I was at that Nashville race. A lot of fans including myself were standing up next to one of those mobile movable metal barriers trying to flag down drivers for autographs or pictures or what not. Matt was my Dad's favorite driver of all time and he died when I was 13, so it was really on my bucket list to meet Matt. I flagged him down politely and asked for a picture as I left my Dad's Winston Champion diecast at the hotel because I wasn't sure if I'd be able to meet anybody. His PR/Media guy that was moving along with him tried to keep Matt moving and quickly told us that he'd be back through and that we'd get to see him again. I think they were on their way to the little driver's meeting they were doing inside Turn 1. Matt dead stopped, turned around, left the PR guy, and walked back to us and took a picture with me. That's the kind of person Matt Kenseth is and it meant more to me than anyone will ever know. Lifelong fan.

Matt always hated media so it sucks he will never really get the respect he deserves for how dominant of a driver he was. People don’t seem to look at Kenneth with names like Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson and harvick. And he was definitely up there beating those guys consistently. He is one of the smartest drivers ever. Always saved his cars and maximized points. Almost any given week for a ten year period we was in the top 3 contending for a win but would never risk a wreck for a win.

To me, he was and has been a better driver than he gives himself credit for. His story is amazing and obviously not the way it's done these days. Ass long as your dad is a CEO or at least some type of vice president of a company, you can drive. I'm a Jeff Gordon fan, but I never disliked it when Matt Kenseth won a race.

As a person who didn’t go out of his way to cheer on Kenseth, his win at Phoenix was really eye opening to me that him and the rest of sports stars globally from the mid 90’s to early 2000’s were retiring. Even just watching on TV, all I can think about was Jr, Gordon, Stewart, Manning, Bryant, Duncan, Ramirez, Jeter, Sosa, and then Kenseth. 3rd grade I started watching nascar and most other sports, I sat quiet for an hour in my freshman college dorm room after that win thankful for having the privilege to watch his last win on TV.

I always felt like JR's Xfinity team could do a Project 91 style setup. Run an extra car 10-12 events, with 4-5 different drivers. Sometimes himself, Kenseth for 1-2 races. Harvick in a couple next year. An Indy driver etc. Could even try to package the deals with some of Kenseth's better known sponsors and do throwback paint schemes.

Matt looked a bit uneasy when he was asked at the end if he was interested in driving a few races a year. Your reflexes fade, your eyesight blurs, and your body takes longer to heal. He wants to win, they all do, but he knows it may be best to hang up the helmet and enjoy his family more. They say smart drivers can walk away and never regret it...I don't think Matt regrets being there for his family and walking away from the track life...

It's a thing in age that comes in life where an hour is no longer an hour. Minutes to seconds change in your early ro mid 40s and by late 40s into 50s that clock speeds up when you think you got it under control. Huge props to guys out there in their mid late 40s onwards that can still do it.
I look at Big E racing injured to where he was at at 47 to 49 when we lost him and he could still do the things he was doing. Then seeing Mark Martin running like he did right to the end that's so impressive its not really losing that touch or your strength it's the clock working against you

The first time I was really aware of Matt Kenseth was in a Busch race at Dover in the late 90's, when he cut down a tire in turn 1 in the black #17 Sirius Satellite Radio-sponsored Chevy and took a header into the wall. The car slid across the track and into the infield with flames coming out from under the hood from a broken fuel pump. I remembered it so well because he hit directly in front of me, along with my then 70 year old mom and 12 year old daughter, for both of which it was their first NASCAR race! (That was the one where Dale Jr. did his "Spin 'n' Win", missing pit in under the green flag and having to take another lap before pitting, accelerating from a dead stop. The kid had the Busch Series well in hand in that era.)

He finished some races in the top 10 and even led in some of them(albeit during green flag pit stops). Plus, when he drove the 42 car for Chip Ganassi in 2020, he finished 10th in the Goodyear 400 at Darlington in the first race back since covid. He also finished 2nd in the Brickyard 400.

Definitely understand Matt’s comments. At my age I don’t do things on a daily basis as good as I did last year…at walking speed. Wide open speed must be even more difficult.

This is a really good discussion ... because who've never been in entertainment, whether it be sports, movies. music, other things ... they just don't realize that when you're young, like 18 - 26 you think, "yeah, I'll do this for a few years and then I'll retire and won't have to work again" - and that happens ... but there's also the "time out / age out" which is more common ... but either way, it's brutal ... because "you still can, you sill want to, you still have the 'desire'" but should you? ... and what do you do next? ... 36, retired? ... 60 years to live .... Brady couldn't give up being a QB because of the 'next' .... you prob couldn't either. It's harder than people imagine. That's why God created podcast. At least there's that (and I don't mean that in a bad way).

I honestley expected to hear Kaukauna as the favorite racetrack, Slinger is a blast to watch though since it's only a 1/4 mile oval. but I think he was track Champion a few times at Kaukauna. I did watch him at Madison and Slinger weekly, but I know Kaukauna and Rockford, Il where regular visits in the 90's

I think one of the big differences in dirt track and in asphalt (oval) is the family time. Most dirt track stuff is either local or not too far and if it is most of the big names have towterhomes to bring the kids. My dad and I both do our own stuff on my racecar so it's all tied into my family with my racing stuff. We have zero outside help it's just one big family helping. I think a lot of teams are like that in dirt. With asphalt stuff like nascar I feel like it's not as family oriented for the drivers

Dale Thank You for trying to get Matt involved. I was sick when he stopped driving. I didn't know the facts so thanks for clearing that up for me. I would go watch Matt race go carts if he would drive. Now that Josh has moved on I wish Matt would drive the 8 car a season or so and hone his skills then get back into a cup car

Love Matt. Hes truly a humble guy and reminds me so much of David Pearson. Just FYI I was racing late models ifrom the mid 80s to the early 90's and there were two guys up north that at 65 years old were still spanking us kid's a>ses, and I aint talking about 10 car fields. Art Clark at 65 was racing every week and winning track championships up there at Holland against 30 ... yep 30 CAR fields and some of the best funded teams in the the North East. Trickle, Senneker, Catalanno, Wylie, Knoll, Balough on occasion etc etc.. and the other one winning 15 years after Matts current age was Jr Hanley, a friend of mine and also the same guy who built my straight rail cars, (I used Howe perimerter cars). Jr's legend speaks for itself . Go listen to Mark Martin talk about Jr lol. Jr was winning SLM races well into his 70s but to Matt's point, both Art and Jr were racing usually two or three times a week but if not definitely every weekend.
