This is a tough one. I’ve been to 3 out of the main 4, O’ahu being the exception for now. I just got back from Maui, so it’s fresh in my mind, and Kauai and The Big Island are deeply ingrained in my memory and my heart. In my opinion, Maui has the best beaches, and the road to Hana is so worth waking up at 6 AM to get on the road. Great snorkeling, too. Kauai has the best hiking, Waimea Canyon being the top dog. It’s also more laid back than the others IMHO. I found it slightly more beautiful than the others, but only just. Big Island, Kona Specifically, has the best coffee on the planet. It’s almost worth traveling to Kona for the coffee alone. Again, just my humble opinion. It’s also got the most diverse geography, and there’s more to see than any other island. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter which one you go to; they’re all absolutely gorgeous, and whichever one you go with, you won’t regret it.
Lifelong resident!!! Born and raised. You have to visit Oahu Pearl Harbor, iolani palace and Honolulu first then move on. Visiting is nothing like living there.
As a frequent visitor to Hawaii who has visited all the major islands (and Lānaʻi), I’ve got to say your advice is spot on! And Maui is my favorite island too! I recently spent a month there with three weeks of vacation and a week of remote working, and I never ran out of things to see and do!
I think each island is beautiful and truly has aspects that caters to what you want to do. My personal opinion for Maui (aunt had her wedding there) is that it’s beautiful but the food isn’t as good and doesn’t have as much shopping as Oahu. For people who are foodies, looking for night life, shopping, more crowds or on a budget, Oahu is definitely the place to go but people who have the money, are more for scenery/excursions and relaxation or less crowds, Maui is the place to go. I’m someone who doesn’t mind the crowds so that’s why Oahu is my personal favorite since there’s a little bit of everything you want in a vacation! But I also have friends and coworkers who absolutely love Maui and only go to Maui specifically for their honeymoons and anniversaries because of how beautiful and relaxing it is. It’s all personal preferences honestly! I haven’t been to the big island or Kauai but in the future I plan to check it out. I will say this, I gained weight on my trip because I ate so much good food in Oahu. I did multiple excursions a day and somehow manage to gain more than lose so you know the food is definitely worth trying on the island. (Unpopular opinion from my family is that they probably wouldn’t visit Maui a second time because the money spent can be spent elsewhere like Asia where there’s so much to see and eat which is the top things for them in a vacation but because of my trip to Oahu last year, they have decided to give Oahu a chance this year.)
If staying in Waikiki (Oahu), no car is needed. A shuttle will take you from the airport and also to a luau or the Polynesian Cultural Center. However, on every other island 🏝, a rent a car 🚗 is required, unless maybe staying oceanfront on Maui's Kaanapali or Walea at a resort and not exploring.

If we had stayed 2 weeks we could have done it all. We also chose to rent a Jeep to help us see more of the island and it was cost effective compared to taking taxis everywhere & helped us bring whatever gear with us we wanted. Also, the ABC stores everywhere have so much that you may have forgotten at home. Make sure you check them out while you're there. Hope this helps! Sorry for the book haha.
These videos you have painstakingly created were a tremendous help in determining our recent Hawaiian vacation. Thank you so very much! I live in Alaska, so I’m spoiled with billion dollar views around every corner. Even the landfill/dump in Anchorage is gorgeous. 😂 But I must say, Hawaii has come the closest to Alaska in terms of breathtaking scenery. Every single wonderful thing you have ever heard about Hawaii …is 100% true. And the wondrous Hawaiian coffee…my word…there are no adequate words. I’m getting all choked up just thinking about Kona coffee. Look away… look away, I say! 😂 We stayed in Maui this past September & my jaw was on the floor for the duration of the trip. The condo was stylish-no canned artwork on the wall. It was so tasteful & well thought out. The smile never left my face. Love at first sight. I even felt like I could lick the bathroom floor at the airport in Maui with how clean they kept the facilities. I could see first hand how Hawaiians take great pride in their state as well as their attention to detail. Good. On. You!! 👏🏼 👏🏼 Alaskans & Hawaiians already have a common bond, so I plan to do my part to preserve that bond by spending as much time as humanly possible in the 49th & 50th states for the rest of my days. They are very, very special places-& imho, the finest on Earth. ♥️ 🍍 ❄️
Thank you so much fro the lovely comment and for sharing your trip. That is how I feel too. The smell of the islands is my favorite part. See you back here soon and thanks for watching! We do our best to capture the natural beauty.
We are in the process of planning our first trip to Hawaii this August, my partner and two teenagers. So excited for all the exploring and hiking and gorgeous scenery. I think this video has helped us determine Maui as the island we will visit for 6-7days, then maybe end up in Oahu for the last 3 days. Would you be comfortable sharing where you stayed? The accommodation is proving to be a tricky decision. Condo or hotel? We would love the extra space in a condo but the hotel will likely offer closer to beachfront and also pool… so many decisions!
If you like nightlife, lots of shopping and a little it cheaper accommodation cost, go to Oahu. If you like quiet, restful vacation with beautiful nature (not much nightlife) go to Kauai. If in between these two, I'd say come to Maui. Needless to say, I think Maui is the best island :)
Great video! My ex-husband and I were talking about how we were so sure we were gonna live such Great lives after our divorce, but the reality of our incomes and having to purchase 2 of everything, we're both like single parents because we both carry the expense equally. Then, I said ugh their birthdays! I hate spending all that money knowing they're gonna have a 2nd party at his house! I spend all that money feeding everyone just to fill up my house with toys they're gonna break in a week 🙃. My ex said he was feeling the same way and idk how we ended up deciding that the hardest part is having to explain to the 7yo why he can't have us both for 1 party. Somehow we start talking about money better spent on family trips. Together we have 2 kids, they are 3 years apart but have the exact same birth date. I think we're gonna do it, my 7yo wants to go to Hawaii and now thanks to this video, I do too. Idk why I over shared 😅 In your video I can see us all splitting up and enjoying ourselves by ourselves and together at times just intertwining our lives. Thanks for such a great video
I visited Oahu in 2021, I had a blast. But I’m going to Maui in less then two weeks and I’m super excited about that. I think Maui is going to be my favorite
Thank you. I’m planning my first solo trip and I want Hawaii to be the first I visit. Watching everything I can to learn and plan my itinerary on Hawaii😊
Kauai is my favourite!! :) they're all beautiful but Kaua'i's beauty is UNREAL. Can't wait to go back once Canada doesn't require us to quarantine for 14 days upon return :) thank you for these videos!!
I agree. Kaua'i is going to be the first on our list for island-hopping. We lost all of our footage (hard drive crash) from our July trip there so we need a repeat.
It's closed on lockdown even though nobody is in the hospital for covid. They have a total of 150 positive cases since March. It's not open for anyone.
My wife and I purchased the guides for the Big Island and Oahu. What a SUPER guide. We rented a car on the big Island and traveled to every spot they recommended. Never a s disappointment! Tuk Tuk Ti Truck was great. We showed them your recommendation of them and they were thrilled! Black Sand Beach,Volcano National Park, Richardson Beach,Kayaking at Capt Cooks/snorkeling.Total Blast and more! On Oahu the very same …….. thank you thank you worth every Dime for the guide! Dogs surfing at Waikiki Beach, snorkel trips to see turtles, great restaurants. Also Great Island People too! Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head hike, costal drives too. Royalty Mansion etc etc! Thanks Guys!,,
Thanks so much for purchasing our itineraries for Oahu and Hawai'i! We are glad they worked out for you! Thanks for sharing with the guys at Tuck Tuck Thai Food truck. You had an epic trip!
I spend my life in Hawaii for 2 weeks every 3 months coming from San Francisco, so I've been to all the Hawaiian Islands many times over and over again. Maui used to be my favorite many years ago but the island is rapidly turned "California" day by day. I'm thinking of selling my house in Paia and buying a house in O'ahu because I finally starting to get tired of Maui, Kauai and The Big Island. But I never get bored in O'ahu, Chee Hoo! I will still visit the little beach and Paia secret beach "middle" from time to time, but Honolulu is where I can eat the best poke, get the best food, and the best surf (from Waikiki, Diamond Head, Queens, Sunset, Pipeline, Velzyland) never ending fun!
Based on this video I think I like Kauai the best. The canyons.. the population.. DEFINITELY perfect for teens. I’d love to live there eventually and raise a family there.. I want my kids to have the most adventurous lifestyle and I want them to get to know everybody on the island. My mom is from the Caribbean in Cuba.. so I guess you can say I naturally have that Island/tropical vibe! I love exploring so it’ll be awesome living like there’s no tomorrow.
I'll be staying on Oahu in September for 2 weeks. 10 days at Disney's Aulani resort and Spa followed by 4 more days at the Aston Waikiki beach hotel. This is my first time ever that I'll be visiting Hawaii. Cant wait
I loved the Big Island. So much to do! Black, white and green sand beaches, lava tubes and active volcanoes, Lots to see and way less tourists then Oahu. We went to the top of Mauna Kea to watch the sunset and that was phenomenal, although I realized later that the locals were protesting all the goings on up there, which I understand. We drove around the entire island and it was the best trip.
I'm about to visit Hawaii for the 4th time woth friends, (twice to the big Island and twice to Maui). I have to say thay imo the big island is best for coffee (our first visit was prompted by a good friend who was working on one of those farms) and for adventure if you have friends or family who can show you around. It's much more "residential" and some of the night life areas can get rough if you don't have an in. Maui is gorgeous, and our favorite so far, but is crowded and SO EXPENSIVE. We are from a spendy, big city and we were still blown away by the price of goods.
My daughter and I have visited all the islands eight times over the course of 20 years. We decided to reside in Maui since 2017. We have two places, upcountry North East of Maui ( with 50 animals) and Kihei, South of Maui ( Kamaole Beach park III) for beaches and kayaking. We got the best of both worlds. The climate in Hawaii is superb! We were from Carmel by the sea in Ca. Beautiful place as well, however it’s very cold.
We just got back from Carmel by the Sea, which we absolutely loved. How funny that I was imagining our next trip and yours was the first comment I saw. We met a nice woman on the beach in Carmel-by-the-Sea and she told us we have to go to Hawaii. She loves the big island.
I've never been to Hawaii before but planning to go soon with my family, it would be a dream come true to visit. According to many, Maui just seems to be the best island overall, and honestly I wouldn't disagree doing my research and gathering all pros and cons. With that being said, honestly at a personal level I just feel that Oahu is the island I would love to be our first. Its kind of a "calling", lol. I'm truly a city person and Oahu having that perfect mixture of urban and rural areas seems like so cool to me. We love going to restaurants and shopping malls, also the historic part of pearl harbor would be nice. The various trails and many beaches around Oahu just seems like my place to go honestly. Overall I agree that Maui is better than Oahu. But in my case and our lifestyle and preferences, I just see Oahu as the perfect island for us to visit for our first time. Maui would be without any doubt our main visit once we get to go to Hawaii for our second trip. Oahu just seems to have that perfect tone of paradise without compromising the great civilization factor. You can still experience the Hawaiian culture and people. Only downside is the crowds and the huge traffic, but in my opinion is worth the hassle knowing also that we will have the time to relax and enjoy the visit even if it means wasting some idle time on the roads. Besides I love to drive and would love to rent a nice Jeep and just visit many places the island has to offer. If there's traffic so be it. By the way I've done some research and still in Oahu you can find some beautiful beaches and trails that are mostly visited by locals which means that they are less crowded and those are the places that we plan to visit as well. I would love to visit Maui later on a second trip, but for now at least in our case, I think Oahu is our island to pop our Hawaiian cherry...lol.
Most people go to Oahu for their first trip for all the reasons you listed. We lived on Oahu for 2-years and we loved it. As you say, it has everything from the town to the country. Waikiki feels like Vegas which makes it fun for a couple days (for our personalities) but then we need to escape to the country or do activities outside of Honolulu. Enjoy Oahu for your first trip, you won't regret it! Check out our itineraries for some ideas on what to do and our hiking article (Oahu trails are at the bottom: thehawaiivacationguide.com/best-hawaiian-island-for-hiking/ Mahalo, Jordan
My favorite is Kau'ai. We had a timeshare there for years and years! Maui is my second favorite, followed by the big Island and Oahu is definitely my least favorite, but you have to see Pearl Harbor at least once in your life.
Maui was such a dull commercialized experience. You either have hotels and golf courses stacked on top of each other or you go on a 4 hour road trip to the rainforest and mountains. Nothing in-between
Having been to them all I completely agree with your assessment of each island but for ranking IMO 1) Maui, 2) Kauai (quiet) 3) Hawaii 4) Oahu (too busy).
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Okay here's a maybe-stupid question: we can only afford one island. Do the main ones you mentioned all have helicopter tours? Because we have one disabled family member and that's her easiest way to "tour" Edit: Took the cool quiz and we all got The Big Island. So we're checking out the info, thanks, cool website!
Appreciated this very much! you gave such great context for what I needed to understand. Think I'll hit Maui first then hop around as I learn more, assuming I can pull myself away. Thanks!
Debating on where I should go for my birthday trip this year and as a first timer who is trying to narrow things down and plan. This video is incredibly helpful on so many levels. Definitely debating between Maui and Oahu.
So happy I stumbled upon you channel. We were supposed to go to Hawaii May 2020, fly into Honolulu and fly out of Maui but, of course, it got cancelled. Can't wait to watch you other vlogs. Stay safe :)
After visiting the islands. I knew instantly that I wanted to live on Moloka’i or Kauai. This time next week we will relocate to Kauai and I’m super stoked.
Lived there for 4 year, went to UH Hilo, and had a chance to visit all the islands. Visit Oahu during the school break was some of the best time in my life. Left in 2015, really miss Big Island 😔😔
The advice I got when I moved to Hawaii for work was to visit all the islands. I did multiple times and loved it. At least you know where to vacation now!
Beware: Hawaii is a scammers paradise. People go to the islands thinking they're going to live on the beach and just eat fruit, have no plan and no resources, they're forced to work without skills and just lie about it and then they ask for money up front and disappear. Often when the surf is up the guys don't show up. When the fissure on the big island is flowing The air stinks and it's hard to breathe. Healthcare is non-existent. Do not get sick or hurt while there. The only real place to get real healthcare is on Oahu. I sold my property on the big island in Kona in February and I'm glad to be rid of it. Visiting is just so much easier and cheaper now.
@@LambertBrady Thank you for telling me all this important information, about the Island of Hawai’i I am currently going to college right now to get a education, because I heard a lot about this. Also, I have plans I am saving up. Yes, I am moving to Oahu after I get the college education and maybe go to medical school to become a doctor, they don’t really have doctors on the island. I heard they pay a lot with doctors on the island.
@@LambertBrady brady I've been on big island, Hilo 20years, there scammers all over, everywhere not just Hawaii, I've been ripped off many many times, good times too, i got into kupuna softball, golf, too old now, Your right about most, i just cant think of another place i would want to live. i don't like Kona either, rains to much here, then i think of the traffic on the mainland, Aloha

I don't like crowded places so I was looking more towards the big island or Maui but you guys gave great points on Oahu where most of my cousins want to go so I might be more open to it now! this was great, thank you!
This was a great video, but I wish you had addressed which island is best for seniors. Would love any thoughts you might be willing to share for a senior who has no use for cities! Thanks for your great work.
We like to think seniors can go anywhere! If you don’t like cities, avoid Honolulu. But the big city and population center of Oahu has the most services for accessibility. thehawaiivacationguide.com/hawaii-handicap-accessible/

Awesome summary, guys! My wife and I are looking at Hawai'i for our first post-pandemic trip, and neither of us have been there before. Your video really helped!
I would start with Oahu because Honolulu is the gateway to everything else Hawaii. And by all means,, do stay in Waikiki,, it's a nice touristy area. Then Maui, then Big Island, then Kauai. You can also do a 7 day cruise to all the Islands from Honolulu.
I like how I can fly into Oahu, but I really don't want a "touristy area" so that's the problem. . . Especially with the new wave of Covid hitting the islands. I'd love somewhere less popular. . .

May I ask which place you ended up staying at? Just looking for recommendations. Thanks!
Thanks for the tips! Maui fills that middle spot for the Hawaiian Islands but it is hard for us not to be biased.
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide That is true :)
Why can't they have both at one birthday? That's silly, focus isn't on the parents/adukts for that day. Best of luck to you guys
Just been to maui to see my girl. Its amazing! The nature is breathtaking and the people there are very nice. Im moving there around February.
I visited Oahu in 2021, I had a blast. But I’m going to Maui in less then two weeks and I’m super excited about that. I think Maui is going to be my favorite
Enjoy Maui! And whale season!
Thank you. I’m planning my first solo trip and I want Hawaii to be the first I visit. Watching everything I can to learn and plan my itinerary on Hawaii😊
Enjoy the solo trip to Hawaii! It is a good place to visit for solo travelers.
I agree, Kauai is my favourite! We also live in Canada and would love to visit soon. This is the only island I could see is moving to.
@@lisaeveleigh658 yes Kauai would be lovely! If only it was easy for us to move there :( haha

Dogs surfing
at Waikiki Beach, snorkel trips to see turtles, great restaurants.
You can donate your house in Paia to us to avoid capital gain taxes. We would be happy to do that for you.
Lol, How very kind of you.
I will think about it after I’m done shopping grocery at Mana Foods :)
I've only been to Kauai once and I must say I'm in love with the island
It's so beautiful! It's hard to not fall in love with it.

this was the perfect video to help me chose, thanks for being so concise!
On May 2022 will be my first time on Oahu n Maui.. thank you for all the advices you have in your channel. Gracias ☺️
Love living in nature.
Cant wait
my family just got back from Oahu. It's very nice! Lots of places to explore!
@@fa2spectrum534 I can’t wait I’m going on early June!!
How did it go??
I loved the Big Island. So much to do! Black, white and green sand beaches, lava tubes and active volcanoes, Lots to see and way less tourists then Oahu. We went to the top of Mauna Kea to watch the sunset and that was phenomenal, although I realized later that the locals were protesting all the goings on up there, which I understand. We drove around the entire island and it was the best trip.
Any recommendations for where to stay or rent a car?
@@robypaul202 We stayed in a vrbo about a mile from downtown Kona and rented a car at the airport.
Good looking couple! First time watchers super happy with their choice! Thanks for giving us such direction for our honeymoon! Good work.
Good video, thanks... think I'm going to try the Big Island, because there's things to do and you can still get your peace and quiet.
Those are great take always. Thanks for sharing!
I actually prefer Kauai! There are several celebrities that live there. It’s a lot more relaxing, and the people are much friendlier.
Thanks for sharing!
I agree! As a longtime resident of Kauai I suggest you first time visitors to Hawaii should go to Maui!! Lol
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Hi! Would you recommend Oahu as first time visit for family with 16, 17, 23 yr sons?
My favorite is Kau'ai. We had a timeshare there for years and years! Maui is my second favorite, followed by the big Island and Oahu is definitely my least favorite, but you have to see Pearl Harbor at least once in your life.

Hola América and family, thank you for this amazing channel. I am excited to visit Big island 🌴
Aloha yea it’s rlly fun!

Maui is the best as its not as over crowded as Oahu, nor as sleepy as Kuai.. No confused roosters crowing at all hours of the night too! ; )
Haha
I have to agree it's just the most relaxing
Im with you. Maui is also my favorite
This didn't age well
Maui was such a dull commercialized experience.
I’m so excited for my first trip to Hawaii (Maui) in December! I watch your videos and get even more excited lol
Have a wonderful trip! Nothing better than the first visit.
How was it ?? Any suggestions?
Yes, how was it? :-)
@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Okay here's a maybe-stupid question: we can only afford one island. Do the main ones you mentioned all have helicopter tours? Because we have one disabled family member and that's her easiest way to "tour"

Great informative video! When my wife and I went, we did 3 nites on Oahu and a week on Maui. Great time!
How do u get to travel?

1st Kauai, 2nd Big Island, 3rd Maui, 4th Oahu 🤙🏻
I dig that plan
Lived there for 4 year, went to UH Hilo, and had a chance to visit all the islands. Visit Oahu during the school break was some of the best time in my life. Left in 2015, really miss Big Island 😔😔
The advice I got when I moved to Hawaii for work was to visit all the islands. I did multiple times and loved it. At least you know where to vacation now!
Maui get's first place with Molokai second place. Unless you like expensive restaurants and crowded bars, then Oahu is your go-to.
Great information! Thanks!
I am moving to Hawaii, These tips make me feel better about Hawaii.
$$$$

I'd love somewhere less popular. . .
