024 anime causing me to blame the rain while inside, and that melody is haunting but beautiful... much like the episode itself.
In the scene where she's dancing, if you see the details, you can see the rim of the rooftop and as she makes that finale jump, you see a cut of the roof edge
14:00 They are a bit subtler than in the manga here, but basically since her daughter was taken and she was bleeding out fast, she jumped off a roof. That's what hte sequence on teh rooftop, fall and "thud" were.
When i heard of Dandadan i didnt read it at first. When i got absolutely hooked on mangas, i tried it as one of the first recommendations and caught up in a couple of days. Its one of mangas and anime that really speak to my weird curiosity. I expected great things from a anime adaptation but this... This is one of the best adaptations ever. Its like Jojo and CSM that really try to recreate the spirit of the manga and translate it to new applications of the animation. It feels cinematic, the music is incredible. And like those shows, its an anime that really makes me hyped for the next seasons because i know which scenes would be improved and i want to see how.
The urge to watch this episode all day but I'm halting it til I get home from work cause I read the manga and it was brutal I didn't wanna cry from work but yey Carlie and Ange reaction 🎉 Imma need to rehydrate soon😅
@@natalimoina how so? It's quite a popular opinion that Demon Slayer doesn't really do a very good job in making you feel for most of the demons when we get their backstories, and even the best ones are nowhere close to this level. All of the most emotional moments are when the good guys are dying, like Rengoku or when Nezuko almost burned for example.
14:17 well if you take a look at the background where the mom is dancing. She is stranded by city lights and they are below her. She is in top of a building dancing one last time and then she jumped off. In the manga it was clearly shown that she was in a rooftop and then she did a huge pirouette jumping down. the reason things were censor is probably because time slots the show is airing in Japan and it can be a very sensitive subject. Japan has a huge suicide rate and is kinda taboo to show scenes like that.
It seems like her daughter died as well. Aira says "Take them to a more fortunate, kinder world" as a scene of them both plays. I was hoping we'd get to see her daughter grown up later but i found this out after searching it up. Man this episode is tragic.
@@StudioTera20 I checked these scenes in the manga and its more clear. The child and mom were holding hands in the afterlife. Unfortunately its 100% talking about them. Also the Yokai and mom are the same person so it cant be that.
In Japan stories and folklore often have children seeing spirits before aging out of it, so much so that many anime just assume you as a viewer already understand that.

The dance scene was on top of a building rooftop. After scouring to catch up to her daughter and her captors, she decided to kill herself by jumping off of a building which is why we hear that thud after her dance. As for the girl, I can only guess that she's dead as well since Aira's words were "take them to a more kinder world" which would entail both Acrosilky and her daughter. The dudes were probably debt collectors or something of the like and took the girl to sell her off, sell her organs, or something else absolutely horrific. Either way, the reason I think that is because Acrosilky knew that when they ran off with her, it was all over for her, and thus why she killed herself. +Aira was probably able to see Acrosilky when she was a little toddler because kids have a bit more spiritual afinity compared to adults. So they lose the ability to see and interact with them as they get older unless they get activated again for good like with Okarun's balls
I think was cutting onions or something.... what an episode. The mom dancing after what happened is her dancing of the roof of a building. Just... wow...
This episode implies that Silky was sleeping with people while working multiple jobs to support her child. In the end she ended up dancing to her demise from the roof & not being able to save her daughter, only reuniting in the afterlife. What a tragic masterpiece this was... tears
Dont know if many of you noticed, but the shot she is dancing almost on top of water, you can see city lights and she falling down. She jumped from the top of a building.
ya that needed to be more obivous, i didnt even see it jst seen in comments it what the end was. shame they had to censor it. i thought she just got back up off the road then feel and died the first time.
15:30 In japanese folklore as well as many other cultures, it is believed that children and people who witness death closely, get a strong connection to spirits and are capable of seeing them. When Aira was a kid, she witnessed her mother die, so this along the fact of her being a little child, explains why she could see Acro Silky at that time, it is kind of implied in the manga as well as how Silky exactly died (the thump sound you mentioned), which is a very delicate subject in Japan.
15:20 She was definitely already a spirit, that's why she transformed straight away after 'realising' that Aira was her daughter (obviously not the case, but she genuinely thought she was). In fiction, children are often more open to those kinds of things than adults, so they can see spirits, and lose the ability as they grow up. EDIT: It seems like there is also more to it in Japanese culture specifically; NekoNekoKainushi's comment explains it better.
The mom sold her body to provide for the little girl. She took a little off the top to try to buy her girl the dress and her "handlers" found out they were short on her payment so they best her up and to the girl. Notice in the dancing scene, she's on a rooftop. It's an artful way of presenting she ended herself. The little girl sadly either died or was "put to work" by these horrible men. It's implied she died afterwards.
Aira learned Acro was just a stranger. Even so, she pretended to be her daughter to console her soul. Oh god, we wittnessed the born of another goddess heroine in this show.
the "thud" is the sound of falling when the silky acrobat lady commits suicide when she jumps from the roof of the building at the end of her ballet dance and not the stars but the street lights... because the suicide scene is very sensitive. in some countries it is displayed in symbolic form
15:08 little kid often can see something like that actually, I believe some of them realize or not often have an imaginary friend cuz they can see, the scene showing information that she can see her the acro-silky lady there so she can see, no need to deny that information.
tissue box marked safe on this episode, we weren't if not looking for balls, we're bawling in this anime, well played seeing the thumbnail still makes me tear up a little bit
I read the manga but i'll never though this anime's version was so awesome made (Animations & music). It's really a plus to the Manga, i re-discover this moment. The way we saw a story in 360° like the music box of a woman dancing.More infos about this poor woman, she worked in so many jobs even prostitution then when she lost her child, she made a last dance a jump from a building/balcony. Aira and the Yokai share a same pain, the lost of their loved one Mother/daughter and they share at the end this pain and this forgiveness/appeasement. Good job to staff who made this episode.
It's incredible how Aira seemed a little special since her appearance and from this moment I see her as a very beautiful character in terms of her actions
Acro Silky was dancing on the top of a building and on the climax of the dance she jumped off the edge. Its censored here and i didnt see any anime-only catching it. Its also implied that the little girl died after some while, by the way Aira wishes them to be together.
There'll be more deep stories in the future. To me dandadan is such a masterpiece because of how well it mixes so many genres in one big incredible well written story, but the anime is making it even greater if how well directed, animated and produced it's been. I'm updated to the manga and knew what was going to happen, still I got so shocked with this episode... beyond perfection
It shows the mother take an extra bill out of the envelope to pay for the red dress, also implied earlier by the oversized shoes, and her inability to afford proper ones. The mother was directly responsible for her child's life and circumstances, thus her feelings and responses at the very end. the fact that this hits so hard on people, and 95% won't catch all of the subtlety is honestly incredible on the studios part.
The scene where the lady were dancing was actually referring to her suicide by jumping off a rooftop, if you slow down the fps, you can actually see her dancing off the the edge of the building at the end, and the sound comes by…
I was not prepared for this... this tragic story coupled with this MAGNIFICENT and POWERFUL music T.T it was too much for my heart. I can see how heartbreaking this scene is in the manga but with the power that can bring music, it's even worst T.T I'll never forget this episode.
Not only is silky working multiple jobs, she’s also a prostitute, which is why we see her waking up in a love hotel with money on the desk from her client. And the scene of her dancing actually took place on the roof of the apartment but was censored due to sensitive subject matters. There were city lights, and the water is simply puddles from the rain. She jumped off the building and killed herself afterwards, which is why there is a loud stump and a blackout soon after. This anime is just incredible and has everything, and all of these are just put together beautifully :’)
I think the fact that aira was so young when she first saw her probably has to do with the fact that in ghost movies and ghost documentaries they state that kids are more likely to see spirits and such
I have no idea she did the unthinkable before I heard it from manga reader. Imagine if the anime show a tiny glimpse of the building after she dance.... Part of me glad they didn't include it but part of me kinda want it... But then again don't think the outcome would be different. Both manga and anime did a superb job.
Basically the mother used some of the money she owed to buy her daughter that dress, so they went to her house to collect something else in return. This obviously included her daughter
Seems like this anime can be serious after all… Beautiful episode

The "thud" was from the Mom. She was dancing in the roof for the last time and jumped off. You can see the stars in the background turning into buldings. It wasn't showed in the scene because the S word is sensitive in Japan.
Aira was able to see her ghost before she got the golden ball simply because she was a kid. It's a common assumption that kids can see things like that
Yeah right
Yeah. And the child part wasn't unclear; the child either got trafficked or killed. Period. It was just too grim to show obviously, so it was heavilyy implied. Made me so shook
@@daniellaaa24 In manga they two meet eachother in the other side (cap 17 on the manga, last pannel)
Attack on Titan, Heavenly Delusion and plenty of other anime have had very explicit suicide scenes. I think they didn't show it because it was just a cool directorial/stylistic choice.
She was harvested for her organs iirc@@daniellaaa24
Another perfectly crafted episode, with a few points worth mentioning:
1.From the money on the bedside table and the room's setup, we can infer that being a sex worker was one of her many jobs (this shows her willingness to do anything for her daughter).
Truly heartbreaking.
why did those guys beat her up? is it because of the debt?
@@JusteAuHasard Although the author didn't provide a very direct answer, based on the surrounding details, based on the various details in the story, your conclusion is completely reasonable. There is a very high probability that it is exactly as you suggested.
@@JusteAuHasard One thing to note is that sex work isn't technically legal in Japan, so Acro Silky would have to be involved with the very wrong kind of people (for example, yakuza with very serious backing) to be able to take up that job. She might have been forced into it by them, who knows. And the people who are capable of that can be very ruthless.
@@hagahong3327there are many ways to get into sex work, but yes she owed $

Excuse me, I wanted to see a show about a nerd looking for his balls. I didn't expect to get my heart broken
It's still about a nerd emoji looking for his balls, just expect to get slammed with horrific shit like this every now and then.
It's quickly become one of my favorites and being caught up with the manga, it only gets crazier from here
Me and my friend watch these together, and we were almost completely silent this entire episode
Silky's rooftop dance was censured but masterfully created with the city lights in the background the water after the rain on the roofto, the edge of the building shown subtly and the use of sound "the thud" at the end to convey she died after jumping off the rooftop
Had to rematch a couple of times but caught it at the end. Thanks for pointing that out. 👍
I ugly cried twice watching this episode
Same I haven't even stopped yet
子供を持つ父親です。全ての親に見て欲しい。私は泣きました。比喩表現ではありません。アニメを見て泣きました。美しく、悲しく、温かい。そういうエピソードです。
some people said that child tend to see something adult can't see, such as ghost or imaginational friend.
The piano quivering as acro silky broke down was just so good. They're doing an amazing job with the adaptation
10 out of FUCKING 10. MASTERCLASS animation and storytelling. WAUW
兄貴のオープニングの演奏が毎回大好きです🎶
ダンダダン!ダンダダン!ダンダダン🎶
It's widely accepted (around the world) that the very young and the very old (as well as those close to death) can see spirits.
The very young have not been conditioned to ignore them and the very old are keeping company with friends and family who have already parted.
The manga was already heartbreaking. The way they adapted it here did take it up another level.
That ballet self-checkout scene was heartbreaking but beautifully done. Probably for the best that it wasn't thrown in your face as much as in the manga since that's a heavy and sensitive thing
RIP Acro-Silky, another of anime's best parents🙏🏾
A lot of people seem to think that acro silky bled out on the street, but unfortunately, the scene of her dancing on the water, was actually her dancing on the ledge of a rooftop in the manga. I’m pretty sure you can figure out what that *THUD* means that follows afterward….
You and everyone who hasn't read the manga are in for such a wonderful ride. A sprawling, broad, hilarious, tragic, emotionally high and low epic love story that has everything.
Aaah, the classic Tanjiro headbutt. Good casting.
LETSGOOOOOOOOO
Edit : also, your confusion about why Aira can see her when she was a child, is because in asia (at least in my country) there are many folktales about kids being sensitive to spirits.
18:15 "I can't see them having sad backstories"
OOOOOHHH BOY
Yeah about that... 😅

Thankfully i dont remember them saying that or else i would've been spoiled on someone's backstory. Hope this comment gets removed.
The dance it have to be censoured, the manga show clearly that she is dancing in a roof and at the end she jumps to her death. That was the sound, her falling into the ground
No it wasn't
@@bluetone-amv Read the manga
one of the best episodes ( in any medium, any show) i have ever seen! ... how good a scene/sequence can be! how cinematic!!
As soon as I saw it, I thought Ange would like when Okarun headbutted Silky it was paying homage to Baby Gohan headbutting Raditz.
Finally found my next piano piece! This is the first 2024 anime causing me to blame the rain while inside, and that melody is haunting but beautiful... much like the episode itself.
And this is why the material is so great. So fun great story and then hits u like a bus with the emotion and backstory. First of many.
Honestly I waited patiently for this once I watched this I knew Carlie was going to be devastated 😭
Also keep up the good work guys❤️
SHE JUST WANTED TO DANCE WITH HER DAUGHTER 😭
this episode really hit all the feels 😭
a mother will do everything to make her child happy ❤
The urge to watch this episode all day but I'm halting it til I get home from work cause I read the manga and it was brutal I didn't wanna cry from work but yey Carlie and Ange reaction 🎉
Imma need to rehydrate soon😅
Best episode yet
I keep telling everyone this was one of the best episodes of anime I've seen in a long time. The soundtrack alone was simply amazing.
THIS is how you make the audience actually feel bad and sorry for a villain. ABSOLUTE PERFECTION OF DIRECTION! just PEAK!!🙌🏻

Japan has a huge suicide rate and is kinda taboo to show scenes like that.
feel like aira's backstory also explains why she has such a big ego. its her shield since she needs to be strong because her mom is gone
It seems like her daughter died as well. Aira says "Take them to a more fortunate, kinder world" as a scene of them both plays. I was hoping we'd get to see her daughter grown up later but i found this out after searching it up. Man this episode is tragic.
It could mean for the yokai and her mom to I think
@@StudioTera20 I checked these scenes in the manga and its more clear. The child and mom were holding hands in the afterlife. Unfortunately its 100% talking about them.
Also the Yokai and mom are the same person so it cant be that.
In Japan stories and folklore often have children seeing spirits before aging out of it, so much so that many anime just assume you as a viewer already understand that.
Another fantastic video, Carlie and Ange! 🙌 The opening scenes are absolute perfection - the creativity and detail put into each one just keep getting better and better! Ange, your work on these intros sets the vibe so perfectly, and it’s clear how much thought goes into making each one unique and captivating. Thank you both for all the hard work and dedication - it really shines through! Can’t wait to see what you have in store next. 💖✨"
The director and the animators of this show really gave this episode justice. They really cooked
When Aira was a kid, she witnessed her mother die, so this along the fact of her being a little child, explains why she could see Acro Silky at that time, it is kind of implied in the manga as well as how Silky exactly died (the thump sound you mentioned), which is a very delicate subject in Japan.
the ost the dance the"i love you" man it just😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I didn’t even notice the matching red dress 😭😭
The composer is a master of emotional gut punches; it's the same person behind A Silent Voice's OST.
Anime only prolly didn't expect a series about ghost, aliens and balls to be this deep
Acrobatic Silky destroyed them, they're gonna need tissue supplies for future yokais 🌂☔
the "thud" is the sound of falling when the silky acrobat lady commits suicide when she jumps from the roof of the building at the end of her ballet dance and not the stars but the street lights... because the suicide scene is very sensitive. in some countries it is displayed in symbolic form
15:08 little kid often can see something like that actually, I believe some of them realize or not often have an imaginary friend cuz they can see, the scene showing information that she can see her the acro-silky lady there so she can see, no need to deny that information.
Tip for the future of Dandadan, put a tissue box on the table...
In laughter and in sadness, a lot more tears will come..
When you realize the true horror is not the Aliens or the Ghosts, but the inability of a Human to stand up for their loved ones
"yeah this is gonna suck" Ange you got it yet again
As a manga reader couldn’t be more happy with how this episode turned out cried first time watching it
dadandan has all
emotional, comedy, romance, highschool, action, good animation, alien stuff, ghost stuff, sci-fi etc.
Small children are said to be sensitive to supernatural stuff but lose this as they grow up
So little aira saw acro silky as a ghost
tissue box marked safe on this episode, we weren't
if not looking for balls, we're bawling in this anime, well played
seeing the thumbnail still makes me tear up a little bit
Im so sad when the kid cry and say thanks to her mom my heart is broke in thats adorable voice of child
I almost skipped this reaction because of how this episode affected me as a father of a young daughter. Almost... Now I'm crying again.
The love of a mother is such a powerful force
Damn, that prs is fine as hell! I subbed to this channel just because of you being a fellow guitarist. 😂
“Alien don’t got a sad backstory, right?”
I can only say that “ Do not underestimate the power and mind of Yukinobu Tatsu”
The cinematography was amazing and heartbreaking
There'll be more deep stories in the future. To me dandadan is such a masterpiece because of how well it mixes so many genres in one big incredible well written story, but the anime is making it even greater if how well directed, animated and produced it's been. I'm updated to the manga and knew what was going to happen, still I got so shocked with this episode... beyond perfection
Cant get that ost out of my head
6:42 “yeah, this is gonna suck” mans was thinking the exact same thing as me😂
It shows the mother take an extra bill out of the envelope to pay for the red dress, also implied earlier by the oversized shoes, and her inability to afford proper ones.
I can see how heartbreaking this scene is in the manga but with the power that can bring music, it's even worst T.T
I'll never forget this episode.
DAMNNNNNN. THE GUITAR INTRO MATE UFFF💥💥
